DON McLEAN WAS GUEST FOR STATE DINNER HONORING PRESIDENT RUTO OF KENYA AT THE WHITE HOUSE LAST NIGHT 24 May 2024, 7:42 pm

‘DON McLEAN: AMERICAN TROUBADOUR’ WINS SILVER TELLY AWARD IN LONG-FORM DOCUMENTARY CATEGORY

George Floyd Lyric Video Released On Anniversary Of His Death

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Don McLean, who is no stranger to making headlines, released his latest album, ‘American Boys,’ last week, appeared at The White House State Dinner for President Ruto of Kenya, and won a Silver Telly award for his Don McLean: American Troubadour documentary, which aired on RFD-TV.

“This has been a busy week! I am thrilled to have new music out there,” says McLean.  “I have been working on this album for a few years, and it’s finally out!  Plus, I was at The White House. What else could be better?”

As part of McLean’s new album and on the heels of the 5th anniversary of George Floyd’s death, McLean is releasing a lyric video to the song The Ballad of George Floyd. Watch here: https://youtu.be/mdTBa6pxNJY?si=c-2fbgTM55OYuJqt

“Yes, I knew and know this song would be controversial to put out there, but it is exactly what I was feeling when I wrote it, and as an artistic, creative person, I just couldn’t let my feelings go,” adds McLean. “I truly could hear George crying out for his mother as I wrote the song.”

McLean, who has brought home many awards throughout his 50-year career, can add another accolade to his ever-growing list with the Silver win in the Best Documentary (Long-Form) category. This marks McLean’s 12th Telly award win throughout the years.

“Things are really exciting. I love all of this. For the first time in a long time, I feel so much energy and excitement surrounding my life’s work,” continues McLean.  “My manager, Kirt Webster, keeps coming up with these ideas, and then we bring them home. It is absolutely great.”

Don McLean Releases ‘American Boys’ Album, Available Now 20 May 2024, 1:59 pm

McLean’s Insights Shared Exclusively in Interviews with PEOPLE and Daily Mail UK, Ahead of His Noteworthy Visit to the White House

McLean To Headline The Long Road Festival (UK) In August

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Don McLean, GRAMMY winner, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Musicians Hall of Fame, and Music City Walk of Fame honoree, is proud to celebrate the release of his latest album American Boys (Friday, 5/17) an ode to the originators of modern rock ‘n roll.

McLean arrived in New York Sunday, May 19th, to make rounds with media to discuss his latest album effort, plus his invitation to join Kenyan President William Ruto at the White House for a State Dinner Thursday, May 23rd in Washington.

Don McLean is not one to shy away from controversial topics – and has been known to speak his mind on frequent occasions. McLean was recently quoted as saying Prince Harry should ‘shut his mouth’ in response to the UK royal’s disdain of the popular Graceland mansion, home to Elvis Presley, aka ‘The King of Rock ‘N Roll’ as discussed by Daily Mail UK.

Stateside, McLean talked with PEOPLE about the new album:

“I’m not interested necessarily in big numbers. That’s not romantic,” the “American Pie” singer tells PEOPLE over the phone from his home in Palm Springs, Calif. “In fact, when I got successful, I think it took a lot of the romance out of my career. I want to be thrilled. I don’t want to be in a stodgy, taken for granted, dead relationship either with my music or with another person.”

In his new album, ‘American Boys,’ McLean sings tributes to his heroes, including Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and many more, while also drawing inspiration from former King of England Henry VIII and the late George Floyd.

McLean will release a lyric video, ‘The Ballad of George Floyd,’ in which he recalls the unfortunate incident that took the life of a Minneapolis man in the summer of 2020, provoking widespread rioting across the U.S. and abroad. The video will be released across McLean’s social channels on the anniversary of Floyd’s passing, Friday, May 25th.

“When I heard about George Floyd calling for his mother, I said, ‘A man calling for his mother is not going to be that dangerous,'” he says. “That spoke to my heart and allowed me to write ‘The Ballad of George Floyd.’ When you’re up against it, you call for your mother.”

