Annual Turkey Shoot Raises $2,000 For Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center Food Pantry 19 Nov 2024, 4:37 pm

*Another $1,000 in food and in-kind donations also added to the total*

Over 80 golfers helped raise $2,000 in cash and collect hundreds of dollars in food donations for the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center on Saturday, November 16, 2024, during the 19th Annual Turkey Shoot-Out and Food Pantry Drive at Blue Rock Golf Course in South Yarmouth.

Proceeds from the annual fundraiser this year once again went to the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center’s Food Pantry. Each week, the pantry in Hyannis serves hundreds of veterans and their families suffering from food insecurity. Cape Cod has one of the largest veteran populations in Massachusetts.

The cash donation in combination with food donated from golfers and team members at The Davenport Companies brought the total value to just over $3,000, all of which will be used to help those in need this holiday season.

“The nation owes a huge debt to the men and women who have worn the uniform for our country and it’s an honor for all of us at Blue Rock Golf Course to help raise money and collect food for our deserving Cape Cod veterans,” said PGA Pro Sue Calabro.

In a true act of generosity, several winners donated the turkeys they won back to the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center.

“As the holidays approach, it’s heart-warming to see the generosity of our golfers as they helped the cause while having some fun on the course,” said Calabro.

The winning team included George Fairbanks, Robin Hayes, Flora Gaudete, and Bob Zavorskas.

Blue Rock Golf Course Repeats “Best Of” Ranking and Wins New Rave Review 30 Sep 2024, 8:13 pm

Blue Rock Golf Course on Cape Cod continues to receive the highest possible accolades – from the media and the golfing public.

For the sixth year in a row, the readers of the Cape Cod Times have voted Blue Rock Golf Course as the Best Golf Course on Cape Cod, a recognition by the public that Blue Rock stands above all other courses in the area.

Cape Cod Times Best Of award logo
Winning that award six years in a row doesn’t happen by accident – it’s the result of the best playing conditions possible on the course and the highest level of customer service from our PGA Pro and Pro Shop team.

Separately, Golfing Magazine writer Myles Murray recently called us a “Mid-Cape Treasure.”

Here’s what he wrote about Blue Rock:

“Blue Rock offers everything a golfer would want for a trip to the Cape: an all-grass driving range with multiple targets, two putting greens, a chipping green, and a quaint pro shop stocked with gear, equipment, drinks, and snacks.”
Murray went on to say:

“The course is designed for quality, pace of play, and challenge. I think golfers of all handicaps will have a great, quick round at Blue Rock and want to go back for more.”

And earlier in the year, the readers of Cape Cod Life voted Blue Rock Golf Course the Best Mid-Cape Golf Course.

We’re honored by these accolades and are thankful for all those who continue to recognize Blue Rock Golf Course as the Best on Cape Cod!

See you soon at Blue Rock!

Blue Rock Golf Course/Cape & Islands Veterans’ Outreach Center Partner For Annual Turkey Shoot 6 Nov 2023, 4:05 pm

As the holiday season approaches, Blue Rock Golf Course in South Yarmouth, MA and the Cape & Islands Veterans’ Outreach Center will partner for the 18th Annual Turkey Shoot-Out and Food Pantry Drive on Saturday, November 18.

Proceeds from the annual fundraiser this year will go to the Cape & Islands Veterans’ Outreach Center’s Food Pantry and their efforts to provide critically needed food for veterans and their families across Cape Cod.

During the event, as many as 150 golfers will play the course, with a portion of their entry fees donated to the Cape & Islands Veterans’ Outreach Center. And many of the golfers who play in the event will win turkeys through closest-to-the-pin contests. Several winners often donate their turkey back to the cause.

Non-golfers are also encouraged to take part in the fun. The public is invited to drop off canned goods, non-perishable food items and grocery store gift cards to the Pro Shop at 48 Todd Rd. in South Yarmouth from now through November 18.

“So many of the men and woman who valiantly served our nation now find themselves battling food insecurity. As inflation continues to send food prices soaring, the need is greater than ever, especially at this time of year,” said PGA Head Professional Jim Campbell.

Three Previous Champions Dominate Again In Annual Blue Rock Golf Course Club Championship 18 Aug 2023, 3:38 pm

Three previous champions dominated play and retained their titles in the 2023 Blue Rock Golf Course Club Championship, held on August 12 and 13 in South Yarmouth.
In the Women’s Open Division, Roberta Oberlander held off all challengers to defend her 2022 title, winning with a two-day score of 135. Oberlander showed off her skills once again to capture the 2023 championship amid a tough field of competitors.
With equal dominance, Steve Clayton powered his way to a third-straight Blue Rock Club Championship win in the Men’s Open Division, scoring a two-day total of 111, his best yet. Clayton’s three-peat cemented him as one of Blue Rock’s top players.
Capturing the Women’s Senior Division Championship was course regular Barbara Vinall with a two-day score of 172. In the Men’s Senior Division, first-year Blue Rock member Eddie Saunders carded an impressive two-day total of 123 for the win.
In the Junior Division, Ronan Finnegan showed what a force of golf this young player is becoming, winning his third-straight Club Championship with a one-day total of 61.
“With some of the toughest competition we’ve seen, this year’s Blue Rock Golf Course Club Championship brought out the best game in our members as they fought for bragging rights to be the best-of-the-best,” said Blue Rock PGA Pro Jim Campbell.
“Roberta, Steve, and Ronan all put on a show as they retained the title in their respective divisions. They will clearly be the ones to beat again next year,” said Campbell.

This Cape Cod golf course is one of the best Par-3 courses in the country 10 Jun 2023, 3:57 pm

(Originally published in the Cape Cod Times on June 10, 2023)

Blue Rock Golf Course, an 18-hole par-3 course is nestled in amongst the trees in Yarmouth, has been named the among the top 10 executive courses in the country, according to editors at Golfspan.com.

