Antique maps and prints make thoughtful, unusual and individual gifts that show how well you know the recipient. A well chosen engraving or chart of something in which you have a mutual interest can help to strengthen your bond with that special person. Why not buy your friend, partner or relative a map or print of somewhere, someone or something that means something special to them (or to the both of you)? For example: A vintage map of somewhere they grew up (as it was when they were growing up), orAn antique map of the place that their ancestors emigrated from (at the time that their antecedents upped sticks and left for pastures new) orA view of somewhere they lived, or where they took a fondly-remembered holiday/vacation.A lithographic cartoon of an eminent Victorian ancestor (it's surprising how many people have them!)A print of somewhere that you met each other, or spent time togetherA picture of a favourite animal, bird, or flowerA print of something that relates...‘Le Comté d’Artois et des environs’, showing ‘Pais Reconquis’ (the Pale of Calais) by Visscher (c1680 map). N France & W Belgium. 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
We've recently added this fabulous 1680 map of the county of Artois by Visscher covers part of Picardy, Nord-Pas de Calais & Flanders within northern France and western Belgium. The age of the map is highlighted by the area around Calais being named as “Pais Reconquis”, the name given to it after the Pale of Calais was reconquered from the English in 1558. Calais fell to England after the Battle of Crecy in 1346, and was the last piece of France to be reconquered by the French king after the Hundred Years War, in part because it was so close to England and hence could be easily resupplied. The area covered by the map stretches from Mons in the East to Ghent in the North, and Dieppe and Abbeville in the southwest. Many towns are marked including Calais, Lille, Boulogne, Dunkirk, Cambrai, Tournai & Douai. How were antique prints and maps printed? A brief overview of printing methods 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
The purpose of printing has always been to make multiple exact copies of a given image, map or text. Different methods of printing have been developed over time to achieve this. The main techniques used to print antique maps and prints are as follows: Relief processes (woodblocks, wood cuts, wood engraving) – starting from a flat block or plate, the blank parts of the image are cut way from the plate leaving the design to be printed remaining in relief. The plate is then inked and applied to the paper under pressure to create the printed image or map. Intaglio processes (line engraving – steel engraving or copperplate, etching, aquatint, mezzotint, dry-point) – the design to be printed is cut or engraved into a metal plate using an engraver’s tool, or acid. The flat plate is covered in ink, and the excess ink is wiped away from the unengraved flat surface of the plate, but remains in the engraved grooves. The paper is applied to the inked plate ...A History of Wood Engraving – Chapter 4 Part 3 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

Not many maps change the world. But Dr John Snow’s map of the 1854 cholera outbreak in Soho, London, which showed deaths clustered around a public water pump, changed our understanding of how the disease is transmitted, leading to changes in the design of water & waste infrastructure worldwide and huge improvements in public health. We have two variants of his map in our catalogue. Click here for current stock availability. The editions of the maps that we stock were published by the River Pollution Commission in Hansard in 1874. In addition to his classic original untitled map, we also have a larger scale map which is a development of his original map, which highlights the then-recent changes to the local sewers, and believed locations of plague pits. Snow’s map is regarded as a pioneering example of disease mapping. Dr Snow challenged the then-dominant theory that cholera and other diseases were caused by pollution or a noxious miasma or “bad air”. ...Our weekly newsletter: check out past issues & subscribe for updates on exciting fresh stock 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

John Cary the elder (c. 1754 – 1835) was an English cartographer, engraver, globe maker & publisher. His distinctive map-making style is instantly recognisable. His output included English County maps, sectional maps of England and Wales, the area around London, canal, highway & celestial maps. In the late 18th century, the English road network was becoming ever busier, and Cary’s output fulfilled a growing need for accurate road maps. Although less decorative than some earlier maps, his skills in engraving and craftsmanship produced maps of a high standard, that were also clear and easy for the user to interpret. He became an apprentice to William Palmer in 1770 as an engraver in London, before setting up his own business at 188 Strand in 1783. His business moved to New Norfolk Street, 181 Strand around 1791, and subsequently with his son George to 86 St James’s Street. He soon gained a reputation for his maps a...Just added: Antique folio maps from Vaugondy's "Atlas Universel" of the world (1757) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

