Reserve Cut @ Park 7 Dec 2024, 6:32 am

Reserve Cut @ Park - Backlit onyx Maitre d' station

Where Timeless Elegance meets Modern Dining: Reserve Cut @ Park opens in the 1920’s landmark – the Lombardy Hotel.

New York City’s #1 fine dining kosher restaurant, Reserve Cut, proudly unveils its second location in Midtown Manhattan’s iconic Lombardy Hotel.  RDHA had worked on the existing space of Reserve Cut at 40 Broad and designed this new space with an eye towards a contemporary update to the historic Lombardy shell.

Built during the roaring twenties by William Randolph Hearst for his mistress, the silent film star Marion Davies, who was known for her elaborate dinner parties within the glamourous hotel restaurant.

Like the duality of Reserve Cut’s menu of aged steaks and artisanal sushi, we married the hotels historic architectural charm with our contemporary interior design vocabulary.  Patrons enter through a classic entry arch, under a canopy and are met by a modern, geometric onyx maître-d’ station. This duality continues, as they proceed toward the main dining space, under an arched vault containing a sculptural water-wall, with a black granite plinth displaying elongated cut glass vases with a sensuous floral arrangement. Turning the corner one enters the “hall of whispers” a dramatic elongated hall with a series of eighteen contemporary arches, blurring the Classic vs. Modern design vocabulary.

Reaching a reinterpreted “living room,” a historic bar anchors the room with three classical arches.  A pair of elongated high-top tables face a modern vapor-fireplace within a classic stone mantel. Here, all the intricate wall and ceiling molding details have been preserved and further enhanced with gold pin-striped accents. Beyond the bar is a “secret grotto” used for intimate wine tastings, paired with small plates. This cozy-cave has been sculpted into a continuous three-quarter flying arched vault, that is custom lit by hand-cut crystal pendant fixtures, creating an other-worldly contemporary effect.

Adjacent to the living room is the grand dining room along with a series of private dining spaces. Here guests pass through an arched threshold, under an original 1920’s clock that has been carefully restored. The grand dining-room terminates in a dramatic thirty-foot-long arched back-lit wine wall. The entire space is lit by a series of illuminated strands that weave the dining spaces together under a constellation of light. Sumptuous leather banquettes anchor the back walls providing commanding views of the dining-room.  Meanwhile, voyeuristic glimpses are encouraged between the booths, which are separated by delicate gold beaded strands. These flirtatious moments harken back to the restaurant’s original roaring twenties glory.

Lighting Design in Wellness Architecture

Lighting design is an integral aspect of wellness architecture, playing a pivotal role in enhancing physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. Thoughtful integration of natural and artificial lighting can create environments that support human health and productivity. This article explores the significance of lighting design in wellness architecture, focusing on the impact of natural light, innovative lighting solutions, and design strategies for optimal lighting. Relevant case studies and sources are cited to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Sunlight exposure stimulates the production of vitamin D

Impact of Natural Light

Circadian Rhythm Regulation

Natural light is essential for regulating the body’s circadian rhythm, which controls sleep-wake cycles and other physiological processes. Exposure to natural light during the day helps synchronize the body’s internal clock, promoting better sleep and overall health.

Benefits:

    • Improved sleep quality
    • Enhanced mood and alertness
    • Reduced risk of chronic health conditions

Vitamin D Enrichment

Sunlight exposure stimulates the production of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. Adequate vitamin D levels are associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.

Benefits:

    • Stronger bones and teeth
    • Enhanced immune system
    • Reduced inflammation

Source: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism highlights the critical role of sunlight in maintaining adequate vitamin D levels and preventing deficiencies that can lead to serious health issues.

Design Strategies for Optimal Lighting

Maximizing Southern Exposure

Designing buildings to maximize southern exposure allows for the greatest amount of natural light throughout the day, particularly in northern hemisphere locations. This strategy can significantly enhance indoor lighting quality and energy efficiency.

Benefits:

    • Increased natural light exposure
    • Reduced energy consumption
    • Improved thermal comfort

Case Study: Summer House, Mill Basin, NY

At the summerhouse, natural light plays a dynamic role for its owners.  The design focuses on the rear yard wellness-deck and pool bathed in southern light with a large 2nd story balcony with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels.  A clerestory skylight floods the interior with light. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the home but blurs the separation between indoors and outdoors.   This celebration of light and the outdoors contributes to a calming social atmosphere that promotes relaxation and well-being for the owners and guests alike.

