This is the month when we start seeing the big Mahi show up of Key Biscayne and Miami Beach 6 Aug 2020, 11:35 am
This summertime fishing can be very rewarding. We are seeing a lot of big patches of grass out there in the Gulfstream which makes for great fishing. As the winds calm sown we use the Grasshopper technique. What is meant by this is that we simply find the big patches of grass and navigate the boat towards them. The big patches are mini ecosystems that can hold lots forage fish that the Mahi feed on. Where there is food you will find the fish. Once we get to the patch we will look in to the water and look for the mahi. If they are not out hunting there other prey they will be home under the patch. We can cast a bait to see if they are home. If they take the bait it is game on. they can be 5 pounders all the way up to 20 and more. sometimes we see schools of 100 fish but they are usually in the 5 to 6 pound range. The bigger ones are less numerous but they can put up a great fight.
And talk about a great photo opportunity. These colorful fish a beautiful. Catching one will make you say wow with their brilliant yellows greens, and sometimes blue and white. It is a great way to make memories
These patches can be found anywhere for 4 miles out to 20 mile out from Key Biscayne or Miami Beach. It can be very exciting and can produce a lot of tasty fish to eat. For many it is an important part of the summer regimen. It is a good way to stock up the freezer with tasty fish. And it is so much fun that if you give it a shot you will make it a regular charter in season.

Summertime Mahi fishing has been Steady 1 Jul 2019, 7:23 pm
Summertime Mahi-Mahi fishing has been steady as can be on our charters. Always a crowd pleaser, Mahi-Mahi are also known by Dorado and Dolphin. Our charters have been getting some Mahis on a pretty consistent basis but they are typically on birds. That is why on our charters we are constantly using binoculars to scan for birds. If we find the birds that are exhibiting feeding behavior, the fish will be right under them or in the area. As is typical when fishing for Mahi, we leave a few hooked fish in the water to act as decoys. By doing this the school will remain in the area and we can catch many more.
Alth0ugh there have many fish around, not all are keeper size of 20 inches. We have kept a lot of keepers but expect to release a bunch of fish. This is sometimes disheartening but it is a great sign as these fish will grow rapidly and reproduce for next year. They are still fun to catch also.
When we catch fish that may seem borderline we take great care when measuring them so as not to hurt the fish. If we see the fish is in good shape we can take a quick picture before the release. We ask that you do not try to sneak any past the First Mate as we can get a fine form the Fish and Wildlife Officers. Just call the First Mate over and he will be happy to help you measure him.
Oh and not all fish are small. The Top Gun II recently won the biggest fish category in the Florida International University Tournament with a 31 pound Bull Dolphinfish.
If you would like to book a trip on the Top Gun or Top Gun II give us a call at 305-361-8110 or book it online at www.topgunmiami.com/book-fishing-charter.

Some Mahi Are Showing Up 4 Apr 2019, 3:11 am
Our Miami fishing charter boats have been busy. Although it has been an interesting year as the conditions have not been ideal. Fishing has been spotty but we have had some good days on Sailfish when the conditions have improved and we have stuck it out. Sailfish are either not around or they have been spread out in different depths. The Mahi are starting to show up so it is a welcome addition to the mix of pelagic species. We have had to troll for them but we have caught a bunch and left them biting on some occasions. We have fished for and caught a few bigger King mackerel on cloudy days.

Fishing in Miami is all about the Bait (usually) 13 Nov 2017, 5:25 am
Fishing In Miami is excellent. We usually start our fishing trips in Miami by catching bait. It is primarily a live bait fishery because of two reasons. It is the most effective technique for catching fish of all sorts and we have more bait available here than in any other location on the eastern seaboard. It is, quite frankly, the Live Bait Fishing Capital of the World.
At least for the winter and spring months the fishing here is done in very close proximity to the beach in a very small area. We are usually fish 3 miles off the beach but we typically don’t fish more than four miles off the beach. We do however have at least 30 miles of coastline to fish so our options are great.
If you have never fished live bait the way we do in South Florida, then you are in for a real treat as the action can be fantastic. Find more information on our Charter Information page.

Interesting fishing charters with Sailfish and Dolphin 17 Nov 2015, 4:14 pm
It was a great Octoberoff Miami with the Mahi and Sailfish migrating past our shores pretty close. Although the conditions dictate what we catch, it has been pretty easy to target the desired fish. Higher winds and blue water with current have been the deciding factor on where we fish. Some days the fishng off Miami has been better in the Green water when the bait such as flying fish have been pushed up into the shore. Lots of kings have showed up to keep the action going. This should continue in to November and get better with each passing cold.