We stock maps originally published to accompany and describe J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium which form the backdrop for his Lord of the Rings, Hobbit and other novels. These iconic maps are an important component of his works, and set the standard for later maps in the fantasy genre. The maps, which depict his fictional Middle-earth and other places in his legendarium, helped him with plot development, helps guide the reader through his often complex stories, and contributes to the impression of depth in his writings. Tolkien stated that he began with maps and developed his plots from them, but that he also wanted his maps to be picturesque. Later fantasy writers often include maps in their novels. Tolkien's publisher Allen & Unwin commissioned Pauline Baynes to paint a now iconic map of Middle-earth based on his draft maps and his annotations. The Lord of the Rings contains three maps and over 600 placenames. The maps are a large drawing of the north-w...Antique sea charts of the coasts & ports of south and east Asia by the British Admiralty and East India Company (1840s-1960s) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

This includes a number of scarce, fascinating & detailed parish maps of London, Southwark and Westminster, and prints of many of the city’s most important buildings including palaces, hospitals, Inns of Court and churches, several of which no longer exist. The plates include a print of the old Medieval London Bridge in its final incarnation, just four years before demolition of the houses built thereon began. John Stow was a historian and antiquarian; his “Survey of London” is the work for which he is best known, and is probably the most famous single work ever written about the city. Every morning my walk into work takes me through the beautiful Kensal Green Cemetery, which I can see through my window as I work. This famous Victorian cemetery is immortalised in G.K. Chesterton's "The Rolling English Road" - one of my favourite poems - which ends "For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen, Before we go to Paradise by way of Kensal Green." The cemetery contains the graves of a number of well-known 19th century cartographers, geographers, illustrators and artists. Some considerations to bear in mind when framing your old map or print: Mats/mounts and frames should be selected to protect as well as to enhance the presentation of the map or print. The include maps of Marrakech, Tangier, Rabat, Fez, Essaouira, and the Spanish exclaves of Melilla and Ceuta. What is an antique map/print/ What is a vintage map/print? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
Antique maps and prints were printed, engraved or drawn at least 100 years ago. We consider that vintage maps and prints were printed, engraved or drawn between 50 and 100 years ago. We sell both antique and vintage items, and a small number of items which we printed more recently than 50 years ago where we find them to be particularly interesting. As a rule, antique items are generally more valuable than more recently published vintage items because they are scarcer, however there has been an increase in buyer interest in early/mid 20th century vintage maps in recent years, and certain vintage maps are very collectible. Many vintage maps and prints have the attraction of representing a place as it was during living memory, which can make them interesting and personalised gifts. Maps and prints published before the introduction of steel engraving in about 1815 tend to be scarcer than (and hence more valuable than) later maps, because steel allowed for many more impress...The Second World War at Sea - naval military maps (1950's-1960's) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

No, we do not sell modern reproductions. All of our maps and prints are authentic antique or vintage maps, printed or engraved at the date stated in the product description. If there is some uncertainty about the exact date of publication of a map or print, the publication date is stated to be “circa” or “c.” a given date. However, customers may be interested to know that, since the earliest printed maps, the plates used to print maps (particularly pre-19th century) were frequently updated and re-used by the original cartographer or publisher, and sometimes sold on to other cartographers and publishers. A plate used to make a map may have been used to print a number of different editions, sometimes over the course of many decades after it was first created. It is therefore not uncommon to find later editions of an antique map or print, and indeed variants of a map or print by later cartographers or publishers. We do not make or...Asia & the Middle East - antique folio maps by Philippe Vandermaelen (1827) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

Virtually all items that we offer for sale are prints on paper. “Wood engraved print”, “wood engraving”, “woodcut”, “woodblock”, “steel engraving”, “copperplate” and similar terms refer to the material used for the engraved block or plate from which the print or map was created. Engraved prints and maps are made by engraving a flat metal (steel or copper) plate or wooden block which is then inked and applied to the page under pressure to produce the printed image.Steel engraved prints from “Picturesque America” by William Cullen Bryant 1872-1874 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

Terminology & abbreviations used in antique printmaking 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
Understanding terminology, abbreviations and credits printed on or below a print or map Antique and vintage maps and prints almost invariably have descriptive captions and titles printed prominently below and/or above the image. However the observant collector will have noted and may have wondered about the meaning of the discreet credits printed directly below most prints. Many maps, particularly those printed up to the 18th century, also contain much information about the circumstances in which the map was published. Often consisting of names with obscure abbreviations, in a variety of European languages (especially Latin), we explain the meaning of some of these in our glossary below. Meaning of the position of names at the bottom of an image Conventionally, if names are printed below the image without any further terms indicative of their role in creating the work, a name printed on the left indicates the artist of the original work while that printed on the r...Can you send me a scan of the whole print/map including the margins? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