Mood Enhancement

Natural light has a profound impact on mood and mental health. Exposure to natural light increases serotonin levels in the brain, which helps reduce the risk of depression and anxiety.

Benefits:

    • Improved mood and emotional well-being
    • Increased energy levels
    • Reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety

Case Study: Mohonk Mountain House Spa – New Paltz, NY

Combine natural light with nature and you have a winning combination – nature nurtures!

This is the ethos behind the 155-year-old Mohonk resort located within 1,325 pristine acres within the Catskill mountains.  Here we redesigned the existing Spa and created some light infused experiences.  Guests come to Mohonk to hike the 85 miles of trails in pure nature, so we designed a rustic “summer cottage” where hikers can restore their weary muscles with a relaxing reflexology foot treatment and then receive the best massage of their life.  We specifically designed an open-air pavilion for that purpose, nestled in the forest, and strategically sited it on a cliff that overlooks the lake below.  Here, blissed-out guests take in the 360-degree views of the lake before and after their massage.

Another unique experience is our indoor pedicure located within the renovated Salon.  We designed a raised “social banquette” where guests can take in a commanding view of the forest’s changing seasons.  The interior lighting was designed to address a multitude of functions. The warm, subdued ambient lighting allows the outdoor tableau to become the prominent feature, while the use of spotlights highlight the pedicure work surface.

This thoughtful integration of light + nature provides a holistic approach to wellness, where the environment plays a crucial role in enhancing the therapeutic benefits of Mohonk’s sensory experience.

Innovative Lighting Solutions

Smart Lighting Systems

Smart lighting systems mimic natural light patterns, adjusting brightness and color temperature throughout the day to align with the body’s circadian rhythms. These systems can create a dynamic lighting environment that supports health and well-being.

Features:

    • Automated lighting adjustments
    • Customizable settings
    • Energy efficiency

Case Study: Philips Hue

The Philips Hue smart lighting system is widely used in both residential and commercial spaces. Users can program the lights to change color and intensity according to the time of day, promoting better sleep and overall well-being.

Use of Full-Spectrum Lighting

Full-spectrum lamping replicates the spectrum of natural sunlight, providing health benefits similar to those of natural light. These lamps can be used in various settings to improve mood, productivity, and overall well-being.

Features:

    • Enhanced color perception
    • Improved mood and energy levels
    • Reduced eye strain

Source: Lighting Research Center

Research from the Lighting Research Center indicates that full-spectrum lighting can significantly improve mood and cognitive performance, making it an excellent choice for workplaces and educational environments.

Incorporating Adjustable Window Treatments

Incorporating adjustable window treatments, such as blinds and shades, allows for control over light levels and glare, adapting to different needs and times of the day. This flexibility can improve comfort and productivity.

Features:

    • Enhanced light control
    • Reduced glare and heat gain
    • Improved privacy

Benefits of Biophilic Design

Biophilic design increases occupants’ connection to the natural environment.  Our design philosophy goes beyond mere aesthetics and aims to foster a deep connection between end users  and the natural world.

We incorporate natural building materials, natural light, vegetation and a connection to the outdoors in all our Architectural and Interior Design.

From miniature gardens and hanging terrariums to ambitious healing gardens, regardless of the size, the outsized impact on our mental and physical health is dramatic.

Allow me to share with you examples from our body of work illustrates this point and has brought an enhanced “quality of life” to our clients.

…the strategic utilization of natural light within buildings – I call it the halo effect.

Natural Light: Enhancing Mood and Energy

One of the fundamental principles of biophilic design is the strategic utilization of natural light within buildings – I call it the halo effect.

This approach not only reduces reliance on artificial lighting but also has significant implications for human health and well-being. Exposure to natural light has been linked to numerous benefits, including:

  • Mood Enhancement: Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with mood regulation. Increased exposure to natural light can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

  • Energy Boost: Daylight exposure helps regulate circadian rhythms, leading to a better nights sleep thereby increasing energy levels during the day.

Case Study: The Well Living Lab conducted a study on the impact of natural light on office workers’ health and productivity.

The research found that employees working in spaces with abundant natural light reported higher levels of well-being + productivity compared to those in artificially lit environments.  [Source: The Well Living Lab]

Vegetation: Improving Air Quality and Aesthetics

Integrating vegetation within the built environment is another key aspect of biophilic design.

