YOUR ROLE
If you love working outdoors while gaining hands-on experience, the Field Assistant position is the perfect career for you. You’ll work alongside some of the most experienced industry leaders and will learn how to:
– Operate survey instruments, GPS, and computer.
– Record measurement and other information obtained during the field survey activities.
– Assist in the determination of precise geographic locations with GPS equipment.
Your duties will include:
– Placing survey monuments and marker posts with sledgehammers.
– Digging holes and clearing brush from sightlines.
– Operating ATVs, UTV, snowmobile, company truck, jackhammer, pipe locators.
– Marking well-sites and pipelines with wood stakes.
– General equipment maintenance.
– Maintaining and organizing equipment and tools used on the work site.
– Active participation in and proactively support the advancement of Caltech’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Program.
– Being a company ambassador while on site and when in contact with stakeholders.
Your working conditions will include:
– Primarily fieldwork; in all weather conditions.

YOUR ROLE
As a Field Supervisor, you will manage a field crew and perform field survey work on exciting projects in the construction, pipeline, oil and gas, land development and legal land surveying industries.
Your duties will include:
- Managing and perform field survey work with the help of Survey Assistants.
- Liaising with Project Managers and clients to coordinate field survey work, to review and manage project budgets, timeline requirements, priorities and survey methodology.
- Providing guidance, leadership and mentorship to Survey Assistants.
- Acting as a company representative, liaising directly with client field representatives, landowners and other stakeholders.
- Preparing and communicate field notes, sketches, checklists and digital data in required formats for Project Managers, Land Surveyors and Drafting personnel.
- Participating in Caltech Group Ltd.’s health and safety program.
- Other duties are required.
Your working conditions will include:

- Frequent long-distance travel (driving), extensive time spent in hotels.

YOUR ROLE
The Geospatial Specialist focuses on capturing, processing, and analyzing geospatial data using advanced surveying technologies and methodologies. Their field surveying duties include the collection, QA/QC, troubleshooting, maintenance, documentation and development of aerial lidar, UAV photogrammetry, bathymetric, terrestrial laser scanning and RTK-GNSS surveys. Additionally, office responsibilities include processing, refining and delivering high-quality geospatial projects including point clouds, imagery, maps, reports, 3D surfaces and models.
Your duties will include:
Lidar Data Collection
- Installing airborne mapping equipment on a variety of different types of helicopters
- Aerial mapping flight operations from a variety of different types of helicopters
- Field troubleshooting, processing and QA/QC of aerial surveying missions
- GNSS RTK and static network surveying
- Terrestrial Laser Scanning data collection and troubleshooting
- RPAS aerial mapping data collection
- Bathymetric surveying with a boat and unmanned vessel
- Develop, train and troubleshoot geospatial field surveying practices
Process & QA/QC review of Geospatial Survey Data
- Process and extract data from 3D sources such as LiDAR and imagery
- Perform LiDAR relative adjustment, registration, absolute adjustment, and classification
- Process imagery, including coordinate transformations, indirect/direct georeferencing, bundle block adjustment, and generating derivative products (e.g., point clouds, 3D textured mesh, DSM, DTM, orthomosaics)
- Interpret field notes, sketches, legal plans, air photos, and digital datasets for geospatial analysis
- Review Building Information Models (BIM) for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with project and client specifications
- Assess geospatial deliverable accuracy and generate verification reports
- Ensure compliance with geospatial standards, procedures, and data integrity best practices

- Working knowledge of Geospatial surveying and mapping software including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, TopoDOT, TerraSolid, Cintoo, Hydromagic, Timble Realworks, and Global Mapper software
- Experience with processing lidar data using Phoenix, Novatel, and TerraSolid software
- Transport Canada RPAS Operators License
- Strong attention to detail; ability to ensure deliverables conform to specifications
- Ability to read and interpret information from survey plans, maps, field notes, and typical job set-up search results