“With its meticulously maintained greens and challenging holes, Blue Rock Golf Course is a great choice for golfers seeking to improve their short game,” were the words of the website’s editors who created the list.

The list features courses from all over the country, from Hawaii to Florida, but this Cape Cod course is the only representative from New England, and checks in at No. 5 on the list. According to the website, the course measures at 3,000 yards, and features holes ranging in length from 103-255 yards.

Rarely do acknowledgements like this come as a surprise, but for a golf course that was built in 1962, this was a surprise.

“We received an alert that Blue Rock had been mentioned in a national article, so we clicked on it and lo and behold there it was,” Matt Pitta, director of communications at the Davenport Companies, which owns Blue Rock, said. “This was something we didn’t solicit.”

Pitta says that the independence of the ranking may be the most rewarding part of it all. The Davenport Companies has owned the course since its inception and believe it offers unique opportunities which sets it apart.

The course was originally designed by celebrated golf course architect, Geoffrey Cornish. According to Pitta, part of what has helped the course generate such prestige, is the fact that it can appeal to golfers who are new to the sport, while also challenging seasoned players.

“They built a course that has lots of challenging hills, water, sand traps, and it’s really not at all what you’d consider a typical Par-3 executive course, because of all those extra features,”

The course has limitations given the residential neighborhood it calls home, but Cornish found away to create a course that Pitta believes appeals to both amateurs and regular players.

“We tell people, ‘You’re going to use every club in your bag when you play Blue Rock.” Pitta said.

Pitta said both himself and the company were filled with a tremendous amount of pride after becoming aware of the recognition. He believes it’s only achieved through everyone involved with the course.

“I think that the recognition and the pride is with the entire team,” he said. “There’s no way you would ever get a ranking like this, a national level ranking, without a 100% team effort.”

Pitta highlighted both Superintendent Wes Jones, PGA Pro Jim Campbell, the grounds crew which are collectively responsible for the upkeep of the course, as the true reasons for the Course getting the ranking.

Par 3 Courses Not Short on Fun: Cape Cod’s Blue Rock a Delight 19 May 2023, 5:09 pm

(Originally published in The Boston Herald on Thursday, May 18, 2023)

I used to think only wanna-be golfers would savor a Par 3 course. Then I entered the world
of real golfers and found – first at a fabulous Par 3 in Scottsdale, Arizona, called Mountain
Shadows (mountainshadows.com) – that my fellow golfers – all quality players willing to let
a learner like me come along – were excited for that part of our adventure.

On the Par 3, they told me, they could focus on the shorter game (really, where the rubber
meets the road, when it comes down to it), get more holes into their day in less time and,
best of all, concoct all kinds of little “mini competitions” for the round (most birdies,
anyone?). In short, the shorter round was – and they were right- not at all short on fun.

On Cape Cod there’s a course that takes the Par 3 experience – both literally and
figuratively- to a new level. The Blue Rock Golf Course (https://bluerockgolfcourse.com)
tucked into a (For the Cape) hilly 55 acres in South Yarmouth, is a lush and lovely, classic
and challenging, finesse fueled fun 18 holes of Par 3 awesomeness.

Worth the drive over the bridge? You know it.

I arrived at Blue Rock late morning on a vivid blue May day and was charmed immediately
upon arrival. Walking through the grapevine-heavy trellis toward the clubhouse set the
mood: This is a course not just with history, but with a history of ownership that tends
toward perfection.

Which is true. Blue Rock has been owned and operated by the same family – The
Davenport Companies – since they hired world-renowned course architect Geoffrey
Cornish (also known for Summerlea Golf & Country Club, Montreal, Quebec and others, as
well as closer to Boston’s Poquoy Brook Golf Club in Lakeville) to create a Par 3 with views,
challenges and variety.

The family maintains a close eye on the course and are, I’m told, sticklers for condition
perfection. This spring day-when it’s kind of the norm (I’m learning) for things like
aeration and other early season east coast maintenance to make things less than perfect, I
find perfection. Even the greens are rolling just right.

That’s not by chance. They’re so precise on course quality that they send team members out
to walk the course with string trimmers to remove sprigs of grass growing up tree trunks.
That’s some detail right there.

That palate of precision overlays a fun course. You’ll hit over water – and that’s a big hit
over water, no less than three times. The course centers around a pond (which has never
been dredged; imagine the ball totals down there). Its varied elevation puts you up high to
hit way over the sparkling water as it reflects a Cape-worthy white bridge.

It’s a delight every time you hit that kidney-shaped green (or at least get by without a
splash). You’ll hit over that water on 9, 10 and-you can almost hear Cornish giggling at
this design decision: on the 18th.

You’ll pull out your driver, too: Hole 5 measured 250 yards to the pin our day out, a real
chance to air out the big clubs during the round.

The 55 acres feels compact, and yet the design works so that you never feel like you’re on
top of another group of golfers. Well placed trees and other flora make natural buffers, and
the variations in elevation set up like little overlooks to check out other players without
breathing down their necks.

Blue Rock is wildly popular. In summer months, you’ll want to book your round ahead of
time.

Late afternoon midweek is a great choice: you’ll find it less crowded, cooler with the usual
afternoon sea breeze and if you time it right, you’ll catch a lovely sunset as you round the
final three holes.

I didn’t expect to fall in love with a Par 3, but here I am, planning times to get back to Blue
Rock Golf Course. It’s an easy zip down the Mid Cape highway, and close to great spots for
dinner like Captain Parker’s Pub. You can grab a post-round beer on site too: And don’t tell
Blue Rock but a $4 beer course-side is nearly unheard of. Bonus!