Plants not only add visual appeal to a space but also contribute to improved air quality and overall well-being. Some benefits of integrating vegetation into design include:

  • Air Purification: Plants act as natural air filters, removing harmful pollutants and toxins from indoor environments. This leads to cleaner air and reduced instances of respiratory ailments.

  • Visual Connection to Nature: The presence of greenery indoors creates a visual connection to nature, which has been shown to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

  • A Peaceful Calm in the City: Indoor plants add an intrinsic calming effect to counter the hustle and bustle of the city, providing a welcome respite.

Case Study: Our design for a new Hyatt hotel in Harlem (HHH).

Harlem has the lowest greenspace per capita of all the 5-boroughs, so we purposely focused on creating a pitched triangular green space that connects an elevated walkway to the hotel plaza.

We continued this experience with a “green” handshake as you pull the entry doors leading into a 3-story lobby atrium.

The atrium features lush hanging English ivy that cascades down from an upper story planter that enhances aesthetic appeal while improving the overall indoor air quality, further increasing guest satisfaction.

Natural Materials: Establishing a Connection to Nature

The use of natural regionally sourced materials such as wood, stone, and plants that are a hallmark of our biophilic design.

These materials not only evoke the textures and colors of the natural world but also offer numerous benefits in terms of sustainability.

Mohonk-Material-Board

…where light streams thru the clerestory producing an other-worldly welcome.

Key advantages of incorporating natural materials include:

  • Biophilic Aesthetics: Natural materials create a sense of warmth and authenticity, enhancing the overall ambiance of a space.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Compared to synthetic materials, natural materials have a lower environmental impact and can be sourced responsibly, contributing to sustainable building practices.

Case Studies: The Mohonk Mountain House design for the Spa in the Adirondak’s, and our Spa at Amelia Island, near Jacksonville, FL, is often cited as a prime examples of sustainable architecture that prioritizes the use of natural materials.

The building’s interior timber structure creates a warm and welcoming environment for “wellness seekers”, it celebrates natural light within it’s 2-story timber framed space where light streams thru the clerestory producing an other-worldly welcome.

Water Features: Promoting Calmness and Well-Being

Water elements such as fountains, ponds, reflective pools and waterfalls are frequently incorporated into our guest processions, to evoke a sense of tranquility and a connection/recall of nature.

The presence of water has been shown to have numerous positive effects on human health and well-being, including:

  • Stress Reduction: The sound of flowing water has a calming effect on the nervous system, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

  • Improved Air Quality: Water features help humidify indoor environments, which can alleviate respiratory issues and enhance overall air quality.

Case Study: Our Vdara Hotel & Spa with its 2-story water curtain in Las Vegas, features a waterfall behind the front reception desk that beacons guests to climb the stairs as part of the entry sequence.

This water element, serves as a focal point the design creating a serene environment with the gentle sound of trickling water that also provides visual delight.

Views of Nature: Connecting Indoors to Outdoors

Designing buildings with ample views of nature is a core principle of our biophilic design.

Whether through large windows, balconies, outdoor terraces or interior garden spaces we provide occupants with a visual connection to nature offering numerous benefits, including:

  • Biophilic Connection: Views of nature help occupants feel more connected to the outdoors, even when indoors, which can effect our mood and ones health.

  • Stress Reduction: Studies have shown that exposure to the natural environment can reduce stress levels and improve overall mental acuity.

Mohonk-Lakeview-Summer-HouseMohonk Mountain House Rustic Massage Pavilion – RDH Architects

Mohonk Mountain House, nestled amidst the scenic Shawangunk Mountains of New York, epitomizes the harmonious relationship of “architecture within nature”.

This historic resort, founded in 1869, seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings, boasting breathtaking views of Lake Mohonk and miles of hiking trails integrating visitors within its abundant forests.

With its “rustic” outdoor massage pavilion, expansive verandas, Mohonk offers guests a tranquil retreat where they can immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world.

Whether hiking along scenic trails, kayaking on the lake, or simply unwinding  in a rocking chair with an intoxicating view of the striated cliffs across the lake beyond.

Visitors to Mohonk Mountain House are enveloped in a sense of peace and tranquility that can only be found in communion with nature.

Revisiting the benefits of Biophilic Design in Architecture + Design

In conclusion, biophilic design offers a truly holistic approach to architecture and design that prioritizes nature while sensitively integrating the built environment.

Here a lighter architectural approach where the natural environment takes the leading role.

