A refresh of the Tilden Arts Center theater at Cape Cod Community College replaces the original 1970s seating with new fixed seating. The new 589 seat layout provides code compliant seat spacing and increased accessibility. Tablet arms allow the College to use the theater for large scale lectures and testing in addition to performances.

Woods Hole Terminal Construction Begins 2 May 2024, 1:22 pm
General contractor Colantonio, Inc. has mobilized to begin construction of the new terminal building and supporting utility building in Woods Hole. These two new buildings will provide modernized, resilient services for this critical port serving Martha’s Vineyard. A new headhouse and renovated lobby is open at the Kendall/MIT station with new signage by BIA.studio. Implementing the major redesign of the MBTA signage system developed by BIA.studio in 2015, the signage upgrades include wayfinding signage, Tactile/Braille signage, and elevator signage.

Campus-wide Building Envelope Study 17 Apr 2024, 8:29 pm
BIA.studio is wrapping up a campus-wide investigation into the condition of the structural and building envelope systems of nine buildings on the Cape Cod Community College campus in West Barnstable, MA. In partnership with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, the study includes existing conditions assessments of the campus’ original 1960s and 1970s buildings – including brick masonry veneer exterior walls, original single pane windows, exterior doors, and membrane roofing – with recommendations for the repair of deteriorated and failed systems and hazardous materials abatement, detailed cost estimates, and a prioritized phasing plan. The recommended first phase of work, which focuses on replacement of roofs to address active leaking and critical structural repairs, will be submitted for funding as a DCAMM-certified study.

A renovation to the Admissions Department within the Anthony Student Service Center at Fitchburg State University transforms a former storage area into a new conference room for 20, and creates three new offices and a dedicated Transfer Center. The Admissions reception area is brightened with new finishes, a new reception desk, and reupholstered reception furniture in the FSU colors of yellow and green.

Leslie Philips Theater Renovation 17 Apr 2024, 8:22 pm
The Leslie Philips Theater within the Fine and Performing Arts Building at Holyoke Community College has reopened following upgrades to the 340 seat theater. BIA.studio completed a DCAMM-certified study to address code and safety issues in the theater, which was built in the early 1970s. Renovations include a new orchestra pit filler, seating, handrails, flooring, and upgrades to the fire alarm system and theater rigging.

UMaine Energy Center (UMEC) 24 Feb 2023, 9:20 pm
BIA.studio, in partnership with Honeywell International and Waldron Engineering, has commenced design for an addition to UMaine’s Central Steam Plant, located on the west side of campus next to the Stillwater River. The new Energy Center will allow UMaine to drastically reduce its use of fossil fuels and support its commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Center will use locally-sourced renewable fuel to provide essential heating service to the Orono campus.

BIA.studio has completed a Comprehensive Master Plan for the Capron Park Zoo within the historic 62-acre Capron Park. The master plan creates a clear and creative road map for the future with a framework of new elements and renovation projects to be undertaken over the next 10-15 years. A new entrance building and lion exhibit are envisioned to support the Zoo’s mission to “excite an interest in the natural world through education, conservation and recreation.”

Ten years after construction of the BIA-designed expansion to the UMass Medical School (UMMS) Power Plant, construction of a new addition is nearing completion. Designed in partnership with Waldron Engineering to accommodate a new chiller and enclose and expand the existing electrical mezzanine, the addition provides new conditioned space within an energy code compliant building envelope that extends the existing power plant’s transparent glass curtainwall system.

BIA.studio has been retained by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) to provide on-call design and planning services to support modernization projects on the waterfront campus, which is located on a peninsula at the west entrance of the Cape Cod Canal. Campus needs include administrative suite renovations, gymnasium upgrades, academic hall expansions, relocation of the Aquaculture Lab, and site improvements.
