DC Comics Shazam Variant Covers 23 Feb 2020, 6:24 pm

Here are 2 variant covers for the recent Shazam comics series, for issues #4 and #8, I think.  Whenever I draw Captain Marvel, I always try to give it a little hint of C.C. Beck flavour - he was one of my favourite cartoonists.

DC Comics The Terrifics Issue 25 variant cover 23 Feb 2020, 6:17 pm

Another nice change of pace, I tried to draw this one in a different style as I had been playing around more and experimenting with digital tools.  About 90% of this cover was drawn in Procreate on my Ipad Pro with the Apple Pencil.

Marvel Comics Spider-man Life Story Issue 2 variant cover 23 Feb 2020, 6:14 pm

An interesting assignment - I was asked to draw a variant cover for Spider-man: Life Story, for issue 2.  Since the issue was set in the 1970's, I was tasked with trying to give the cover a "70's feel".  Hence, I went all out in that direction.

DC Comics Shazam: The World's Mightiest Mortal HC Cover 23 Feb 2020, 6:11 pm

This was for a hard cover collection of stories from the Shazam comics revival from DC in the 1970's.  I was enthusiastic about drawing this, as Captain Marvel and those comics were some of the first comics I read as a kid.

Marvel Comics Presents, Issue 2 variant Cover 23 Feb 2020, 6:06 pm

Another fun one, featuring the FF (in a way).  This was a variant cover for the anthology series, Marvel Comics Presents.  It featured 2 stories; one starring Dr. Doom and Reed Richards, and another starring Gorilla Man.  I drew it to look evoke an old 50's double-feature movie poster.

Marvels Annotated Issue 2 Variant Cover 23 Feb 2020, 6:03 pm

Had the chance to check off a bucket-list item: drawing the Fantastic Four for Marvel.  This was a variant cover for the 25th anniversary edition of Marvels, issue #2.

Captain America 701 - 704 Covers 26 Apr 2019, 5:43 am

A fun assignment from a year ago, Marvel asked me to draw the main covers for 4 issues of Captain America.  The stories were set in the far future, featuring the descendants of Steve Rogers.  I got to try some interesting palette ideas and design some futuristic storm troopers along the way.

Detective Comics Issue 1000 Variant Cover 26 Apr 2019, 5:35 am

I was asked to draw a variant cover for the 1000th anniversary issue of Detective Comics.  Similar to the Action Comics issue 1000 cover, DC asked artists to draw covers based on various decades.  I was assigned the 1950's, which gave me the opportunity to draw all the various zany iterations of Batman that permeated that era.  This cover took a lot of research, but was a lot of fun.

My wife, Claudia Davila, helped me with the typography, and we laid out all the cover elements including the logos and text boxes ourselves.  You can see a version of the art without those elements below.

The New Yorker: ROMA film review 3 Feb 2019, 7:12 am

An illustration for the New Yorker, to accompany a review of Alfonso Cuaron's new film, Roma.  AD: Chris Curry.

Action Comics 1000 Variant Cover 2 Nov 2018, 10:30 pm

I was given the assignment to draw a cover for Action Comics' 1000th issue.  8 artists were chosen, and each was given an era of Action Comics to depict.  I got lucky and was given the 1940's - easy money, really, as it was an opportunity to draw Superman vs. the Nazis in WW2.  I even threw in a "buy bonds" blurb - something I'd wanted to draw on a cover for years.

Below, you can see the initial thumbnails for the cover as I worked out a couple of ideas.  The concept really came together very quickly.

More Batwoman Variant Covers 1 Nov 2018, 9:01 pm

These were my final 4 Batwoman variant covers, and I was sad to see the series end.  I didn't know much about Batwoman before I started the year long run of covers, but I grew to really appreciate the character and her fans.

A portrait of Doug Morris, a storied music mogul.  Drawn for Columbia University Magazine.

Occidental College Magazine Cover 12 Feb 2018, 2:24 am

A cover illustration for Occidental College's magazine, this one was on the theme of female alumni who had been pioneers in space-flight technologies.  The artwork was drawn digitally.

DC Comics Batwoman Issue 4 Variant Cover 22 Nov 2017, 7:07 am

I've been doing a run of variant covers for DC Comics Batwoman comic.  This was the first, for issue 4.

the New Yorker: Portrait of Taylor Swift 15 Nov 2017, 9:54 pm

Blonde, attractive celebrities are hard to draw a likeness of since they tend to be a bit generic.  One missed line and you've gone from drawing Charlize Theron to Margot Robbie.   Luckily, Taylor Swift has a few more signature characteristics - like her bright red lipstick.

the New Yorker: Portrait of Rex Tillerson 8 Nov 2017, 8:45 am

A fun assignment, drawn digitally.  This illustration accompanied an article on current US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in the New Yorker.  You can read the article here
