Weekly Recap
This week in Pawtucket, we saw a great community in action. We broke ground on the future Pawtucket High School, marking the beginning of a new chapter for public education in our city. With this state-of-the-art learning environment, we are investing in our students and laying the foundation for a stronger future. Projects like this reflect what’s possible when we work together for the next generation.
We also continued to build on the values that make Pawtucket special. At the Second Annual Phoenix Odyssey Business Consortium, the City celebrated the power of second chances. Through mentorship and programs that help people rebuild their lives after incarceration, Pawtucket is showing that transformation and opportunity go hand in hand. That same spirit carried into 390 Pine Street, where a new community space now brings together affordable housing, local businesses, wellness programs, and resources that uplift residents across the city.
This week also brought celebration and service. We kicked off Pine View Little League with big community spirit and honored those stepping into new leadership roles on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Advisory Commission on Arts and Culture. We commemorated the start of the American Revolution with a powerful reenactment and announced a $250,000 grant to restore the Moshassuck River and strengthen climate resilience. Herb Weiss, Deputy Director of the Pawtucket Senior Center, has had his 45 years of writing and advocacy on aging officially archived at Rhode Island College’s Special Collections. And at long last, we joined Centreville Bank and Rhode Island FC to unveil the new name of the team’s home field: Centreville Bank Stadium.

Pawtucket Announces Start of 2025 Yard Waste Collection Program 4 Apr 2025, 1:20 pm

Pawtucket – Mayor Donald R. Grebien and the Pawtucket City Council have announced that yard waste collection will begin the week of Monday, April 7, 2025. Residents are asked to leave yard waste bags out on their regular trash pickup day.
“Keeping Pawtucket clean and green is a priority for our community,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “Our yard waste collection program makes it easy for residents to dispose of leaves and other waste properly, helping to maintain the beauty of our neighborhoods. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this service, and as always, our Public Works team is available to assist with any questions.”
Yard waste must be placed in brown yard waste bags—available at all local hardware stores—or put in a barrel (33 gallons or less) clearly labeled “yard waste” in order to be collected. Plastic bags are not allowed for yard waste. This program does not cover wood from building materials or scrap wood.
Yard waste bags should remain separate from all other trash and recycling and cannot be mixed in with regular household trash, as mixed waste bags will not be collected. When mixed with household trash, leaves and other yard waste add significantly to the City’s disposal cost.
The leaf and yard waste program runs until December 9th, 2025.
Alternatively, residents can dispose of yard waste responsibly at the Grotto Ave. Transfer Station, using the following guidelines:
– 3 Paper Yard Waste Bags
– 3 32-gallon max. barrels
– 3 Bundles (max 3ft length, 12in diameter, no branches >3in).
For more information or questions, email dpw@pawtucketri.com or call 401-728-0500 ext. 233.