We do not normally send full resolution scans upon request, but we may do so or may offer to sell such a scan upon request. Pennants, 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
We have just acquired a set of these very decorative and colourful lithographic prints by George Hounsell depicting the flags and marine signals of all nations (1873). The prints cover imperial flags, royal standards, maritime flags and pennants, naval signals, and yacht clubs burgees. The series depicts the important flags of all of the great 19th century powers and maritime nations. Hounsell Brothers were 19th century flag manufacturers and suppliers to the British Admiralty, and the prints were produced as a reference source. These vibrant prints would look great on the wall of a boat owner or sailor, someone who lives by the sea, and those with an interest in vexillology or 19th century history.Where did you get the print/map from? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
The provenance of each item is stated in the product listing.Antique steel engraved prints by WH Bartlett from “American Scenery” & “Canadian Scenery” (1840-1842) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
We have a good range of fine steel-engraved prints of the north eastern United States and Canada, from drawings by William Henry Bartlett. They were published within “American Scenery” and “Canadian Scenery” in 1840 and 1842 respectively. The prints include views within the US states of Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia & West Virginia and Washington DC.Is the date of publication printed on the item? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
The date of publication is sometimes printed on an old map or print; this was more frequently the case for older (18th century or earlier) and larger folio maps. However, most of our stock of old maps and prints does not have the publication date printed on it; if this is important to you, please ask before purchasing. Items extracted from periodicals often have the exact date of publication printed at the top or bottom of each page; they can often otherwise be closely dated by reference to information on births, marriages, deaths or other news events printed in text elsewhere on the page. Individually published maps (ie maps published as separate sheets) often have their publication dates printed on them, however maps and prints which were originally published within books or atlases frequently do not have the publication date printed on each sheet.Steel engraved prints sometimes have the year of publication printed...Charles Booth London Poverty Maps (1902) – back in stock 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
We’ve just acquired another set of Charles Booth’s Poverty Maps of London, from the third (1902) series. These sought-after maps, which show relative levels of wealth across late-Victorian London, have featured in a number of BBC TV documentaries in recent years. Booth was a philanthropist and social reformer. His well-researched maps showed that abject poverty in the city was more widespread than believed. He popularised the concept of the “poverty line”, and his work contributed to the introduction of the state pension in Britain. The streets on the maps are colour-coded according to average income levels: black – “lowest class”; dark blue – “very poor”; light blue – “moderate poverty”; purple – “poverty & comfort (mixed); pink – “fairly comfortable”; red – “well-to-do” and yellow – “wealthy”.Will I receive a certificate of authenticity? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

We also have similar counties maps from the same series of Scotland, Wales and Ireland. How do I verify that my print/map is authentic? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
Most items that we offer for sale can be authenticated by reference to their physical characteristics. Different printing methods produce prints with differing physical characteristics. It is not possible to replicate all these physical characteristics using modern planographic printing methods.Engraving was the most common printing method in 19th century books and newspapers. Engravings are very labour-intensive to produce, and this printing method was largely replaced as the main method of commercial printing by offset lithography within a decade or so of the invention of the latter around 1890. Engraved prints bear characteristic features of engraving which cannot be replicated with modern planographic printing or copying methods. A wood engraved print is created from a wooden block which is carved or engraved before being inked and applied to a page under pressure. The pressure produces small ridges on the page, and the act of the pressure causes the ink to try...Views of British towns, cities & monuments from Burlington's "Modern Universal British Traveller" (1779) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

All items offered for sale are original printed items on paper, published at the date stated in the listing, and are not modern copies. The term “Original” when applied to printmaking means that the print or map was published at the first or original date of publication and is not a later copy. “Original” does not imply that the item is unique. The maps and prints that we sell are almost entirely created by printing; by their nature, more than one copy of these items was made (and as far as we know, is likely still to exist). Manuscript (hand drawn) maps, paintings and drawings are usually unique; by their nature these are scarce and frequently unique. We may occasionally offer manuscript maps for sale, while some antique printed maps (particularly sea charts or other navigational maps) have sometimes been annotated by hand at some point. We do not deal in drawings or paintings.Geological maps of the British Isles and English counties by Stanford & Reynolds (1864-1913) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

