Jouers de Jardin meeting on Wednesday, February 5 

Members of the GDA garden club are invited to join Master Gardener and neighbor Julia Lennox on Wednesday February 5th from 6 til 7:30 pm to learn how to prepare your gardens for Spring.  1313 Eighth Street.  Wine and nibbles will be served.   Please let us know if you will attend via email to gardendistrictno@bellsouth.net so we  get a head count.  Note:  This club is open to GDA members only.

Profiles in Preservation Program 17 Jan 2025, 3:44 am

Profiles in Preservation is going strong. With the goal of having 100 homeowners participating in its first phase, this GDA program is nearly 99% subscribed.

Led by the Board, and in collaboration with a team of architectural historians and other experts, the program’s purpose is to showcase the Garden District’s important homes and buildings and provide accurate information for the general public. In consideration for subscription fees, participating homeowners will receive an authentic history of their homes, a beautiful bronze plaque, telling the brief history of the home, a presentation book complete with the homes’ history, professional photographs of the exteriors, interiors and gardens, and a two-page spread in a beautifully executed coffee-table style book. This book will include the first 100 homes subscribed to the program.

All homes selected for this project must first meet the criteria set forth by the Historic District Landmarks Commission as a significant or contributing structure without altering its significance through exterior renovations. A common suggestion of law enforcement officials regarding safety is to have adequate lighting. Is your home well lit?

Did you know that Entergy can add more lighting to your block? If there is an Energy pole nearby, you can apply to have Energy add lighting. There is no cost for installation, and the monthly fee can be added to your bill. Choose the right light for you.  For more information, check out the Energy website here.

City Planning To Hear Short Term Rental Issue – February 26 13 Feb 2019, 6:30 pm

2019 SHORT TERM RENTAL STUDY

Request by City Council Motion M-19-6 for the City Planning Commission to conduct a public hearing and study on possibility of special programs or conditions that would allow for the issuance of two or more Residential Short Term Rental licenses to a single license holder to incentivize economic development in certain areas of the city, without imposing secondary effects relative to its residential fabric. The CPC will consider and recommend provisions including but not limited to:

• The creation of an Economic Development Incentive STR Zone, possibly to be created as an overlay zoning district;
• The size of any such zone;
• The cap on the total number of Residential STR licenses within any such zone;
• The cap on the number of Residential STR licenses per owner within any such zone; and
• The possibility of a “grandfather” provision to allow any existing or prior Temporary or Commercial license holders whose license lapsed during the Short Term Rental Interim Zoning District effectiveness to regain one or more licenses for use in the Economic Development Incentive STR Zone.

Another hearing to cover additional STR issues will be held on March 12.