“When I was young, I had to fight asthma and pneumonia, and I nearly died a few times,” he says. “I learned to be a fighter. My mother, God bless her, I would be so sick that she gave me a baseball bat when I was 8 or 6 or 7, and she said, ‘If you can’t breathe, just pound this on the floor, and I’ll wake up and come and help you.’ I would call for my mother in the middle of the night, and I would be crying, and I couldn’t breathe, and she’d change the bed, and I’m sweating, and it’s awful. Awful. I’ve had an uphill fight my whole life for everything.”

Across the pond, Daily Mail UK elicited this response from the author of one of the ‘Top 5 Songs of the 20th Century’ (RIAA/NEACBSCNN) regarding Prince Harry’s dislike of the Graceland mansion:

“He doesn’t understand that Elvis is like the poor man’s king. He came from nowhere, and his recordings are among the greatest ever made. His family were as poor as they could be, and Harry criticized Elvis’s home as if he’s comparing it to Buckingham Palace, and that misses the point completely. Here’s a fellow who has been brought up to be mannerly, but you don’t criticize America when you’re living here as our guest.”

Don adds of the prince, who recently listed the US as his primary residence, ‘He just doesn’t get America.’

It’s worth noting that Prince Harry and his bride, Meghan Markle, had McLean’s song “And I Love You So” performed at their royal wedding reception six years ago today (May 19, 2018). The song was popularized by Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll.

Home Free Team With All-American Icon Don McLean for Reimagined “Vincent” 1 May 2024, 4:00 pm

Official Video Features McLean and Home Free in Tribute to Vincent van Gogh

Featured on Title Track of McLean’s ‘American Boys‘ Album Coming May 17; Home Free’s ‘Crazy(er) Life’ 10-Year Anniversary Album Out Now

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Country’s only all-vocal band, Home Free, teams with an all-American legend, offering a masterful new take on the Don McLean classic, “Vincent.”

Singing alongside McLean for a tribute to artistic struggle and misunderstood genius, the 1971 folk-rock favorite was written by the Grammy-winning icon and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, originally appearing on McLean’s seminal album, American Pie. But Home Free remake the track in their signature harmony blend, adding a rich sonic texture to match the song’s inspiration.

An official music video is also out now and features McLean, as the collaborators pay homage to impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh and world-famous artwork like The Starry Night.

Tim Foust comments, “There is a case to be made for “Vincent” being the best-written song of all time. Musically AND lyrically, it just doesn’t get any better. What an unbelievable honor to share the microphone with Don McLean on his masterpiece. And the fact that this is our second collaboration with him is surreal beyond words.”

Signaling mutual admiration, Home Free is featured on the title track of McLean’s upcoming new album, American Boys – a harmony-filled send-up to the artists who invented rock ‘n’ roll and inspired McLean’s career. The album will be released on May 17, and McLean started his 50th Anniversary Starry Starry Night Tour earlier this month.

On Monday night (4/22), Home Free were featured in “Walkin’ After Midnight: The Music of Patsy Cline,” a live-to-tape concert event at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Opening remarks were made by the First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden, with special appearances by everyone from Wynonna Judd to Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Kristin Chenoweth, Natalie Grant, Rita Wilson, Mickey Guyton, Beverly D’Angelo, Ashley McBryde and many more. The band delivered a stirring rendition of Patsy’s “Seven Lonely Days,” bringing the sold-out Ryman Auditorium to its feet for a standing ovation in the show’s first half. The band returned to the stage in the show’s second half to join Rita Wilson for her performance of “She’s Got You,” earning her praise for their “gorgeous harmonies.”

Meanwhile, Home Free released their Crazy(er) Life album in March, helping celebrate 10 years since their breakout as a band. Re-imagining popular songs from the career-defining early days when they first arrived in the national spotlight, the album nods to the hit album debut Crazy Life (Columbia Records), which was released in 2014 after Home Free won NBC’s The Sing Off.

