Brainstorm Syncs ‘Come From Away’ on Broadway for Broadcast 30 Nov 2021, 7:38 pm
Brainstorm Syncs “Come From Away” on Broadway for Broadcast
DXD-8 synchronization of the live audio and video
New York City, November 2021 – The critically-acclaimed Broadway hit “Come From Away” was filmed earlier this year for Apple TV+ with the help of Brainstorm Electronics gear and Gotham Sound in NYC. At the heart of the synchronization of the live audio and video for the musical was Brainstorm’s DXD-8 Universal Clock for direct, precise synchronization of Dante A/V over IP.
Broadway’s Tony Award-winning “Come from Away” is a Canadian musical with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It is set in the week following the September 11 attacks and tells the true story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander in the province of Newfoundland Canada. The characters in the musical are based on (and in most cases share the names of) real Gander residents as well as some of the 7,000 stranded travellers they housed and fed.
In this new era of media over IP, Precision Time Protocol (PTP) has become essential as the new sync standard for AES67, SMPTE 2110, Dante and Ravenna. Flexible, reliable and easy to use, the unique DXD-8 and DXD-16 keep traditional equipment relying on Black Burst or Word Clock perfectly synchronized with an IP network, or vice versa. The project also utilized Brainstorm’s versatile SR-112 Timecode Distripalyzer, a timecode reader, distributor, reshaper, analyzer and optional generator used extensively in live applications as the standard for show control.
Peter Schneider, co-founder of Gotham Sound, explained, “We worked closely with production mixer Tod A. Maitland and TV Tech Managers’ engineer in charge Brett Discus to make sure the production was glitch-free. Brainstorm was at the heart of the clock in terms of keeping the audio recording with the video recording synchronized. If those two clock sources are not linked, then the audio recording and video recording will slowly drift out of sync. Brainstorm was the ideal way to link these two independent clocks and synchronize them referenced to the same clock.”

Los Angeles Oct 2021 (V 2.15 was updated Jan 2022 to V 2.16 to include a bug fix) – Brainstorm Electronics announces the release of firmware version 2.15 for its DXD Universal Clocks, which adds AVB support. This follows a recent release which added PTPv1 for Dante Synchronization, in addition to PTPv2. With these 2 releases, the DXD can now provide complete PTP sync for media over IP.
AVB (Audio Video Bridging) is an open IEEE standard. The MILAN protocol has been adopted by manufacturers such as AudioScience, Avid, Biamp, Meyer Sound, L-Acoustics, d&B audiotechnik, Adamson and Luminex, AVB has gained interoperability and has found increased acceptance in live sound installations.
With the AVB firmware, the DXD is a reliable gPTP Grandmaster. The multiple ports of the DXD-16 can act as a clocking bridge between AVB, AES67 and Dante, while keeping legacy equipment in perfect sync.
Firmware 2.15 supports both versions of AVB, IEEE 802.1AS-2011 and IEEE 802.1AS-2020, as well as IEEE 1588-2019 (PTP 2.1). This release adds several new status pages, providing valuable information for set up or troubleshooting.
Brainstorm Electronics is also announcing the release of new Dante tutorials for the DXD-16 and DXD-8 Universal Clocks, available on the Brainstorm web site. Included are Quick Start and Set Up guides describing in detail the different parameters and settings for easy Dante sync. The Quick Start guide describes how to configure the DXD as a Dante Primary Leader Clock (PTP Grandmaster). The Set Up guide outlines simple troubleshooting steps and describes how to set the DXD as a Dante Follower (PTP Slave) and how to sync non-Dante devices with a Dante system.

Los Angeles Jul 2021 –Brainstorm Electronics announces the release of version 2.14 for the DXD line, adding support for IEEE 1588-2002, aka PTP v1, which is mainly used by Dante products.
Available for models DXD-16 and DXD-8, this new firmware enhances the system for direct, precise synchronization of Dante A/V over IP products. The DXD devices can now be a PTP v1 Grandmaster or a PTP v1 Slave, leading or following Dante, making them extremely flexible and adaptable to most scenarios. As a PTP v1 Grandmaster, the DXD can can also lock to a traditional sync reference such as WC, AES, Black Burst (SD video sync), HD video tri-level sync or 10 MHz, in addition to it’s internal crystal or GPS with the optional GPS receiver.
The DXD-16, with its 4 PTP ports, can act as a bridge between a Dante network and AES67 PTP v2 devices, while remaining totally independent and separate, by setting one port for PTP v1 and another for PTP v2.

