Emma Lou Diemer (1927 – 2024) 4 Feb 2025, 3:27 am

Composer Emma Lou Diemer, equally prolific and talented as organist, pianist and Professor Emerita at the University of California, passed away on June 2, 2024. Many of her over 250 compositions have been recorded, and in addition to performing weekly services at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Barbara, she performed her own music at the Washington National Cathedral, and received many recognitions for her work in the form of awards, grants, and residencies.

Eugene Rousseau (1932 – 2024) 4 Feb 2025, 3:18 am

Eugene Rousseau, one of the pioneers of saxophone pedagogy as well as an acclaimed performer known for his emotional sensitivity and technical brilliance, passed away on August 27, 2024. He tutored a generation of saxophonists at Indiana University and later at the University of Minnesota. His published works include the method book Saxophone High Tones, available in several languages, and transcriptions of classical repertoire from Scarlatti to Debussy.

Myron’s string orchestra arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence was performed at the Berlin Philharmonic’s Karajan Academy on November 4, 2023 under the direction of violinist Lisa Batiashvili.
Meira Warshauer wins 2024 Charles Ives Award in Chamber Music 3 Feb 2025, 11:21 pm

Warshauer’s new arrangement of YES! for clarinet, piano, and drums was premiered by clarinetist Jaelynn Twitchell, pianist Julie Miller, and percussionist Aidan Sherwood on November 12, 2023 at the Sarah Snell Theater on the campus of State University of New York at Potsdam. The first performance of YES! for alto saxophone, piano, and drum set took place at UNC-Wilmington on March 17, 2024 with Gabriel Sánchez-Porras on saxophone, Elizabeth Loparits at the piano, and Mitch Hebert playing the drum set. Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, who has recorded the concerto, wrote, “YES! is an exciting, rhythmically energizing piece with lots of jazz accents and a fun, driving beat.” Orchestra and chamber versions are available in our catalogue for purchase and rental.
She won the 2024 American Prize Charles Ives Award in Chamber Music in the professional instrumental division with her trilogy Ocean Calling, which has been recorded for Navona Records and is available for download or streaming.

Gregory Walker’s Minstrels and Minimoogs released on vinyl 3 Feb 2025, 11:10 pm

The boutique New York label Freedom to Spend released Walker’s 1988 Minstrels and Minimoogs album on vinyl. “A characterful mix of computer music, found songs and prog, Gregory TS Walker’s Minstrels & Minimoogs is a wild and delightful fusion of the baroque and the space age.” (Biddles, Claire. New Works by Reza Vali 3 Feb 2025, 10:47 pm

Vali was selected as composer-in-residence at the University of Toronto New Music Festival, from January 26 to February 2. Five to seven of his works are to be performed at this event: University of Toronto New Music Festival. Later this year, The Camel Bell, a commission by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, will be given its premiere on June 6.
Shemshal (Reality Music No. 3) for Singing Flute Player and Video Projection/Electronics is now available in the Lauren Keiser Music catalog.
On March 21, Apollo Chamber Players, along with percussionist Pejman Hadadi, will present the world premiere of Bandari for string quartet and percussion in a program showcasing the cultural diversity of Houston.
Laura Schwendinger has multiple premieres upcoming 3 Feb 2025, 10:39 pm

Laura Schwendinger was a featured composer at the XXVIII New Music Miami ISCM Festival on January 22. She has been named the 2024-25 Abravanel Distinguished Visiting Composer, and her music is being presented in a concert at the University of Utah on February 2.
New upcoming performances featuring Schwendinger’s work include a NYC premiere at Loadbang Presents: Premieres Vol. 25 and A Garden Adorned Release Event at Opera America.
Ghost Music will receive its premiere on April 5-6 in Chameleon Arts Ensemble’s concert series. Based on a text by Robert Frost, it is scored for soprano, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion. On May 10, Cantori New York will present a new work titled Silent Spring in their final concert of the season, based on a libretto by Ginger Strand.

New piano reductions are available for David Schiff’s concertante works 3 Feb 2025, 10:28 pm

Schiff’s Yiddish-language opera, Gimpel the Fool, is now available for streaming at the Milken Archive of Jewish Music.
Canzonetta for Trumpet and Piano, the reduction of Canzonetta for Trumpet and Chamber Orchestra, is now available from the Lauren Keiser Music catalog. Also available is the reduction for Four Sisters: Concerto for Jazz Violin and Orchestra, originally written for Regina Carter, with Four Sisters: Concerto for Jazz Violin and Piano serving more as a rehearsal version.

Rimelis recently finished a commission for the New Jersey Youth Orchestras, a piece featuring Latin rhythms including the son montuno, calypso, and tango. Starburst Fiesta is written for three string orchestras at different playing levels with percussion. It will be premiered in May 2025.