We've just catalogued a collection of folding maps published by London Transport between the 1940s and 1970s showing bus, trolleybus and tram networks, and transport access maps issued for the London Olympic Games of 1948, the Festival of Britain in 1951, and Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953. Included are several decorative Green line coach and country bus maps. The maps of the city's trolleybus and tram networks (1946-1950) by Fred Elston and Hale are a particular curiosity; later maps combined trolleybus and tram routes on the single maps with (diesel) bus route maps, and by 1962 London's trolleybus and tram networks had both ceased to exist.Trams operated in London between 1860 and 1952. By 1914 the London tram network was the largest in Europe; however they were later increasingly seen as inflexible and expensive to operate and maintain, and London's trams were all replaced by diesel buses and trolleybuses by 1952. For help or advice, please call +44-(0)208-960-3476 or email info@antiquemapsandprints.com - Richard, Joanne & the team at Antiqua Print GalleryHow do we determine the publication date of antique maps? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
Some customers like to see a date printed on a map, and we’re often asked how we know when a particular map was published if that is not the case. We’re always happy to provide a certificate of authenticity for any maps purchased, detailing the provenance of the map and our opinion of its publication date, and to let you know how we dated the map or print. While older and individually published maps frequently do have a date printed on them, many 19th century and later atlases and books do not state the publication date on each individual map therein. Even where a date is printed on the map, this may be the date or year when the plate was originally engraved – it does not preclude the map having actually been printed later than that, if the publisher did not update the date stated in the plate or block at the time of printing a later edition. If a map has been extracted directly from an atlas, dating is usually straightforward as the publication date of the atlas...French wine regions poster maps by Rémy Hétreau (1954) 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
We're very excited to offer a series of exuberant 1950s poster maps "Les Vignobles de France" - the wine regions of France - by the graphic artist and painter Rémy Hétreau. He was commissioned by the Comité National de Propagande en Faveur du Vin, a French government agency tasked with promoting the nation's wines and wine tourism. His highly decorative works display a joyful mid-century aesthetic; art critic René Barjavel said of him "In the world around him, it is always springtime. He has a blossoming tree in his heart"; a comment evident in these wonderful posters. View them all here. If you have any questions, please ask - we're always happy to help. Call us on +44-(0)208-960-3476 or email info@antiquemapsandprints.com - Richard, Joanne & the team at Antiqua Print GalleryWhat is an “original” antique map? How can there be more than one original? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
From time to time a customer asks how a map can be an “original” when we have more than one in stock, or when we have another map which is the same or similar, or when he or she has seen the same map somewhere else. Printed maps are created from a single manuscript (literally, hand drawn) map from which the engraver made the block or plate. It could be argued that only the unique manuscript map is the “original”; with a painting, this is clearly true, but in the map trade it has always been the case that any impression made from a particular woodblock, copper plate or steel plate has been regarded as an “original” example of the map, and until that plate or block was destroyed “originals” could be printed from it. That of course means that many “original” examples may exist, although each block or plate has a limited life due to its physical limitations, and only a finite number of prints can be made from it. The number of imp...Where can I see old maps? A bucket list for the serious antique map tourist 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
For the traveller with a dedicated interest in old maps, we include a list below of some of the most significant map libraries and collections worldwide. Antique map enthusiast and map tourists can always see old maps in dealers’ showrooms (you are always welcome to come and visit us in London by appointment), but many of the collections containing the scarcest maps can only be found in the older University libraries and in national and large public libraries. Often an appointment may be required and access to some of these institutions may be restricted to those with a serious academic, research or professional purpose or justification. The list below is by no means complete. Online Many universities and museums have made all or part of their collections available to view online. In addition, the David Rumsey collection has over 67,000 digitised maps online which can be viewed at www.davidrumsey.com United Kingdom The British Cartographic Soci...Can I come to view a print or map at your premises? 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

