Through careful planning, creative use of high-key lighting, and genuine collaboration, we captured a series of editorial portraits that reflected Mark’s personality, dedication, and remarkable artistic style. The Challenge of Capturing Mark Vinci’s Story

Photographing an artist like Mark isn’t simply about getting technical elements such as lighting and shutter speed right. It’s about communication, chemistry, and an alignment of creative vision. However, there were also technical challenges that had to be addressed.

Blake on a sprawling ranch, capturing the essence of the man behind the pen. This editorial photoshoot wasn’t about staged portraits; it was about telling a story—his story—through my lens.

Each photo aimed to honor his love for horses, his relationship with the Western lifestyle, and the ways working on sets of legendary John Ford films etched an indelible mark on his path. The Spirit of Michael Blake

When I first met Michael on the ranch, it was clear that his love for the West was more than a childhood fascination. It was in the way he moved, the ease with which he interacted with the horses, and the reverence in his voice as he spoke of the Arizona landscape. Everything about him—his demeanor, his expressions, his stories—exuded a raw authenticity that made my work as a photographer seamless yet deeply meaningful.

Blake isn’t just an observer of the West; he carries it in his soul. Having grown up surrounded by stories of John Ford, his father’s work on film sets, and the cinematic legacy of Monument Valley, he’s lived and breathed the full Western experience. This intimate connection was what I sought to capture. Not polished or posed but real—just as the West itself has always been.

One of the most evocative aspects of the shoot was learning how deeply Ford’s work had influenced Blake. His book, The Cavalry Trilogy, explores the intertwined artistic legacy of Ford, John Wayne, and Monument Valley. These filmmakers didn’t just portray the West—they defined it for generations of audiences, relying on its stark beauty and cultural depth to tell stories that went far beyond shootouts and saloons.

When Blake shared anecdotes about spending time on sets, you could feel his admiration for their precision and artistry. He wholeheartedly believed John Ford was the greatest director in American cinema—a notion made clear in his storytelling as well as my images of him. Even as I captured candid moments during our session, it resonated that this wasn’t just any photoshoot. It was an homage to a man who, like Ford, ensures that the past is never forgotten.

The Power of Black and White Photography

Among the series of images captured during the session, one stands out above the rest. It’s this black-and-white portrait of Blake standing in the AZ desert with the McDowell Mountains in the distance, gazing into my camera. The monochrome tones were a deliberate choice, a nod to the classic Western films that defined a generation of cinema.

Much like John Ford’s use of shadows and contrast to convey emotion, the black-and-white composition strips away distractions. All that’s left is the subject, the raw Arizona sky and mountains, and the story etched onto the lines of Blake’s face. When I arrived in Phoenix from Chicago over two decades ago, one of my first stops was the Phoenix Art Museum. Coming from a city steeped in the arts, I was eager to see what Phoenix had to offer. Fast forward to today, and I find myself standing within the hallowed halls of this very museum—a museum that has now entrusted its future to Jeremy Mikolajczak, the newly appointed Sybil Harrington Director and CEO.

It was an incredible honor to photograph Mikolajczak for ImagesAZ Magazine’s latest editorial. Capturing his portrait amidst some of the most remarkable works of art in Arizona amplified the gravity of this historic moment for the Phoenix Art Museum and the artistic community it serves. The fire, the glass, the pace, it all makes for an exciting shoot with the opportunity for so many amazing images. Although, this was a few years ago for a magazine article in @imagesaz, it’s still one of my favorite shoots. It was time for a Personal Branding shoot with Kelly Autry recently. We had been discussing getting her some new headshots and product shots done for her new website that will be launching soon. She’s the owner and Artist behind the amazing handcrafted jewelry and signs for Touch of Wonder Designs(@touchofwonderdesigns). Her business is growing at a steady pace as her custom pieces become more and more well known. I am truly happy for her because she is one of the kindest and hard working women I know and I have loved watch her business grow!

We worked for a few hours capturing her personal style with her portraits that not only conveyed her style and brand, but also showed how beautiful she is! We also took time out to make sure we photographed some of her custom jewelry in a way that fits in with her company’s brand here in Phoenix, Arizona. This is the time that I truly love being a portrait photographer that works with other women and men as they search for their personal brand!

Lately I’ve been really looking deep into my work to find what it is that I truly love about being a portrait photographer. I suppose every Artist goes through this at one point or another. But when I look back over the work of this year, it is this image that hits the mark for me. It’s just a simple portrait of my son Caden. My beautiful boy. Photographing my children is by far my favorite portraits to create. Because there is nothing that fascinates me more than what goes on in their beautiful young minds with their wild imaginations and their hearts full of pure love. This was just a quick shot when I grabbed him running by to try a new light set up. I should have known he would give me so much more. Curled up in himself, but still letting me capture his confidence with a slight smile of “knowing”. Every detail tells a story of how we was probably running through the grass with one of his favorite pairs of socks on, to what I know to be one of his favorite t-shirts under there. A portrait that captures a young boy that will be a man in just a blink of my eye.
