So Why Is It “I Wish I Were”? and not “I Wish I Was?”

This is a good question. When we say “I wish I were”, we are using something called the “subjunctive mood.”

The subjunctive is used when you refer to potential or hypothetical situations. For example when you wish for something that doesn’t exist yet. For example “I wish I were” is grammatically correct because you’re wishing for something that hasn’t occurred yet. Do you remember the Tevye’s song from Fiddler on the Roof, “If I Were a Rich Man?” When you start the sentence with “if” indicates the potential nature of the situation. It is a situation that doesn’t actually exist yet, and the subjunctive should be used. When it it becomes real, you can switch back to “was.”

Tour Natchitoches with Barbara will offer Steel Magnolias Tours during the Blush and Bashful weekend. The Tour includes Filming Sites as well as the actual Harling Family House and the Beauty Shop House that inspired the Setting for the Play and Movie.  Cost is $20 per person. Enough of golf, tennis and Tiddlywinks! I say this even though I played “left Twiddly” on my high school team. Tiddlywinks is played on a felt mat using small discs called “winks”. You use a “squidger” (also a disc) made of plastic, to shoot a wink by flicking the squidger across the top of a wink and then over its edge and thus propel it into the air into a pot. But wait! It gets even more exciting. You could play defense by sending your own winks into the pot and thus potting their winks by “squopping” them by landing on the opponent’s winks. It is not a game for the faint hearted and required physical skill. Now I am ready for some football. The pigskins will soon be flying and it can’t come soon enough for me. Chef Menteur  “Lying Leader” “Chef Menteur” means “Lying Leader” or “Chief Liar”. To whom did this refer? What was the lie that made him infamous? One story says he was a Choctaw chief who deceived his own tribe. He was exiled with a few family members and friends and lived on a strip of land near the end of the serpentine bayou. The Chef Menteur Highway was the first automobile road that approached the swampy eastern edge of Orleans Parish. It is known to some as Highway 90. Most people simply refer to it as “Chef Highway”. Another idea is that a French leader broke a promise to a native tribe in the area, which made him the “Chief Lair” or “Lying Leader”. There is still another theory and this is the one I like. The Bayou was so winding and doubled back on itself like switchbacks on a mountain road, the native Americans felt deceived as to what would be their ultimate destination in following the stream. “Anterograde amnesia is a loss of the ability to create new memories after the event that caused amnesia, leading to a partial or complete inability to recall the recent past, while long-term memories from before the event remain intact.” (Source: Mayo Clinic and others) What would in mean to suffer the loss of the ability to create new memories? I find it almost inconceivable. As precious as our memories of the past can be, what a precious gift it is to make new memories with our family and friends. That 3 pound brain (some of us may have less than that) with its amazing pre-frontal cortex is the center of giftedness. This is the region of the brain that creates the orchestration of thoughts and actions in accordance with internal goals. I am not a doctor nor do I play a doctor on tv, but it would seems to me that it is this region of the brain that would lead you to ask: “Where’s my brain? Why have I not taken my family to Natchitoches to hear the stories, meet the people, savor the food and create new memories? “What was I thinking when our group settled on a ‘ho-hum’ outing when we could have created fantastic new memories by taking the tour of the filming sites of Steel Magnolias”? We could have popped corn and watched the movie again before going to Natchitoches.” I will come to my senses and contact Barbara today to plan for making new memories.