We do not provide framing or mounting services, but we may be able to recommend a framer depending on your location - please feel free to contact us. We always recommend using a professional framer, but if you are feeling creative and dextrous, it is quite possible to cut the mount to size yourself, if you have the right equipment. Whether using a professional framer or not, it is usually a more cost effective option to purchase a standard sized frame and have the mount cut to size for your print or map, rather than to have a frame custom made. Whether you intend to mount and frame your print or map yourself, or get this done by a professional framing shop, be sure to ask for archive quality, acid-free mounting (matting) board to prevent the risk of damage to the paper of your map or print which can accrue over a long period of time. The use of non-reflective glass can enhance your picture viewing experience considerably. When framed, try to...A History of Wood Engraving – Chapter 5 Part 3 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

We’ve just listed 180 decorative maps and prints by Nicolas de Fer, from “a la Sphere Royale” (1705). These detailed plans and views depict fortified towns and cities, islands, battles, and military and civil engineering projects. Most of the plans are of cities in European countries including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Malta & the Ukraine. Other plans cover the cities of Quebec, Constantinople (Istanbul) and Batavia (now Jakarta). The maps include the French islands of Île de Ré and Belle-Île-en-Mer. There are three fascinating plans showing the route of the unfinished Canal de l’Eure, Louis XIV’s ruinously expensive vanity project to supply water to the fountains at Versailles. A number of the maps depict sieges, bombardments or military engagements of the then fairly recent Nine Years’ War (1688-97). De Fer was appointed cartographer to Louis, Dauphin of France, and later to both Philip V and Louis XIV, kings of Spain and France re...A History of Wood Engraving – Chapter 4 Part 2 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am

Some of the most fascinating and sought after old maps are those which contain infamous cartographic errors. We highlight below twenty maps containing some of the best known mistakes. These include California shown as an island, the Mountains of Kong in West Africa, a vast inland sea in the American West, Terra Australis – a giant southern continent, the legendary city of El Dorado and mythical island of Atlantis, The Niger river flowing the wrong way, Indochina’s Lake Chiamay, the phantom islands of Lake Superior and in the South Atlantic, Lake Apalachy in the Carolinas, and the source of the Nile wrongly identified. Many of these errors have fascinating stories behind them – for example the “discoveries” of the fictitious Admiral Fonte – invented by a London publisher – which found their way onto a number of important maps. In earlier centuries, mistakes arose from inaccurate surveying, speculative hypothesis, or misi...Maps from “The World-Wide Atlas of Modern Geography”; by J. Scott Keltie; Published by W. & A.K. 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
We’d just added to our inventory a broad selection of maps from J. Scott Keltie’s “The World-Wide Atlas of Modern Geography”. The atlas was published in a number of editions from the early 1890’s through to 1920. We have just added maps from three editions – 1895 (2nd edition), 1900 (5th edition) and 1903 (6th edition), to add to our already extensive range of maps from this atlas and the similar “Victoria Regina” atlas. You can view our current range from all editions of this atlas at the link above. I’ve lived in Marylebone for 25 years, and have long been aware that much of the eastern part of the parish was developed by Edward Harley, Earl of Oxford. My wife and I like to go hiking, and we’ve been lucky enough to walk in some of the more beautiful parts of Great Britain. However, until last weekend I must confess that I’d overlooked the attractions of Dorset. Aside from the number of very charming towns and villages, and the stunning coastal scenery, I was also struck by the number of Dorset place names which had given themselves to Marylebone streets (Dorset Square being the most obvious, but also Weymouth Street and Portland Place). We also recently listed this scarce and fascinating map of the parish of Marylebone in 1833; a number of subsequent street name changes are noted at this link. All of which got me to researching the connection between Marylebone and Dorset, and Marylebone street names in general: The story goes like this: In 1710, Joh...New stock: antique prints of national, maritime, imperial and royal flags, standards, signals & burgees 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
We’ve just substantially broadened our range of antique flag prints with a number of interesting additions. We’ve also brought all our stock of flag prints and lithographs into a single page category so can view them all in one place. Included are many fascinating flags of countries, yacht clubs and other organisations which no longer exist, or whose flags have since been replaced by different designs. Our now extensive inventory covers antique and vintage prints of national, royal, military and imperial flags and standards, yacht and sailing club ensigns, jacks and burgees, and other maritime and marine flags. We stock decorative lithographic flag prints from Hounsell’s “Flags and Signals of All Nations” (1873), “Drawings of the flags in use at the present time, by various nations” by the British Admiralty (1916) and from a later edition of the same publication (BR20, 1958). We also stock plates from Lloyds Yacht Register (1896-1914).Etymology of place names 15 Apr 2025, 12:00 am
