Meet CRW’s Wildlife Canines: Hercules & Ned 7 Apr 2025, 7:50 pm
At West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW), keeping the airfield safe is a top priority— and two of our most dedicated team members are covered in fur! Meet Hercules and Ned, the hardworking canines behind CRW’s Wildlife Management Program.
Hercules, an 8-year-old Border Collie, has spent years keeping our runways safe by using his natural herding instincts to humanely deter birds and wildlife from active airspace. In 2024, he was joined by Ned, a 3-year-old Border Collie who is full of energy and already making a big impact on the airfield.
Together with their handler, Hercules and Ned work around the clock to help mitigate wildlife threats and keep both passengers and pilots safe. The team works closely with CRW’s air traffic control tower to respond quickly when wildlife is spotted on or near the airfield—ensuring safe skies for every flight.
But these pups do more than just patrol. Feeling nervous about flying? You just might run into Hercules or Ned in the terminal, where they also serve as comfort animals. They love meeting travelers during impromptu meet-and-greets, community events, and school tours. Their friendly personalities and wagging tails bring smiles to faces of all ages!
In fact, he’s now the star of his very own children’s book, The Adventures with Hercules: A New Friend written by Milena E. Velez and illustrated by Jim Melton. This heartwarming story is perfect for young readers and teaches the importance of airport safety in a fun and engaging way.

Joining the team in 2024 is Ned, a three-year-old Border Collie who’s already learning the ropes. With boundless energy and a growing skill set, Ned is following in Hercules’ paw prints to keep CRW’s airfield wildlife-free and safe for aircraft operations.
Both Hercules and Ned are part of our commitment to innovative, humane wildlife management—and they’ve quickly become cherished members of the CRW family.

West Virginia International Yeager Airport Receives $8 Million for Terminal Project 29 Oct 2024, 1:22 pm
CHARLESTON, WV – West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) is pleased to announce the award of $8 million in grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, supporting the Airport’s terminal development project known as “CRW Next.” This vital funding, made possible through the strong support of Senator Shelley Moore Capito, along with Senator Manchin and Congresswoman Miller, will enable CRW to modernize its facilities and enhance the passenger experience, preparing the Airport for future growth.
The CRW Next Terminal Development Project will include significant upgrades to improve operational efficiency and comfort, such as expanded passenger amenities, a more streamlined security checkpoint, and ADA-compliant facilities. In addition, the project will include significant infrastructure improvements, including apron pavement upgrades and the realignment of Taxiways A and B, which will optimize the airport’s operational capabilities and improve safety.
Initially constructed in the 1940s and expanded over the years, CRW’s current terminal no longer meets the needs of today’s travelers. This project will address outdated infrastructure, create a more accessible and passenger-friendly environment, and ensure that CRW remains a valuable asset to the region.
The majority of the project funding will come from federal grants, including the FAA’s Airport Terminal Program (ATP) and the Airport Improvement Grant (AIG), both key FAA-funded awards. These grants will significantly shape the facility’s final design, with project costs estimated between $60 and $77 million, depending on the program scope.
“This substantial investment enables us to make critical improvements that will transform the passenger experience at CRW,” said Dominique Ranieri, Airport Director and CEO of West Virginia International Yeager Airport. “We’re thrilled to create a more welcoming environment for our travelers, supporting West Virginia’s growing role as a destination for tourism.”

CRW to Hold Full-Scale Emergency Training Exercise and Fire Training 2 Oct 2024, 2:48 pm
CHARLESTON, WV – In partnership with local emergency responders and volunteers, West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) will conduct its federally mandated full-scale emergency exercise and live fire training this week. The training will commence with daily live fire drills on Friday, October 4th, and will conclude with a full-scale emergency response exercise on Saturday, October 5th. This triennial exercise is a critical evaluation of CRW’s readiness to effectively respond to an aircraft emergency on the airfield.
During the training Friday through Saturday, travelers and those in the surrounding area may notice fire, smoke, and an increased presence of emergency response vehicles. During the triennial full-scale emergency exercise on Saturday morning, travelers may also observe an increased presence of emergency response vehicles, actors simulating injuries on the airfield, and fire and smoke as part of the drill.
“The full-scale triennial exercise is a vital part of ensuring our airport and its partners are fully prepared to handle an emergency with efficiency and precision,” said Dominique Ranieri, Airport Director & CEO. “We are incredibly grateful for the collaboration of our local emergency response teams, airport tenants, and volunteers, whose commitment and participation make this crucial training possible. Their efforts help us maintain the highest standards of safety and readiness.”
As mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), CRW is required to carry out this drill every three years. Insights and data gathered from the exercise will be carefully analyzed by airport officials to further refine and enhance the airport’s emergency response protocols.
CRW extends its gratitude to the various agencies assisting with the exercise, including the 130th Airlift Wing Fire and Emergency Services, Charleston Fire Department, Kanawha County Ambulance Authority, West Virginia State Police, Charleston Police Department, Kanawha County Emergency Management, and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department.
