The New Orleans Greek Festival that you love is back better than ever!
After two years, the Holy Trinity family is back in full swing! It has been personally exciting to get together face-to-face to create the delectable pastries and other favorite Greek items. And, this year, Holy Trinity will showcase two new added attractions.
In the 19th century, local media, residents, and visitors referred to Holy Trinity as the “Little Greek Church.” In 2022, the festival will present a special free exhibition space, the “Little Museum of the Little Greek Church” to commemorate our founders and the Orthodox Christian pioneers who anchored Eastern Orthodoxy in the Americas in 1864. The museum will present a collection of over 100 religious artifacts, photos and historical documents that the community has safeguarded since its beginning when the church was first established on N. Dorgenois St. This exhibition will inspire reflection, awareness and thoughtfulness. Many of the religious artifacts are imbued with over 150 years of veneration.
Some of the special artifacts to be viewed are Greek and Slavonic Bibles printed in early to mid-1800s in Greece, Venice, Italy, and Russia. One Greek Bible, crafted at the monastery where the revolution for Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire began, will be on display. Two early 19th century icons created in St. Petersburg, Russia were gifted by the Russian Imperial family. There will be more than 50 icons on view, part of a collection that represents the melting pot that is Orthodox Christianity.
Most of the people who came to the Greek Festival know about the dancing, music, celebration, and the roasted lamb. Many attended our cathedral tours which informed visitors on the history of our Orthodox faith and Holy Trinity Church. In addition, the tours were enriched with Byzantine and English Orthodox chanting. We heard how much our visitors really enjoyed the chanting and have increased that segment of the cathedral tours.
