Researching that is ongoing points to metal fillings being potentially dangerous, as half of the filling is comprised of mercury, which has health risks. They also may contain copper, tin, silver or zinc, also of which could cause adverse reactions in some patients.

As such, tooth-colored composite or ceramic fillings are an alternative that is considered safer and that many people are turning to. Dr. Milan is an expert in evaluating and replacing metal fillings.

Three Must Haves for Optimal Oral Health 24 Mar 2025, 12:40 pm

Many people are looking for ways to enhance their oral health and the appearance of their smiles – both for health and aesthetic reasons. Fortunately, in today’s advanced dental world, there are many options to do this, in addition to routine brushing and flossing.

If you are hoping to step up your oral wellness in 2025, read on to learn more.

A trio of oral health enhancement tips

You likely already brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily (if not, you should!) or even better, maybe you even brush three times a day. However, the brush you choose matters.

Since there is a wide variety of toothbrushes on the market today, it can be tough to know which is best. However, to keep your smile its best, we recommend a soft-bristled brush, whether manual or electric. These brushed allow for thorough cleaning without harshness. And don’t forget – replace your toothbrush often…at least every three months.

Next, it is wise to use in antibacterial mouthwash in your oral health routine. This acts as an additional defense by getting into the crevices of the teeth that brushing may not reach. Be sure to select one that ADA approved for efficacy and safety.

And finally, making sure your tongue is clean is key. The tongue can be a breeding ground for bacteria when it is uncleaned. Consider a tongue brush or a tongue scraper as an added step to your oral health routine. This will help remove the bacteria – and freshen breath.

Your oral health teammate

Birmingham Center for Cosmetic Dentistry is here for you and your dental needs.

We offer customized dental treatments and procedures for any oral health issue for the whole family – all in one place.

Call today to learn more or to schedule your bi-annual oral exam. You are one call away from better oral health!

Three Culprits of Tooth Decay 17 Mar 2025, 1:45 pm

Tooth decay, also known as cavities or dental caries, can be the cause of a lot of discomfort and problems…which can lead to pain and even cost you money.

Fortunately, Birmingham Center for Cosmetic Dentistry is your ally in oral wellness and can help you avoid tooth decay and get your best smile.

First off, it’s key to know what causes tooth decay – and how to prevent it.

Keep reading for more.

What causes teeth to decay?

Insufficient oral hygiene is one of the most common causes of tooth decay. In fact, when the dentist says you should be brushing twice a day and flossing daily, they mean it! Inadequate oral hygiene at home can be destructive to teeth, as plaque can sit on the teeth for long periods of time…causing decay. Brushing and flossing is the best way to ensure this doesn’t occur.

Additionally, overconsumption of acidic and sugary drinks and foods can also cause decay. Things like candy, soda and sports drinks can attack the teeth, leading to decay fast.

And finally, dry mouth is also a culprit of tooth decay. Saliva helps to stop teeth from decaying by acting as a buffer to acid in the mouth—helping teeth to stay strong. So, a lack of saliva can pose issues to teeth. Some people suffer from dry mouth due to medication, smoking and other factors. If you suffer with dry mouth, Dr. Milan can offer some tips to help.

As always, seeing the dentist for your six-month check-up goes a long way in fending off tooth decay and identifying any oral issues that may be lurking.

When You Must Call Your Dentist 10 Mar 2025, 3:54 pm

When it comes to dental health, you may not think about it much other you’re your bi-annual oral exam and cleaning.

But the truth is, your oral health is key to not only a beautiful and healthy smile, but to your body’s health…and taking it seriously is a smart move.

Sometimes, situations or out-of-the-ordinary things occur on the teeth and gums, and you may be unsure if you should call your dentist or not.

Here are three situations when you should, in fact, call us right away.

When to call the dentist

Despite taking measures to prevent a tooth emergency, dental emergencies can occur no matter how careful you are. And other times, an odd tooth or mouth situation occurs out of seemingly nowhere.

Either way, here are three instances in which you should contact our office right away.

Tooth pain that is severe

If you are experiencing pain in one or more teeth that is persistent and not relieved by over-the-counter pain medication, you should give us a call. This could indicate an exposed nerve of the tooth or even a serious infection that is capable of spreading. This situation should have immediate dental attention to remedy it before it becomes a bigger issue.

A tooth that is knocked out

Whether by an accident or contact sport, a tooth that gets knocked out is another situation when you should call us right away. In this instance, it is crucial to be quick. Until you are able to get to us, place the knocked out tooth in milk (if you still have the tooth) until you get here – as this is the best way to save/preserve it.

Damaged restorations

When you have a broken filling or crown or broken dentures, while it may not always qualify as an emergency, it is still key to see us as soon as possible so that it can be remedied. These things can cause trouble with eating as well as causing pain.

A dentist here for you

Birmingham Center for Cosmetic Dentistry is your partner in oral wellness and dental emergencies and non-emergencies.

Causes and Treatments for Bad Breath 24 Feb 2025, 1:35 pm

Are you finding yourself struggling with bad breath? Well, you’re not alone.

Many people are subject to bad breath – or halitosis – and are looking for a cure. Bad breath can not only make a person self-conscious, but it can also even affect personal life and relationships.

But to get to the cure – you must unveil the cause. Read on for more.

What may be causing bad breath

Bad breath is often a symptom of an underlying issue happening in the mouth or body. And while it sometimes may be due to oral hygiene that is not up to par, this is not always the case.

Here are some other potential causes:

  • Poor dental hygiene
    • If you are not brushing and flossing regularly, this can cause germs to fester and bad breath to be a result. It can also cause cavities to fester.
  • Dry mouth
    • If your mouth is dry due to an illness or medication, you could be subject to bad breath, as saliva serves to clean the mouth and when it decreases, bacteria can build.
  • Smoking or tobacco use
    • If you smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product, you are at risk for bad breath.
  • Periodontal disease
    • Bad breath could be caused by periodontal disease, which bad breath can be an early symptom of.

Fortunately, there are solutions for bad breath. Solutions can be customized to each patient’s needs.

First, be sure you are seeing the dentist every six months for your professional cleaning and oral exam. This can go a long way in cleaning away germs and debris and detecting any potential issue that may be lurking.

Brush at least twice a day and floss daily to keep teeth and gums their healthiest and freshest. Be sure to brush for two minutes and change out your brush to a new one at least every three months.

Use a mouthwash that is antibacterial or one that contains cetylpyridinium chloride to keep germs at bay and freshen breath. Also, be sure to stay hydrated and try to quit tobacco use.

If you do these things and still suffer with bad breath, we encourage you to make an appointment. An oral exam can determine if there is another issue that needs to be addressed and treated.

Finding a cure…get treated for bad breath

Dr. Milan and his expert dental team are here for you.

Whether you are looking to make an appointment about bad breath treatment or some other dental issue, you can be certain Birmingham Center for Cosmetic Dentistry will make your experience comfortable and effective.