The band is currently on tour, with shows across the U.S. scheduled through the fall – including an appearance at CMA Fest in Nashville on June 8.

Stay tuned for more Home Free news to come.

McLean recently announced his next studio album, American Boys, to be released on May 17th and distributed exclusively through BFD/The Orchard.

The album is available for pre-order, along with “The Gypsy Road” and the title track, which features Home Free. Paying tribute to his rock and roll heroes, McLean’s new single honors those who paved the way. With thirteen tracks, American Boys is exactly what every Don McLean fan has been waiting for!

“This album of all new songs took about four years to write. I worked on it during the pandemic with the help of songwriter Vip Vipperman,” McLean continued. “I love ‘American Boys’ because it reminds us that America invented Rock n Roll. America did that, and the song is a tribute to those very talented men from America.”

Don McLean Issues Statement About Israel 9 Oct 2023, 5:26 pm

“It is hard for me to control the emotions I feel for Israel at this time.”

“Having lived in Israel, I remember the neighborhoods I now see being bombed. I knew the people who faced this kind of hatred every day and went to a party every night because life is something to celebrate and it is so precious. Being there changed me forever. I have lived in a different way ever since. I was proud to write the song “Jerusalem,” for the Mayor of Jerusalem and I sing this song every night during shows. On this earth, Jerusalem is at the center of the atom of life and salvation no matter what might be going on anywhere else on the planet.”

THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED,Acclaimed Documentary Celebrating 50 Yearsof Rock Classic ‘American Pie,’Comes to Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital 15 Jun 2023, 9:09 pm

Music and Film Producer Spencer Proffer’s Exploration of Don McLean’s Enduring, Enigmatic Hit Accompanied by All-New Covers

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (June 15, 2023) – In 8½ minutes, singer-songwriter Don McLean defined an entire generation’s fears, disillusionment, grief, and even hope with the epic tapestry of the song “American Pie.”

On June 23, during the song’s yearlong 50th-anniversary celebration, noted film and music producer Spencer Proffer’s THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie,’ offering stunning insight and remarkable context for the enduringly popular song, will be available to own on Blu-ray and DVD, through Bob Frank Distribution/The Orchard, following its acclaimed premiere last year on Paramount+. Then, on June 27, the film will also be available to buy and rent on digital platforms from Paramount Home Entertainment.

The DVD and Blu-ray disc release of THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED will be accompanied by exclusive bonus materials that include covers of “American Pie” by Latin Grammy®-winning Maffio with JenCarlos; NME Award-winning performer Jade Bird; and by crossover country a capella group Home Free in a duet with McLean.

Unique among music documentaries, THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED goes far deeper than exploring an artist’s career, but takes an in-depth, cinematic look at the inspiration, creation, and influence of “American Pie,” and the way McLean’s song has become a touchstone that continues to inspire artists and music lovers today.

Beginning with the February 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson – an event that becomes an integral part of McLean’s song – THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie highlights cultural moments in America’s history and tells the stories of the people who were a part of this tumultuous time. The film reveals the secrets and meanings behind McLean’s astonishing lyrics, and their influence in the past, today, and into the future.

Called “mandatory viewing for McLean fans or anyone who has marveled at his sonic treasure” by the Associated Press, THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED “provides invaluable context to one of the most enduring and original pieces of pop music ever composed” (Chicago Sun-Times, Richard Roeper). Music bible Billboard says THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED “will delight the song’s fans … neither the song nor McLean, have lost any of their potency a half-century later.”

THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’ is produced by Spencer Proffer, whose career as a music producer has spanned decades and included some of the most iconic acts in rock history. Proffer and his production company Meteor 17 bring dazzling audiovisual storytelling techniques to the film, reimagining the music for a modern audience. The film, which debuted in cinemas and on Paramount+ in 2022, is executive produced by Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events, Paramount, and Chief Content Officer, Music, Paramount+.
