The Global Methodist Church (GMC) is a relatively new denomination, officially launched on May 1, 2022, stemming from a long-simmering theological divide within the United Methodist Church (UMC). For decades, the UMC had struggled with increasingly polarized views on issues of sexuality and biblical interpretation, particularly regarding same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ+ clergy. Conservative Methodists, feeling that the UMC was increasingly straying from traditional doctrine, began exploring options for forming a new, theologically conservative denomination. This movement culminated in the creation of the GMC, offering a haven for congregations and individuals who sought to uphold what they considered to be orthodox Methodist beliefs. The GMC’s rapid growth since its inception demonstrates the significant desire within Methodism for a church rooted in traditional Wesleyan theology and practice.