The Legacy of Fishing in Miami, FL 20 Jul 2015, 1:09 pm
Fishing in Miami has been popular for decades. Sailfish, Kingfish, Sharks, Wahoo, Dolphinfish, Cobia, Snapper and Grouper make a showing very close to shore. Aside from being a city which offers something for everyone, Miami is very accessible to the average traveler making it the ultimate fishing destination.
Miami has emerged as a culturally diverse major metropolitan city in the U.S, with Miami International Airport bringing in visitors from all over the world. Visitors often choose Miami as their final destination, or as a stop to either a cruise departure from our famous PortMiami, or perhaps on the way to Disney World. Either way it is always worth a day trip or a few days layover – and what better way to spend that time than on the water catching one of the great species you can find just offshore. There are few coastal destinations in the world that offer Trolling, Swordfishing and Kite Fishing less than 10 miles from the beach.
Trolling, or pulling artificial lures and dead rigged baits to cover a wide area, is synonymous with Deep Sea fishing. It is the fishing technique most employed throughout the world. It is very effective for finding fish in a wide area. And we do employ this technique here in Miami primarily in the summer months. We mainly catch Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna, and plenty of Mahi Mahi.
The mahi or the Dolphinfish as it is locally known is a beautiful fish that puts on a great show on light tackle. They are very acrobatic. Trolling lets us cover a huge area so we can locate the schools of mahi. After locating the fish we typically switch to 20-pound test spinning gear. As these are schooling fish the schools can number in the hundreds. Not only are they lots of fun to catch but very good eating.
Miami is also a world-class area to go Swordfishing. The techniques vary based on what time of day the species is being targeted. For daytime Sword fishing, extremely heavy weights are used to send the baits down over 1800 ft where the swordfish typically are during the day. For nighttime Swordfishing, baits are drifted closer to the surface over the swordfish grounds. Swordfish in the area range from 75 lbs up to 600 lbs or more and are an exciting catch and a delicious fish to take home for the table! It is truly Big Game Fishing and Oh so exciting to do battle with on of these gladiators of the sea. Make sure you bring your A-game as the battle can be intense.
Some techniques are unique to the Miami area such as Kite Fishing. The nice thing about Kite fishing is that you do not need to be far offshore. We can employ this technique jut 3 miles off the beach. The primary target is usually the sailfish. But kite fishing catches every species known to man. With this technique two special kites are flown and three live baits are dangled from each of these kites. This allows the baits to cover a larger area and it makes for a perfect presentation since the target species does not see the tackle in the water. This sometimes puts the bite in range of the boat and it makes for an exciting hook up. If a fish sees the bait it will be difficult for him not to eat it. Many of the fish are very acrobatic and put on a great show by jumping out of the water and showing as you fight them.
Fishing is a popular pastime in South Florida due to our mostly calm waters and great fishing throughout the year. Due to our location and close proximity to the Gulfstream, our Deep Sea fishing grounds are located just 3 miles offshore, compared to other places in the country where one must travel 20, 30 or more miles to get to the fishing grounds. Fishing in Miami is a sport that can be enjoyed by all. It is a perfect way to spend a Family day, a day with friends, an employee team building experience, a bachelor party, or an anniversary. But one thing is for sure; no excuse is necessary to have a great fishing day on the water in Miami with all the possibilities available..

Sailfish fishing off Miami and Miami Beach is Hot 2 Dec 2014, 3:01 am
The cold temperatures brought by the cold front has made the sailfish fishing red hot. We have caught multiple Sailfish on our charters right out front. Although it has been sporty we have not had to venture too far. The sailfish have started to migrate in big numbers and we intercept them right offshore. Sailfish are great fighting fish and our charter anglers love to catch them. We have also caught Mahi-Mahi close to shore. If deep sea or offshore fishing is what you like now is a great time to go.
Here is Captain Nel in the tower trying to stay warm and looking for the fish on a particularly cold morning off Miami.

Resident Sailfish are all over the Reef line off of Key Biscayne. 19 Nov 2014, 4:33 pm
With the abundant bait on and right off the reef it is only natural that the predators would be feeding on them. The most prevalent now being the Sailfish and Mahi-Mahi. Although we have been faced with green water, Sailfish and mahi-mahi have been attacking the Ballyhoo and flying fish. The old adage that the best place to fish is where the bait is very applicable this time of year.
We have been catching multiple sails and seeing more moving quickly after the bait on our charters. We can usually position the boat so that the fishing see our bait or we can pitch a bait out to them.
The dolphin have been moving at lightning speed chasing the Flying fish and this sometimes makes it difficult for them to see our kite baits or to cast a bait to them. Never the less we have been getting quite a few.
The current cold front should bring more sailfish past our shores.

Sailfish are being caught with the first cold fronts 6 Nov 2014, 3:30 am
Sailfishing off Miami Beach can be spectacular. Sailfish have begun showing up off the coast of Miami Beach. The cold fronts that cool off our South Florida weather have begun to pass through this year. This is a signal to the sailfish that they must start there migration from the deep ocean water up north. Although it can get rather cold by South Florida standards the fishing for Sailfish really heats up. Luckily for us the migration pattern is right off our coast. We catch these sailfish just three miles off the beach in 100 to 300 feet of water. The most productive method it the use of SFE Fishing Kites and live baits.
For those that would like to catch edible fish the Mahi are continuing to show up and provide good action. November has been a great month the last couple of years for these great game Fish.
