Design Competition 20 Apr 2013, 12:59 am

Building Area 170,000 SF
Location Washington DC
The design parti features the subtle interplay of folding glass planes that create hierarchy in the building enclosure to signify the mid-block entrance to the building and create a corner feature.

The mid-block entrance to the building along 17th Street occurs where two glass planes are angled inward in plan and appear to extend behind the lower stone façade element. At the upper floors the angled glass planes continue above the stone façade to create an open slot inflection.

Folding glass planes extend above the roof level as an architectural feature to ‘soften’ the transition of the facades towards the sky. They help to provide wind protection for a roof terrace and green roof amenity for the health benefit and enjoyment of the building occupants.

Layered stone facades are used to invoke the existing scale of the surrounding buildings. The use of stone enhances the ‘gravitas’ of the building to anchor it to the street. When juxtaposed with the “slick” glass planes, the stone façade creates a foil for the angled glass plane façades behind and further signifies the location of the mid-block entrance. The stone façades feature a “basket weave” pattern of stone clad precast concrete pilasters and spandrels that are stitched together to form large window openings.

The corner feature at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue with 17th Street occurs where two glass planes converge towards the intersection at an acute angle and stop short to form a full height reveal with a recessed window bay. Exposed steel structure at the reveal supports the projected ends of the thin curtain wall planes and accentuates the lightness and layering of the corner enclosure. This dramatic vertical corner element softly anchors the building in a transparent fashion and elegantly defines the building from the Rhode Island approach.

American Urological Association 19 Apr 2013, 6:10 am

Building Area 87,398 SF
Year Completed 2004
Location 1000 Corporate Blvd. Linthicum, MD
After 50 years in Baltimore City, the American Urological Association Education & Research, Inc. relocated to Anne Arundel County in 2004. The move is a result of the association’s strategic plan to consolidate its Baltimore and Houston offices.

An official groundbreaking ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the association’s 10-acre site in the Hock Business Park, where the AUA plans to construct an 84,000 gross square-foot Class A office building.

AUA, a nonprofit organization with more than 15,000 members around the world, has had its headquarters at 1120 North Charles Street in Baltimore since 1952. After two expansions – one into the northern adjacent building and one into the former Miller Bros. showroom to the south – space needs have dictated the move. Also playing a role is the association’s desire to consolidate headquarters operations with those of its Education Office in Houston, as well as the desire to be closer to Baltimore/Washington International Airport.

“We’re growing,” said Mike Sheppard, chief operating officer. “And the adjacent buildings to the south or north of us are occupied.”

The AUA Office of Education, employing 20 people in Houston, will be consolidated with the 80 staff in the Baltimore office.

“Operating our education office from the headquarters just makes sense,” Mike Sheppard said. “Having it here will help us better serve our members more cohesively.”

Space in the new building will be available for leasing by affiliate organizations, including the American Foundation for Urologic Disease, which is currently housed in the Charles Street complex.

American Urological Association (AUA) celebrates New Headquarters Building Grand Opening on January 22, 2004. AUA moves into their build-to-suit 4-story headquarters in just under 18-months for design & construction. AUA and Staubach Companies selected Boggs & Partners Architects for the design of the Building, Interiors and Future Master Plan of the Property. Hitt Contracting completed the project on time and budget.

The design and construction team used e-idc.com to help facilitate communications with interactive secured project web site and construction trailer wireless communication provided information to flow throughout the construction that assisted completing the project on schedule.