Spotlight on Giving: Star of the Month Donations 16 Oct 2024, 9:27 am
For the team at Caltech, giving back has always been a priority. Since our earliest days—when the team consisted of just two surveyors—Caltech has prioritized supporting the communities we serve.
Since 2021, Caltech has proudly implemented the “Star of the Month” program to ensure our community support aligns with the values important to our team. This initiative serves to celebrate and recognize outstanding staff members each month, reinforcing our commitment to our people. Open to all Caltech employees, this award highlights those who exemplify our core values, showcasing the spirit and excellence that drive our organization forward.
Since its creation, the award has included a donation from Caltech to the charity of the employee’s choosing. More than $18,000 has been contributed to Canadian charities so far. The most popular causes? Animals, health care, kids and sports.
If you ask Caltech employees, they’ll tell you this award is a great way to give back to the causes they believe in.
Kim Fitzpatrick, CAD Technician
When Kim Fitzpatrick received her Star of the Month award, she immediately knew where she wanted her donation to go. Kim’s mother lives in Inverness, Cape Breton, and Kim spends a lot of time at the beach there. After a local resident experienced injuries that confined him to a wheelchair, the community made the beach more accessible and inclusive. “The day I won the award, I was at the beach and I saw a lady around the same age as me that was in a wheelchair who had a smile that could light up a room,” Kim says. “The reason I chose the Inverness Beach Accessibility Equipment program was so there can be more smiles. Enjoying the ocean brings a sense of peace and enjoyment that everyone should be able to experience.”

Jason DaCosta, Vice President, Strategic Growth
For Jason DaCosta, his award was used to support a family in crisis. Jason created a Go Fund Me campaign to support the family of a close friend who passed away from a massive heart attack. Jason’s co-worker, Andrew McFarlane, chose to donate his award to the same effort after being inspired by Jason’s contribution. “I am so proud of our donation program,” Jason says. “It shows Caltech’s commitment to the communities where we work and live, and I love that Caltech sees valuing in supporting and recognizing their staff.”
The contributions from the two Caltech team members helped the surviving family members cope with their tragic loss and make plans for their future.
Kent Linder, CAD Technician
In Kent Linder’s case, this Star of the Month Award made it possible for him to contribute a lot of enjoyment to residents of the Sunset Special Care Home facility in Regina. Kent used the award to purchase a commercial popcorn machine for residents of the facility.
“The donation program gives each person a chance to have their hard work and dedication to Caltech make a difference,” Kent says. “In our case, the donation of my award made it possible for all residents to have a warm bag of popcorn when watching their movies. The residents are still talking about how grateful they are almost a year later.”

“We look at the Star of the Month program as an excellent way to support our team and our community at the same time,” says Jade McLeod, Caltech’s President. “Our people are the key to our success, and it’s a great way for us to recognize our team member’s outstanding contributions and at the same time support groups that are making a big difference in our communities.”
While every donation has its own unique and compelling history, one fact that is consistent is the joy that comes from helping others. And for others that have contributed to the program, they get to witness the significant impact their efforts have had on organizations that truly matter to them, making a meaningful difference.

From Farm Fields to Field Notes: The Journey of Camara Froese in Geomatics 8 Oct 2024, 9:31 am
At Caltech, we’re quick to recognize that our success is due to our people. No matter what the task, we pride ourselves on having passion for the work, and a commitment to geomatics. As a prominent figure at career fairs and recruitment events across Canada, Caltech is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of geomatics professionals. Team members like Travis Wolfe and Camara Froese are a great example of how a shared love of surveying can help put young people on the path to geomatics excellence.
Travis launched his career as a professional surveyor more than 25 years ago. Most recently, he’s helped guide Caltech’s operations as Vice President of Operations, in addition to his former role as President of the Saskatchewan Land Surveyors Association that he completed this year. And while Camara doesn’t have the decades-long history with surveying that Travis does, she certainly shares his passion for the industry and optimism for its future.

Travis Wolfe embarking on his surveying career more than 25 years ago
Travis and Camara first met when Camara was considering her long-term career prospects at a job fair in Saskatchewan. He was attending the event to represent the Saskatchewan Land Surveyors Association.
“The first time I met Camara was when she was in grade 11. She mentioned she was interested in surveying, and I told her if you already like doing this kind of thing, you could get paid to do it,” Travis says.
“At the time I had next to no idea what surveying even was,” Camara recalls. The career fair had included presentations from different industries, and she was intrigued by Travis’ slide show on surveying. “I remember Travis talking about getting to work outside, and I was definitely attracted to the opportunity to work off the quads. I grew up on a farm and spent many hours quadding in our pasture hills, and chasing cows,” Camara says. She soon learned that Saskatchewan Polytechnic was offering a geomatics course at the Moose Jaw Campus, which would allow her to study close to home.
“As soon as I got home, I remember telling my mom that’s what I was going to do,” she says. “I immediately started planning my high school courses around having the proper math and other classes to apply to the program. Somehow, I just knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Camara wasn’t the only one having important realizations at the career fair. Travis knew immediately that Camara would be an asset to any geomatics firm. “I recognized her the next year when she was back at the career fair,” he recalls. “Camara had already applied to the geomatics program at Sask Polytech, so I encouraged her to stay in touch as my company hired a lot of people from the geomatics program during their work terms.”
Camara went on to work for Travis’ company at that time and was even able to complete a few jobs for him before he left the company to join Caltech. “I think that year our company hired almost the whole class from Saskatchewan Polytechnic,” Travis recalls. “It was one of the best classes of geomatics students I’ve ever seen.”
After Camara graduated with her Diploma in Surveying and Geomatics Engineering Technology in 2015, she spent most of the next decade working in the field in Saskatchewan. “I don’t think there was one specific reason for going into surveying but that it suited my interests,” she says.