Los Angeles Mar 2021 – Brainstorm Electronics announces the release of version 2 firmware update for the DXD line adding a slew of new features to the universal clock including PTP, GPS and LTC functions.
In this new era of media over IP, PTP (Precision Time Protocol) has become extremely important as it is the sync standard for AES67, SMPTE 2110, Dante and Ravenna. The DXD can now be a PTP Grandmaster locked to its internal crystal or to an external reference including WC, Video Sync or 10 MHz. It can also be a PTP Slave locked to an external Grandmaster.
In addition, version 2 brings support for the Brainstorm GPS receiver (DXD/GPS) that can be installed inside the DXD. GPS not only provides an extremely accurate source for clocking and for Time-Of-Day, but also enables remote DXD units to be locked and in phase with one another when referenced to GPS.
Version 2 also offers an optional LTC package that includes two timecode generators. Each can be set as a Time-Of-Day timecode generator or as a simple Run/Stop/Cue generator locked to the DXD reference, at any standard format or rate. Parameters are included for the Daily Jam per ST-2059.
Flexible, reliable and easy to use, the unique DXD-8 and DXD-16 keep traditional equipment relying on Black Burst or Word Clock perfectly synchronized with an IP network, or vice versa.
Brainstorm Electronics President Bernard Frings explains the challenges that lead to the new firmware upgrade, “The DXD line was designed to meet the sync requirements of multiple environments by combining traditional legacy sync (word clock, AES black, video Black Burst or Try-Level sync) with IEEE1588 PTP (Precision Time Protocol) and GPS. IP is clearly the future but a smooth transition is needed.”
Brainstorm Electronics is a world leader in pro Audio/Video sync solutions. From time code to low-jitter word clock and video sync, and now PTP and GPS, Brainstorm products have been used and trusted for over 30 years by engineers worldwide in post, broadcast and live environments. Both DXD-8 and DXD-16 units are now shipping.

Brainstorm Launches New DXD Hybrid Clocks at Winter NAMM
The new DXD-8 and DXD-16 provide a precision legacy reference clock along with PTP grandmaster clock and GPS
Anaheim, CA, Winter NAMM 2019 – Brainstorm Electronics have been providing sync solutions for media production for over 30 years and can be found in top facilities throughout the world. The company’s products are known for their robust build and reliable operation in both simple and critical applications. The new DXD-8 and DXD-16 feature a hybrid approach to sync design, incorporating a precision audio and video reference generator merged with a PTP grandmaster clock and GPS, designed to ease the transition to IP.
Both units are extremely versatile with universal outputs supporting SD and HD video sync, word clock, AES and 10MHz, that allow the user to determine exactly how to configure their sync distribution. And with support for PTP and GPS the DXD is able to keep A/V legacy equipment perfectly synchronized with a modern IP infrastructure. This can be in a new IP facility, even with a legacy island, or a legacy facility with an IP island. The hybrid approach greatly simplifies to move to IP. As a PTP Grandmaster clock, the DXD keeps a complete infrastructure locked to a single reference source.
Both the DXD-8 and DXD-16 can be remotely controlled via web browser. The DXD-8 features four reference generators, eight unique universal outputs, two external reference inputs and optional PTP, GPS and OCXO. The DXD-16 includes PTP so can act as a PTP Grandmaster with 4 independent Ethernet ports, six legacy reference generators, sixteen unique universal outputs, two external reference inputs, with optional GPS, OCXO and SDI.
Brainstorm Electronics President Bernard Frings explains the challenges that lead to the development of the new DXD range, “New standards such as AES67 and ST2110, along with other technological improvements are changing production dramatically. IP is clearly the future but going all-IP is a huge change and demands major investments so many facilities are choosing a hybrid approach for a smoother transition. The DXD line was designed to meet the sync requirements of both environments by combining traditional legacy sync (word clock, AES black, video Black Burst or Try-Level sync) with IEEE1588 PTP (Precision Time Protocol) and GPS.”
Both units are available now, with the future proof PTP feature available Spring 2019 as an option for the DXD-8 and free upgrade for the DXD-16.