By reconnecting occupants with nature in meaningful ways, our biophilic design approach has the potential to transform the way we live, work, sleep and interact with the built world around us.

As demonstrated by our numerous successful case studies, embracing biophilic principles can lead to spaces that not only look beautiful but also support the health, well-being, and happiness of those who inhabit them.

Creating built environments centered on wellness, Robert D. Henry Architects enriches lives through architecture and interior design.

As Seen In ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST January, 2024

For some, a career in architecture is launched with dreams of leaving a signature on the industry; for architect Bob Henry, NCARB, it was set in motion by the kindness of a high school English teacher.

“Ethel Chaney spent weekends bringing students to places she thought would be instrumental in their life,” recalls Henry. “She took me to Chicago to tour the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. The moment I saw his studio, I knew I wanted to be an architect.”

Moved by the humanist sensibilities and use of scale in Wright’s work, Henry founded his internationally renowned firm Robert D. Henry Architects (RDH-A) in 1990 with a vision of creating built environments that engage all five senses while enhancing homeowners’ health.

“I want to improve their health and bring joy to our clients,” he explains. “We spend 85% of our day inside our home and built environments: sleeping, eating, entertaining, and working. Therefore, it’s important that our buildings are healthy.”

Escape to New York

Influenced by 30-plus years of work in the wellness and spa industries, Henry transformed a New York City penthouse for client Barbara Littman into an oasis of calm among skyscrapers by reducing noise pollution through an additional layer of glass, adding an independent HEPA air filtration system, and alleviating his client’s sleep apnea with motorized blackout shades.

“We are concept-design focused, meaning that we spend a lot of time brainstorming and sketching with clients to learn what will make an impactful difference in their quality of life,” says Henry.

Everything in Littman’s apartment revolves around the concept of “entry, path, and goal.” A walkway from the entrance to a sculptural staircase—in front of a vibrant, Van Gogh-yellow wall that pops with the brilliance of daylight, reinforcing the client’s sunny attitude—leads to the rooftop terrace overlooking the city.

“There’s a duality to the home: It’s bold and powerful, reaching for the sky, but it’s also a personal, nurturing cocoon that speaks directly to her health. It’s a place for Barbara to escape and sketch, read, and relax away from her responsibilities and family, though her husband might be able to visit if he makes an appointment,”
Henry laughs.

littman-penthouse-project-new-york-09Located among skyscrapers, this penthouse is a love letter to Manhattan while remaining grounded in the client’s desire for an escape.

Leading With Compassion

The encouragement Henry received from his teacher is now passed on to others as the architect has taken on roles teaching and collaborating with young people in the industry with genuine enthusiasm.

“My work is an extension of the endearment that Ethel provided me early on,” says Henry. “When teaching, I try to get inside each student’s head to understand their ideas and help them develop a voice. I watch the lightbulb go off in their brain and provide them with the architectural vocabulary to describe it.”

Giving young designers the space to voice ideas without fear, Henry creates professional environments not driven by ego, but by solutions within the studio. In this collaboration, young designers learn how to improve their craft while discovering profound talents that may have gone unrecognized.

“I’m excited when young people and clients work with us and share their ideas collaboratively. If their idea is the best one during our dialogue, we’ll go with it,” says Henry. “It’s not about my answer; it’s about finding the best solution together.”

littman-bedroomThe bedroom addresses the client’s sleep apnea through blackout shades, a HEPA air filtration system, and interior panes of glass to reduce noise pollution.

Our Holistic Approach to Authentic Wellness Design:

In the realm of wellness design, the overall concept of “wellness” has transcended the mere provision of spa services and fitness facilities. Today, wellness seekers are drawn to transformative experiences that encompass a holistic approach to well-being.

Instead of focusing solely on physical aspects, modern wellness consumers seek an integration of mind, body, and soul during their experience. The authentic wellness design in our projects is reflected in that methodology and caters to this demand, offering seekers an opportunity to rejuvenate and reconnect with themselves on a deeper level.

To achieve a holistic approach, wellness-focused properties have shifted their paradigms. They have transitioned from being mere service providers to becoming facilitators of wellness journeys.

By addressing various facets of wellness, we can create spaces where guests can escape the pressures of their daily lives and immerse themselves in transformative experiences. Such attention to personalization empowers guests to focus on specific areas they wish to enhance, leading to more profound and meaningful outcomes.