Her work has given Camara a new appreciation for the hardworking men and women she sees on the job every day. “I’ve found I can learn something from each person I have had the pleasure of working with. I think this has made me adaptable in my career and opened me up to asking questions. Each crew chief does things differently and sometimes what works for you doesn’t work for them. It’s crazy how there are many different solutions to the same problem, but yet we all get the job done at the end of the day.”
When Camara was looking for a change after spending eight years at the same company, an old classmate convinced her to apply to Caltech. “It was an easy decision to join the team,” Camara says. “Caltech has given me the opportunity to continue doing what I love doing, while also staying close to my growing family. They see what work-life balance means to me, and I appreciate that.”
And while she doesn’t get to work with Travis as often as she’d like, she knows that he’s there if she needs advice or encouragement.
What does the future hold for Camara? “I guess long term, I would like to be the one sharing my knowledge and experience with the younger generation of surveyors. I’ve always been interested in the new technology and processes in which we collect data. I would like to be able to share those interests with others,” she says.
When Travis reflects on Camara’s career and contributions, he’s not surprised at all that she’s accomplished. “Camara was operating like a seasoned party chief at 20-years-old, and has always operated at a level significantly higher than her years of experience!” he confirms.
As Camara envisions her future in geomatics, she approaches it with optimism and excitement for what’s to come. Looking ahead, Camara is committed to pushing the boundaries of her field, confident that her dedication and pioneering spirit will lead to remarkable opportunities and advancements. With a forward-thinking mindset, she anticipates a future where her work in geomatics not only contributes to industry breakthroughs but also inspires others to pursue their own chance journeys.

At Caltech, we pride ourselves on our commitment to excellence in every task we undertake. But our dedication goes beyond just doing the best job today—it extends to shaping the future by nurturing the next generation of geomatics experts. One of the most impactful ways we do this is through our co-op program, which invites students to gain hands-on experience and develop their skills under the guidance of our experienced team.
Every summer, we welcome several co-op students to our team. This year was no exception, and as students across the country return to school, two of our recent co-ops shared their experiences. Their stories show the value of these programs, both for the students and for companies like Caltech.
Christian Wildt
Co-op Field Assistant
“I was introduced to Caltech at the Geomatics Exposition at the University of Calgary. Throughout the application and interviewing process, Caltech was the obvious choice! I cannot thank the staff enough for making me feel welcome and always going the extra mile.
My time at Caltech this summer has been invaluable! I learned more about laser scanning, drone flights, legal surveys, and equipment management—all things that I did not have much experience with and will be able to use throughout my career,” Christian says.

Beyond applying their existing knowledge, co-op students also develop new skills that are crucial for their future careers. They learn the importance of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving in a professional setting. They also gain technical expertise that will set them apart in the job market.
“I had the privilege of working with numerous mentors throughout my summer, but I worked most with Clarke Pauli. He taught me everything about drone flights and laser scanning with patience. When I made mistakes, he always corrected me in a manner that advanced my learning rather than hindering. Clarke is an integral part of Caltech’s success and is a fantastic mentor!” Christian adds.
“I hope to utilize the skills I have learned in the field as an applications engineer when I graduate. I really enjoyed working outdoors and travelling for work this summer and hope to continue working in a position where I can use my knowledge as an engineer to help people solve problems.”
Christian headed back to the University of Calgary to complete his bachelor’s degree in Geomatics Engineering and he plans to graduate in May of 2025.

“Co-op programs are an essential part of a good education. One of the reasons I took surveying to begin with was the opportunity for work experience during school and I am happy Caltech provides students with real work experience for their education. During the day when we are working together, I try and take as many opportunities as I can to show Christian why we do things and to discuss the many different aspects of surveying. We often work together as a field supervisor and assistant combo. We often discuss the various aspects of each job on the way to site in the morning.”