Weekly Recap
This week, Pawtucket came together in meaningful ways to celebrate the people and values that make our city special. At City Hall, the 25th Annual Peanut Butter Drive was a major success, thanks to the generosity of staff and community members. Each donation supports the Blackstone Valley Emergency Food Center and reminds us that looking out for one another is what community is all about. In that same spirit of service, the City proudly recognized the students who volunteered through the Senior to Student Snow Shoveling Program this winter. Their new hoodies are a small token of appreciation for their big efforts to help their neighbors.
We also took time to honor and uplift individuals whose contributions have shaped our community and culture. The Women’s History Month City Gallery Reception showcased the work of talented local artists and celebrated their impact on the cultural life of Pawtucket. The City joined the Cape Verdean Women’s Day Celebration and marked the opening of the Mujeres Positivas office, both events filled with inspiration and important conversations about leadership, mental health, and empowerment. We remembered the remarkable life of Armand LaMontagne, a Pawtucket artist whose sculptures brought New England’s sports legends to life and whose legacy lives on through his art.
The next generation of Pawtucket showed up strong this week. Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan brought excitement to Greene Elementary with a special reading that encouraged students to embrace their inner strength. Winters Elementary celebrated RICAS success with a VIP luncheon and parade to cheer on students ahead of next week’s testing. At Jenks Junior High, the CTE Career Fair opened doors for students exploring their future paths. We cheered on Shea High School’s Division 2 state soccer champions as they were honored by Rhode Island FC, and we celebrated rising stars at the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year event. Finally, on National Vietnam Veterans Day, Pawtucket paused to say thank you to those who served. Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Recapping another great week in Pawtucket! This week, the City joined the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year event to celebrate the next generation of leaders who are proving that dedication and determination pave the way for success. We also had reason to celebrate Tolman High School’s own Jovan Santos, who won the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Financial Literacy Trivia Challenge, securing a $500 grand prize. We couldn’t be prouder to celebrate events like these, which promote the achievements of our students.
Beyond uplifting our youth, Pawtucket showed its commitment to strengthening partnerships and honoring cultural heritage. At the Brava’s Bridge for Health fundraiser, we proudly supported the donation of Engine 8 to our friends in Brava, Cape Verde, reinforcing our international ties. Meanwhile, we stood in solidarity with our Greek community by raising the Greek flag in honor of Greek Independence Day, a powerful reminder of the diverse cultures that make Pawtucket home. We also joined the Rhode Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in celebrating the grand opening of their new building, recognizing the ongoing growth and impact of Hispanic businesses in our city and beyond.
The week was also filled with acts of service and exciting announcements. Members of the Pawtucket Police and Fire Departments took a frigid plunge into the ocean for a great cause, raising funds for Special Olympics Rhode Island and reminding us all of the power of community giving. We also joined United Way of Rhode Island for the Power of Women event, celebrating the achievements and leadership of women across the state. And for food lovers, big news—Maven’s Delicatessen is coming to the new Rhode Island FC stadium, bringing delicious deli sandwiches to the beer garden. From investing in our youth to supporting local businesses and championing inclusivity, Pawtucket continues to shine as a city that lifts people up and moves forward together.

We are excited to share the latest developments on the new high school construction project in Pawtucket. As we move forward with the planning and execution of this transformative project, we want to keep everyone informed of key updates and the next steps.
Please be aware that access around McCoy Stadium is now restricted to construction personnel only. For your safety, we ask that all community members avoid the construction zones and adhere to all posted signs and barriers. The demolition of McCoy Stadium has officially begun. This is an important step in preparing the site for the new high school. In addition, the work will focus
on clearing shrubs, trees, and other miscellaneous items around the perimeter of the site. This phase of the project will continue over the next several months, and we appreciate your patience as we work toward this exciting new development.
We are also thrilled to announce that the official groundbreaking event for the new high school will take place on April 10, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This milestone event marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our community, and we invite families and community members to join us in celebrating this historic moment.
For regular updates and detailed information about the project, please visit our dedicated project website at https://www.psdri.net/pawtucket-high-school/. The site will be continuously updated with the latest news, timelines, and information, so we encourage you to check back frequently to stay informed.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the construction project, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. You can email us by using this contact form, and we will be happy to assist you.

Weekly Recap
This week in Pawtucket was filled with moments that celebrated our city’s culture, progress, and strong sense of community. At City Hall, we proudly raised both the Irish and Italian flags, honoring the heritage and contributions of these communities. The celebration of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day brought people together in a wonderful display of culture and pride. Civic engagement was also in the spotlight, as we joined Secretary Gregg Amore at Shea High School for a meaningful discussion on the history of voting rights, reinforcing the importance of participation in our democracy.
Investing in the next generation remains a top priority for the city. We were proud to recognize the recipients of the Youth Sports Revitalization Grant, a major investment that will help expand access to youth sports and support local athletes. High school students were also in the spotlight at the Winter Key Spirit Award Breakfast, where we celebrated their hard work, leadership, and sportsmanship. Education took center stage as JMW High School students explored real-world environmental science with the help of the City’s Department of Public Works and the Audubon Society’s Storm Water Innovation Center, learning about the importance of sustainability and green infrastructure.
Pawtucket is moving forward with exciting developments that will shape its future. The new commuter rail station and Tidewater Stadium are transforming the city into a hub of transit, housing, and entertainment. Plans for the Dexter Street Commons, a $55 million mixed-use development, will bring energy-efficient apartments and vibrant commercial spaces to the heart of Pawtucket.
The community’s generosity was also on display at Spumoni’s Restaurant, where a fundraiser raised over $500 for Special Olympics Rhode Island, supporting the incredible athletes of the Pawtucket Pacers. Whether through cultural celebrations, youth empowerment, or city-wide progress, this week highlighted what makes Pawtucket such a remarkable place to call home.
