SARIA: dedicated to water

On the occasion of World Water Day on March 22, SARIA is drawing attention to its collective efforts to conserve water resources.

Since two-thirds of the animal raw materials that most SARIA business units deal with on a daily basis consist of water, SARIA is in the unique position of not only consuming water but also generating it itself. In 2023, the group produced a total of 2,132,000 m³ of water. This is equivalent to more than 10 million full bathtubs. This water is extracted from the raw material by evaporation during the production process and treated for further use.

For example, at the SecAnim production sites in France and Spain, 60% of water consumption in 2022 was already covered by reused water extracted from the collected animal raw material. At the SecAnim plants in Térmens and Segovia (Spain), wastewater undergoes a four-stage recycling process. The water is first physically cleaned by chemical treatment, before the water quality is improved by biological treatment, an extremely thorough filtration process and subsequent osmosis to a level of purity that allows the water to be returned to the natural water cycle. In 2022, SecAnim reprocessed almost 200 million liters in France and Spain. In Spain, the amount of purified water discharged now even exceeds the amount of water withdrawn at a ratio of 2:1.

Since a large amount of drinking water is needed in food production, the possibilities for water recycling in this segment are rather limited for the SARIA business units. Nevertheless, ambitious sustainability targets are also being pursued in this segment. Devro, the specialist in collagen-based sausage casings and coatings, has set itself the goal of reducing its own freshwater consumption by 20% by 2025 and 50% by 2050, taking 2020 as the baseline year. Bioiberica, which focuses on the production of biological active ingredients and substances for humans, animals and plants, has reused around 21% of its own wastewater since 2006 and is working towards increasing this share to as much as 50% in the coming years.

Water recycling is a major issue within the Group. Many companies have installed their own wastewater treatment plants to relieve the pressure on municipal water treatment systems. Across the Group, more than 60% of wastewater is treated internally.

Water is a scarce but renewable resource. SARIA recognizes its responsibility to protect water resources for the future.

HQ opens carport with solar panels

SARIA celebrates the opening of its new solar carport at its headquarters in Selm. Since May, a carport for 60 parking spaces has been built for employees on the southern side of the building. A photovoltaic system on the roof of the carport will generate an average of 160,000 kWh of electricity per year. Mario Löhr, Administrator of the district of Unna, and Thomas Orlowski, Mayor of the city of Selm, have been invited to the official opening ceremony. Since the RETHMANN Group is also headquartered at the site, Norbert Rethmann, Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the group, has also come to the official opening together with other family members.

After eight months of construction, the new carport is now open for the more than 400 employees at the site to park and charge their electric cars. With the construction of the solar park, SARIA is setting an important example for sustainable energy solutions.
SARIA Executive Board member Franz-Bernhard Thier expressed his thanks to the relevant authorities and service providers for their efficient and effective support. Explaining the thinking behind the construction project, he said, “alternative energy solutions have always been an essential aspect of corporate culture at SARIA. Entire divisions of our group have specialized in the production of renewable energies from organic waste. The use of photovoltaic systems to supply electricity to our sites is another aspect of our contribution to climate protection and energy system transformation locally.”

SARIA‘s dedication to solar energy 22 Jul 2024, 2:49 pm

SARIA‘s dedication to solar energy

The importance of sustainability and renewable energies has always been an essential aspect of SARIA’s entrepreneurial culture. Entire business units of the Group have specialized in the production of renewable energy from organic residues. ReFood, for example, generates green energy from food leftovers in its own biogas plants, while ecoMotion, as a pioneer in European biodiesel production, will also produce sustainable aviation fuel from animal fats and used cooking oils at the TotalEnergies site in Grandpuits (France) from 2025.

In order to supply the company sites with sustainable energy in addition to that generated from the manufacturing processes themselves, investments have also been made in photovoltaic installations worldwide in recent years. The latest solar project started in May at SARIA’s headquarters in Selm (Germany). A new carport for 60 parking spaces is currently being built here. As part of the project, a photovoltaic system is being installed on the roof, which will produce an average of 160,000 kWh of electricity per year and achieve a peak output of 170 kWp. Each of the 60 parking spaces will also be equipped with a power source via charging points so that electric cars can be conveniently charged on site in the future. The construction project is expected to be completed in October 2024.

A look at the sites around the world shows that this initiative to use solar power as a renewable energy source is being actively promoted in all of the SARIA Group’s entities.

At our Devro site in Nantong (China), a photovoltaic system with a peak output of 1,020 kWp was put into operation. In 2023, it produced almost 2,000 kWh of solar power, covering 9% of the site’s total electricity consumption. Bioiberica aims to generate 24,000 kWh of solar energy itself with its own photovoltaic installations in 2024. Almost 600 m² of photovoltaic panels have already been installed at the ecoMotion site in Montmeló (Spain). The fermentation residue storage tank at the ReFood site in Les Herbiers (France) has even been covered with 1800 m² of solar cells – an area the size of an ice hockey field – since it was built in 2009. At Van Hessen, one of the company’s largest sustainability projects in 2022 was the installation of solar cells at the headquarters in Nieuwerkerk aan den Ijssel (Netherlands). The roofs of the site were equipped with a total of 1,262 panels. These can produce almost 500,000 kWh of solar energy, which is enough to supply over 2,850 desktop workstations with electricity for an entire year.

All Group-wide investments in sustainable energy management are an expression of our joint efforts to consistently pursue our own corporate purpose: Together towards a sustainable world and a healthier living.

The European Fat Processors and Renderers Association (EFPRA) is an umbrella organization that represents the broad base of European processors of animal by-products. The national rendering associations throughout Europe organize themselves in EFPRA to pool their interests at European level and thus form a common voice within the EU. All members share the goal of continuously improving the safety, health and sustainability of European food production through the efficient processing of animal fats and other by-products. As an international company, SARIA is directly involved in EFPRA’s work via several national associations.

Dr. Robert Figgener, who has held a management position at SARIA for 17 years, represents the interests of the SARIA Group in the areas of biofuels, animal by-products and animal fats through participation in various trade associations and industry networks. With his expertise and many years of industry knowledge, he not only successfully represents SARIA’s business activities in the various political associations but is also a committed ambassador for cross-industry networking and cross-company collaboration. He has been Vice President of EFPRA since 2018.

Dr. Robert Figgener about his election: “I am very honored to have been elected and I am very much looking forward to serving our industry for the next years! The challenges our industry is facing in Europe are not getting any less. Regulatory requirements in the course of the energy transition, consolidation pressure in the meat industry and legal hurdles in the use and processing of animal by-products and the export of safe animal feed components are just a few examples that we need to tackle collectively. As a truly committed industry, we need to work even more closely together to shape a sustainable future for everyone, together with politicians and society.”
