I am Charles Austen Angell, I am a nominee for a position on the World Design Organization (WDO) board, and I respectfully seek your vote.
Having had the privilege of observing the profound global influence of WDO, I have actively engaged in its endeavors. I’ve had the honor of representing the United States as Past Chair and IDSA Trustee at ICISD events and contributing to an ICSID conference planning committee. WDO is currently at a critical juncture, and visionary leaders such as David, Srini, and the Senate and Secretariat have laid a solid foundation with transformative initiatives, positioning design as a catalyst for positive change.
To propel this forward, we must accentuate organizational excellence, foster inclusive membership growth, and establish meaningful metrics. Achieving excellence involves embracing AI and exemplifying ethical applications of this technology. Expansion necessitates strategic approaches that engage diverse global communities. Regarding metrics, it’s essential to equip leaders with the tools to showcase successful strategies.
With over 40 years of dedicated design expertise under my belt, including roles as CEO of Modern Edge Inc. and global design director for a Fortune 100 company, as well as my extensive involvement with IDSA‘s Board, as Chair of the organization, chairing design conferences, and contributing to ICSID events, I am committed to contributing my experience. Additionally, my affiliations with IDSA’s Academy of Fellows, and the Design Museum Everywhere’s Executive Board, as a founding trustee of the Design Foundation, have enriched my perspective on creating an effective board.
As designers, innovation is vital. However, as leaders, it’s imperative to build on the legacy of our predecessors and harness their momentum to significantly impact lives worldwide. In collaboration with Thomas Garvey and the new board, my goal is to build upon the remarkable achievements of recent years and drive WDO’s growth and influence to even greater heights. Let’s join forces and leave an enduring design legacy on the world.

BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Health Technology Collaborative (HTC), a Beaverton-based non-profit that clusters younger-stage health technology-focused companies, will utilize a $149,000 Business Oregon High Impact Opportunity Grant to study and validate the need and configuration of a new “inventor space” design.
The grant, awarded by the Oregon Innovation Council of Business Oregon, makes possible a feasibility study which was broadly endorsed among Oregon’s tech sector. Letters of support on behalf of the HTC came from the Portland Incubator Experiment, Oregon Bioscience Incubator, Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute, Portland Community College’s Science and Technology Division, and Intel’s IoT Group Health Business Unit.
The HTC, formerly known as the Digital Health Collaborative, fosters entrepreneurs and emerging companies by providing creative, collaborative space where companies can test the boundaries of healthcare by building and innovating new “Internet of Things” (IoT) products, services and technologies.
Frank Ille, the managing partner at HTC, describes the inventor space, “It’s a prototype lab where health technology companies, innovators and entrepreneurs engage in iterative and collaborative development. The concept is centered on providing the custom resources to support fast prototyping, standards alignment, and cross-platform device checking, as well as system compatibility.”
According to Charles Austen Angell, principal investigator for the feasibility study, “The goal is to study the need for an inventor space in the broader health technology landscape in Oregon.” He adds, “This means talking with stakeholders across the spectrum, from digital health companies to health technology manufacturers and then identifying their key needs and opportunities for accelerating technology and industry growth.” ”
“Our initial hypothesis is that an Inventor Space must have value across the spectrum of companies and organizations within the state,” explains Angell. “We want to provide, student entrepreneurs, health systems and average citizens with the tools necessary to invent the next generation of healthcare products.”
“We continue to explore and foster innovation and technology in Beaverton,” said Mayor Denny Doyle. “We look forward to this study’s recommendations about how we can join hands with the HTC to provide Oregon companies with a strategic advantage as they invent products to better the health of our world.”
About the Health Technology Collaborative
The Health Technology Collaborative (HTC), formerly known as the Digital Health Collaborative (DHC) is an innovation hub and industrial makers’ space designed to support regional health technology and Internet-of-Things markets. Residents companies include Curadite, HealthSaaS, and Modern Edge Inc.
Formed from the need to be in close proximity with other similar technology companies, the founders of the HTC know the benefits of this shared experience. In addition to the practicalities of clustering, the focus is to support larger healthcare and technology companies by creating an industry-driven collaborative that can help accelerate product development, partnering and market awareness.
Through access to shared prototyping equipment, software/cloud services, testing resources, manufacturing/product design expertise, and technology networking, the HTC has the potential to become the product development nexus point for “Internet of Medical Things” companies in Oregon and beyond.

Modern Edge has developed a unique single hand mobile interface for the Sonivate Sonicare system through extensive testing and user research at medical centers, hospitals and military installations.
User insights from this intense research program led to game changing features including a fully supported use mode for less experienced medical technicians, and special features for night-time and battlefield use.
The interface was developed in conjunction with a larger Modern Edge program to design and develop the overall wearable system and the ground breaking dual array probe. The system is now in production and shipping in the spring of 2019.

Portland Oregon — On January 25-26th, Charles Austen Angell FIDSA provided the Keynote talk at the 1.5 day TieCON 2017- Technology and Investor Conference. https://www.tiecon.org/ The event brought together entrepreneurs and investors to highlight three disruptive technology sectors – Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Life Sciences, and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality.
Mr Angell’s keynote focus on enhancing the emotional content of these technologies as well as how to prioritize your innovation strategies to reflect the true needs of end users.
• AI: Technology still falling short of of standard set by medical practitioners, IE. Watson diagnoses with 82% accuracy.
• There is a predicted 300% increase in investment expected to be seen in AI in 2017 over 2016, with 6 billion coming from VCs.
• Considerable concern continues as to how AI will be incorporated within FDA complaint devices due to the current FDA guidelines for device development.
• VA/AR: Dominant and compelling consumer platforms have not been identified. Even within gaming industry successes such as Pokeman GO, interest faded quickly.
• The implication is that much of current AR/VR trends towards novelty driven experiences rather than an emotional experience prioritizing long term human needs and behaviors.
• Entertainment companies are considering unique strategies with significant impact on their business model, IE. Six Flags is providing riders with Samsung VR headsets rather than building new roller coasters
• AR/VR is facing the similar challenges in FDA compliance as AI.
• Applications for consumer level innovation in medical AR/VR are under-represented.
“The opportunity is for companies to reorganize development strategies to be human centered, prioritizing longterm human emotional concerns over a shorter-term wow factor.’ Angell continued, “The investors themselves have a role to play in helping to steer these company strategies towards a user-centered focus, if for nothing else simply to protect their investments.” One of Angell’s top priorities as CEO of Modern Edge is assisting technology companies in human-centering their development strategies through research and design thinking.