Nature Connection in Authentic Wellness Design:

Amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life, many wellness seekers crave a deeper connection with nature to find solace and balance. Authentic wellness design must embrace the biophilic approach, which integrates natural elements into the built environment. Whether it’s lush greenery, flowing water features, or ample natural light, these elements evoke a sense of tranquility and harmony with the surroundings.

Biophilic design principles go beyond aesthetics; they aim to improve guests’ well-being by reducing stress levels, enhancing cognitive function, and promoting relaxation.

Just minutes from the bustle of Manhattan and Brooklyn via ferry, QC NY is a 74,000 sq ft Italian day resort and spa on Governors Island. RDH Architects collaborated with the QC Terme’s Design Team to debut the brand’s signature “wellness experience” in the US.

The team was inspired to re-purpose three historic McKim, Mead, and White army barrack buildings dating from the 1900s into a ‘wellness campus.’ We integrated QC Terme’s signature hydrotherapy pools within the property’s landscape to deliver a four-season/year-round therapeutic aqua-journey with unprecedented views of the Manhattan skyline. The day resort is a classic European spa with extensive offerings, from taking the “healing waters” within exotic thermal pools to complimentary heat treatments, steams, and saunas. Clients traverse various pools of hot and cold water with a 90-degree temperature differential that boosts your immune system and invigorates your body and soul. Every type of massage and body treatment is on their menu of services.

The idea of public bathhouses where people could meet and greet is not new. Public baths go back to the ancient Greeks, when people did not have access to private bathing. The public baths became social meeting places, teeming with local news, gossip, rumours, and political intrigue.

The resurgence of urban bathhouses, a traditional wellness experience of communal bathing, is new again! With the growth of social media and the isolating effects of the recent pandemic, a social desire has been re-born to socialize in person vs. online. Family and friends gather in pools, steam rooms, and communal saunas as a “wellness sanctuary” on Governors Island.

Healing Retreat – Airem’s – Transformative Rituals 19 Sep 2021, 1:19 am

Airem Wellness Retreat

Our team is fortunate to be working in the “wellness design” business!

After an intense summer, our group needed to re-charge, so we decided to test-drive our latest project, Airem-Modern Beauty Rituals in Syosset, NY designed for Dr. Eunice Park, a celebrated plastic surgeon.

We spoke with Juliet Cavallaro — experience coordinator — who suggested beginning with a collective “tea ceremony” and then breaking-off for individual customized treatments.

Half of our team hadn’t seen Airem and they were delighted by the window box façade, showcasing the sculptural check-in desk & beauty bar beyond.

The tea ritual takes place in a dedicated room where we were introduced to Tea Master — Mina Lee; who explained the 5-millenium year-old history of Chinese tea and carefully paired uniquely blended teas with important questions for our team: what are you most grateful for in the studio?

A sense of family flashed into my mind as we spend 40+ hours a week together so I am personally thankful for our team’s collaborative spiritedness devoid of ego. Others followed with our mutual support for one another and having each other’s back, an openness to change, and maintaining a sense of calm with flexibility, allowing us to navigate these volatile times.

Our nurturing guide asked us to savor the tea and inhale its pungent aroma of caramel and marigold with each sip. We digested her deep questions along with the differing teas moving from a delicate Sejak green tea to a luscious Summer Wild Persimmon leaf. Our minds were slowing down as time and space became blurred. We made eye contact during our responses and our deep listening enriched our appreciation for each other.

Healing Retreat

The Revive Skin Fusion Facials, which followed enhanced our relaxed state and brightened our complexion. Dr. Park’s team allowed us to soak-in the experience and we were slow to return to our previous harried bodies and over-animated minds. I was reminded how Oprah would take her executive team to a spa, to deepen their relationships.

We departed with such a peacefulness and decided that we would make this an annual healing retreat.

Image of RDH Team with Dr. Park

Thank-you team “Airem”…we not only look 5-years younger, we feel much brighter and are eager to design for a better future.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn 9 Jun 2021, 9:11 pm

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Beautiful Magnolia Tree of Hope by Robert D. Henry Architects NYC.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

A majestic magnolia tree anchors the corner of our property, which is located between a hospital and a local subway station, where hundreds pass daily. We invited our community to write a message, their dreams, wishes, or a prayer on a strand of ribbon, then tie that message to the tree and let the birds deliver their message to the Cosmos and Heaven.

A single tree transformed thousands of lives in our Brooklyn Community – HOW? – It provided hope and healing during the global pandemic. This video captures that experience:

Dedicated to Chloe Henry and her friends.