Co-op CAD Technician
For students, the transition from academic learning to practical application can be daunting. Our co-op students don’t just observe—they actively participate in projects, solve real problems, and contribute to our ongoing work. This hands-on experience is something that cannot be replicated in the classroom.
“I was particularly drawn to the internship because the company uses AutoCAD and GIS, areas I have studied and am passionate about it. I was also excited about the opportunity to see my knowledge and interests applied in real-world work,” Busaba says. “During my first year at university, Caltech visited the school to present their work and explain how their programs align with various roles and responsibilities. As an international student still exploring my options, this presentation was incredibly insightful and helped me understand what to look for in my program. Although I wasn’t accepted for my first work term, I didn’t give up after my first attempt, and I continued to pursue an opportunity with Caltech for my second work term. I was thrilled to finally have a chance to join the company.”

“I felt a bit nervous since I have no previous experience in drafting. Thankfully, my mentor was very supportive. She guided me through every step. Even after three months, I still asked a lot of questions, but I never felt embarrassed. My colleagues are friendly and always ready to help, and I learn something new every day. This is exactly the support, knowledge, and teamwork I was hoping for. My next step is to keep practicing what I’ve learned at Caltech and learn more at school. Working as a co-op at Caltech has helped me clarify what I want in my career and to see my goals more clearly. I’m very happy to be part of this internship.”
For now, as Busaba is back at school, she is already thinking about how she can contribute her skills to the next work term.
Busaba’s mentor, Elaine Saunderson, Production Lead:
As the production lead, Elaine not only trains co-op students, but she also trains new employees on Caltech standards and processes.
“Caltech’s co-op program is a good way to expose CAD students to the survey industry. Although the students are fluent with CAD, they usually need additional training on the DLS (dominion land survey) system that we work in. I like how Caltech’s training program is laid out for the mentor from day 1 to day 120. Keeps me on track!
With Busaba, we started by explaining the DLS system. Next, we covered the different types of projections and Caltech’s standards for wellsite and pipeline plans. Busaba started on doing corrections and finalizations to get her familiar with the palettes and software and then moved into drafting simple sketches and survey plans on her own.”
The benefits of co-op programs are not one-sided. As a company, Caltech also gains from these partnerships. Co-op students bring fresh perspectives and new ideas, often challenging the status quo and pushing us to innovate. Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn create a dynamic work environment.

Challenge
Our client embarked on a geotechnical investigation project to address the erosion issues impacting the bridges that crossed two rivers near Tisdale, Saskatchewan. The project aimed to investigate the erosion concerns arising from the interaction of the two bridges with the river flow. The challenges identified were as follows:
+ West Bridge Erosion: The west bridge experienced noticeable erosion, specifically in the shear key area, resulting from the intense spring runoff. This erosion had washed out portions of the bridge, causing abnormal erosion patterns. The compromised structural integrity of the bridge raised concerns regarding its stability and long-term viability.
+ East Bridge Erosion: Despite being newly constructed, the east bridge also encountered erosion issues. The erosion resulted in the exposure of a pipe due to the entire bank being washed out. The high water levels and associated erosion posed a risk of bridge instability, demanding urgent investigation and remedial measures.
Navigating these challenges was crucial to ensure the safety, integrity, and longevity of the bridges. Our client diligently sought effective solutions to mitigate erosion concerns and safeguard the stability of the infrastructure. Additionally, they captured an analysis of the proper water drainage to prevent future flooding.
Solution
Caltech provided comprehensive solutions to address the erosion challenges faced by our client for the Leather and Carrot River Project. They implemented a series of actions that encompassed specialized data collection, accessing difficult areas and dealing with tough terrain, as well as innovative survey methods.
+ Specialized Data Collection: Caltech utilized innovative geospatial methods. They employed tools such as Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, which enabled precise measurements, and conducted bathymetry surveys to accurately map underwater features.
+ Accessing Difficult Areas and Dealing with Tough Terrain: Caltech effectively overcame the challenges of accessing difficult areas and navigating tough terrain, Caltech employed a range of specialized techniques and geospatial tools. They effectively utilized unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and laser scanning to gather data from visually challenging areas, including both underneath and above the bridges. This approach allowed them to capture intricate details of the bridge and its intersection with the highway. Additionally, Caltech conducted bathymetric surveys utilizing remotely operated boats equipped with sonar technology to collect comprehensive information about erosion and the surroundings of the bridge. These innovative approaches ensured through data acquisition and analysis, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the landscape’s impact on the stability and integrity of the bridges.
Results:
The partnership between our client and the Caltech team on this project yielded significant results and benefits, including:
