KYOCERA AVX Unveils World-First*1 Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitor (MLCC) Delivering Industry-Highest 47μF Capacitance in 0402-inch Size*2

KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, has successfully developed the world’s first*1 compact, high-capacity multilayer ceramic chip capacitor (MLCC) with an industry-leading capacitance value of 47µF in the 0402-inch size*2 (1.0mm x 0.5mm). Mass production scheduled to start in December 2025.

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is driving a surge in demand for smartphones equipped with generative AI and AI servers. Additionally, as data processing technology becomes more advanced, the number of integrated components is increasing. Consequently, there is a growing need for ultra-compact components that allow for efficient component mounting within limited board space. In the case of MLCCs, which are extensively used in these electronic devices, there is a strong expectation for further miniaturization and increased capacitance. At the same time, there is a demand for high reliability in components used in harsh temperature environments due to heat generation and other factors.

The ‘0402-inch size’*2 MLCC developed by our company is the most widely adopted size for smartphones and wearable devices. Through KYOCERA AVX’s unique material and process technologies, we have achieved further thinning of the dielectric and internal electrodes, successfully expanding the capacitance per unit by approximately 2.1 times compared to our previous product (22μF) of the same size. This contributes significantly to securing the necessary capacitance and reducing the number of components. Moreover, high heat resistance up to +105°C ensures high reliability in harsh temperature environments, such as AI servers.

KYOCERA AVX will continue to advance product development in its electronic components business to meet market needs, contributing to the miniaturization and enhanced functionality of devices such as smartphones and AI servers.

Reducing Board Surface Area and Improving RF Performance by Embedding Ultra Thin Capacitors 18 Feb 2025, 4:23 pm

ABSTRACT
Board space limitations are pushing for smaller components and greater component density while maintaining or improving broadband performance. The industry has tried to accommodate board limitations by embedding components within the board material itself. Even though many passive components are designed to have a minimal part height, traditional capacitors are thicker components, which makes them undesirable for embedded solutions. This study focuses on the Metal Oxide Silicon (MOS) Capacitor technology, and how these capacitors are ideal for embeddable applications, and help improve high-frequency performance.

  • Initial and final voltage
  • Constant current, constant power, or constant resistance modes
  • Power (W)
  • Duration time

Users can identify recommended supercapacitor solutions ranging from single cells and modules to series and parallel combinations of parts and enjoy one-click access to detailed information about the proposed solutions, including physical and electrical characteristics, input values, part number explanations, and even interactive voltage and current vs. time graphs.

KYOCERA AVX supercapacitors, including SCC and SCM Series supercapacitors and supercapacitor modules, provide engineers with a number of practical advantages, such as:

  • Capacitance values extending from 0.47F to 3,000F, depending on the series
  • High pulse power and large energy storage capabilities
  • Very low ESR and low leakage current ratings
  • Reliable performance and long lifetimes when designed-in properly
  • Support for series and parallel configurations capable of achieving custom working voltage and capacitance ratings
  • Faster charge/discharge cycles, better performance over a wider range of rated operating temperatures (-40°C to +65°C at rated voltage or +85°C with appropriate derating), and superior cycle life compared to batteries
  • The ability to extend primary and secondary battery lifetimes by a minimum of 2x on average
  • The option of bent leads, custom wiring, connectors, and solder/weld terminals
  • Rugged designs, including high-reliability, moisture-resistant models and automotive-grade options qualified to AEC-Q200
  • Competitive pricing
  • Favorable lead-times
  • Manufacturing ownership and supply chain confidence
  • Highly experienced engineering and technical support services

These unique characteristics also enable broad application suitability. KYOCERA AVX supercapacitors are ideal for emergency memory and power backup, battery supplement, peak power assist, and pulse power applications in

  • Automation, robotics, and smart metering equipment
  • Engine and motor starters
  • Uninterruptible power supplies
  • Wind turbines
  • Mobile communications (GSM), radio (GPRS), telemetry, wireless alarm, emergency lighting, and hybrid systems

C0G High Voltage MLCC in DCDC and OBC Applications
C0G High Voltage MLCC in DCDC and OBC Applications
Written By: Robert Lu
Abstract:
This white paper discusses the advantages of C0G high voltage MLCCs when compared to film capacitors. Capacitance stability is a crucial element when choosing the right resonant capacitor for resonant circuits. Minimum variations with shifts in temperature, voltage, and frequency fluctuation are desirable. Although film capacitors provide a good option for certain applications, advances in MLCC technology have improved the performance of other capacitor dielectrics. In DC-DC/OBC applications, C0G High Voltage MLCCs can represent a more suitable option when compared to film capacitors, maintaining minimal capacitance variation with temperature and low dissipation factor at high frequencies.

New Revolutionary, Award-Winning Ultra-Wideband LDS Tulip Antenna 8 Oct 2024, 2:26 am

The patented new surface-mount, on-ground, ultra-wideband (UWB) Tulip antenna is a revolutionary new design that leverages laser direct structuring (LDS) technology and delivers unparalleled accuracy in 6.0–8.5GHz UWB applications.
9002305L0-L01K Series

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. (October 7, 2024) – KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, released the innovative new surface-mount, on-ground, ultra-wideband (UWB) LDS Tulip antenna (9002305L0-L01K) for 6.0–8.5GHz applications to market at Embedded World North America today.

While introduced at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany, on April 9, 2024, where an independent judging panel of esteemed electronics specialists and industry thought leaders selected it as the recipient of a 2024 Electronics Specifier Electronics Excellence Award, stock — including samples — was just made available through DigiKey and Mouser.

The novel new UWB LDS Tulip antenna is manufactured using laser direct structuring (LDS) technology. This process allows KYOCERA AVX to create conductive traces on complex 3D structures with unique patterns and develop antennas that deliver numerous advantages, including substantial space and weight savings, unparalleled precision and accuracy, and optimized performance. As a result, the new Tulip antenna functions as both an on-board and on-ground antenna characterized by an omnidirectional radiation pattern with outstanding 360° phase stability, constant group delay, and linear polarization — all of which play a crucial role in signal reconstruction and further improve the accuracy of low-energy, short-range, and high-bandwidth UWB systems.

Its superior group delay and phase distribution characteristics improve the accuracy of the phase difference of arrival (PDoA), which translates into improved system-level services, such as angle of arrival (AoA) and time of flight (ToF), maximizes the precision of device localization in space, and ensures secure communication with said device. Further, given its on-ground capabilities, it can be placed anywhere on a PCB, including the middle of the board and over metal, enabling enhanced design flexibility compared to strictly off-ground antennas, which require ground clearance and, as such, are placed along the perimeters of PCBs.

The UWB LDS Tulip antenna has a small form factor that measures 6.40 x 6.40 x 5.58mm, weighs ~0.1g, and supports SMT pick-and-place assembly. It is also compliant with the latest versions of the RoHS and REACH regulations and optimized for 6.0–8.5GHz UWB applications, such as smart city, mobility, retail, asset tracking, healthcare, fitness, security, handheld, and connectivity operations, including telematics and other Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

“LDS technology allowed us to develop a compact ultra-wideband antenna with a constant phase that delivers unparallelled accuracy in UWB systems and cannot be replicated by traditional stamped metal or flexible printed circuit antennas,” said Carmen Redondo, Director of Global Marketing for Antennas at KYOCERA AVX. “The ability to integrate complex mechanical designs in miniature 3D shapes allows us to optimize antenna size, performance, and emissions in even extremely small and oddly shaped designs, satisfy customer and regulatory specifications more easily, and help customers in various segments of the rapidly expanding smart technology industry improve time-to-market.”

When installed on a 40 x 40mm PCB, the UWB LDS Tulip antenna typically exhibits 2ns maximum group delay, 4.3dBi peak gain, 2W continuous wave (CW) power handling, and 61% average efficiency.

The antenna is also patented and produced in South Korea.

The new 9179-000 Series IDC Splice Connectors are designed to replace traditional crimp- and solder-style splice connectors in a broad range of industrial, lighting, consumer, automotive, and oil and gas applications.
9179-000 Series

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. (September 25, 2024) – KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, released the new 9179-000 Series IDC Splice Connectors, which are packed with features designed to make them an attractive alternative to traditional splicing solutions.

The new 9179-000 Series IDC Splice Connectors utilize insulation displacement contact (IDC) technology, which is more efficient, economical, robust, reliable, and durable than traditional hand-crimp and hand-solder connection technology. IDC connectors don’t require users to strip wires prior to termination and are quick and easy to terminate without any special tooling, which saves time and money. They establish cold-welded, gas-tight connections and have been tested and proven to withstand common levels of shock, vibration, and temperature cycling. The series is also compatible with potting processes, which can further enhance its resistance to shock and vibration — as well as moisture, corrosive agents, and aging — and virtually eliminate the maintenance and repair requirements and costs associated with traditional splice connectors.

Another advantage of the new 9179-000 Series IDC Splice Connectors is flexibility. These connectors have a compact form factor designed to fit in spaces that competing solutions can’t. When terminated, they measure just 8.0 x 7.8 x 7.2mm. They also accept solid and stranded wires, support a mixed combination of wire gauges ranging from 18–24AWG, enables easy in-field installation, and — unlike competing inline-only solutions — allow for wire insertion from one or both sides.

Ideal applications for the new 9179-000 Series IDC Splice Connectors include a broad range of electronic systems and devices in the industrial, lighting, consumer, automotive, and oil and gas industries.

The new KYOCERA AVX 9179-000 Series IDC Splice Connectors are rated for up at 13A per contact, 300VACRMS or the DC equivalent, and operating temperatures extending from -40°C to +125°C. They feature white, UL94 V-0 glass-filled thermoplastic housings with wire entry diameters etched into the top, lead-free, tin-over-nickel-plated phosphor bronze contacts, and housing caps with wire gauge measurements etched into the top and colors that correspond to various combinations of wire gauges.

“We developed the new 9179-000 Series IDC Splice Connectors to help customers in the industrial, lighting, consumer, automotive, and oil and gas industries achieve more flexible, efficient, economical, robust, reliable, and durable splice connections than traditional hand-crimped and hand-soldered splice connectors can provide — especially in environments exposed to hazards including shock, vibration, and temperature cycling,” said Perrin Hardee, Product Marketing Manager, KYOCERA AVX. “Their small form factor, ease of use, robust, high-reliability IDC contacts, unique in-line and same-side design wire insertion design, excellent wire retention strength, high temperature resistance, electrical ratings, and compatibility with potting processes make them well suited for use in a variety of applications in various industries.”

Application of Johnson’s approximation in finite element modeling for electric field-dependent materials 25 Jun 2024, 12:59 pm

ABSTRACT
Johnson’s approximation is implemented in a finite element code to simulate the electric field dependence of a core–shell microstructure material. We show how the microstructure, based here on a 50:50 volume fraction, influences the measured effective permittivity as a function of applied voltage. Using a Johnson’s parameter of β = 1.0 × 1010 Vm5/C3, verified from commercial BaTiO3-based multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), we show how the microstructure and the difference in core and shell conductivities alter the local fields generated and how this influences the voltage dependence of the effective permittivity. Systems that comprise a conductive core-like material surrounded by a resistive shell experience little or modest voltage dependence due to the shell material providing shielding to large electric fields within the cores. Conversely, if the core material is more resistive than the shell material, substantial voltage dependence occurs with simulations showing over a 50% decrease in the effective permittivity. These simulations give improved understanding of voltage dependence and provide a method to help guide the design of future materials for MLCCs with improved performance.

Assessing the Benefits of Tantalum Capacitors in Electronic Detonator Applications
Assessing the Benefits of Tantalum Capacitors in Electronic Detonator Applications
Written By: John Lee
Abstract:

Electronic detonators have revolutionized explosive applications by allowing precise control over detonation timing, increased safety, and improved efficiency. Since capacitors are indispensable in electronic detonators, choosing the right capacitor is crucial for ensuring system robustness. The emergence of Tantalum (MnO2) Capacitors has been a gamechanger. Tantalum capacitors offer excellent electrical characteristics and robust reliability, making them suitable for electronic detonator applications. This whitepaper delves into essential parameters for choosing capacitors, focusing on the benefits of integrating Tantalum capacitors.

Electronic detonators are devices utilized for initiating explosive charges. Unlike conventional fuse-based detonators, electronic detonators offer precise timing, increased safety, and improved performance in various mining, construction, and defense applications. They are designed using intricate electronic circuits that require consistent power delivery to operate effectively. Electronic detonators provide microsecond precision, unlike mechanically or chemically initiated detonators (blasting caps). This enhanced precision leads to better fragmentation, lower ground vibration, and improved safety. The delay time can be programmed into the detonator, offering flexibility for different blasting scenarios. The consistent energy provided by the power source minimizes the chance of misfires. Eliminating external lead wires and offering remote detonation capabilities reduce the risk to personnel.

Card Edge Connectors for Lighting Applications 19 Mar 2024, 1:50 pm

Card Edge Connectors for Lighting Applications
Card Edge Connectors for Lighting Applications
Written By: Raul Saucedo
Abstract:

For more than 50 years, the PCB edge connected circuit card has been a mainstay in both desktop and server computers. The traditional arrangement of backplanes and motherboards with numerous card edge slots allowed for configurability and expansion in a rapidly advancing industry. The natural result was an evolution of edge card connector technology focused on higher contact densities and improved electrical performance to try and maximize speed and throughput.

More recently, card edge connectors have taken on a new role in the world of solid state lighting (SSL) as the LED has become the dominant source of efficient illumination. LED lighting can be split into two broad categories: traditional bulb replacements and variable length strips. The LEDs themselves are often mounted on specialized PCBs designed for heat dissipation (typically aluminum clad). Control and power supply electronics on a traditional fiberglass PCB are mated to the LED section to form the completed luminaire. One of the most economical and reliable methods for mating these two boards turns out to be card edge connectors.

To meet the requirements of this new application space, KYOCERA AVX has developed new lines of edge card connectors with optimized contact solutions specifically tailored for LED lighting PCBs. These contacts use beryllium copper (BeCu) materials and are often stamped and formed to create the final contact geometry. BeCu has proven to be the best contact material on the market in stamped contacts, providing high spring force without yielding to elevated temperatures, a large contact deflection range, substantial insertion force tolerance, and long-term reliability.

The new high-current load dump varistors are an extension of its TransGuard Automotive Series, which has been proven to provide reliable bidirectional overvoltage protection and EMI/RFI attenuation in automotive electronics applications for more than 20 years.

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. (March 4, 2024) – KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, released the new range of load dump varistors as an extension of its trusted TransGuard Automotive Series.

KYOCERA AVX TransGuard Automotive Series varistors are innovative, zinc-oxide-based ceramic semiconductor devices that provide bidirectional overvoltage protection and EMI/RFI attenuation in a single, space-saving SMT package qualified to AEC-Q200 and backed by more than 20 years of proven performance in an array of automotive electronics. Key features include a unique monolithic multilayer construction, nonlinear, bidirectional voltage-current characteristics, high-current and -energy-handling capabilities, multi-strike capabilities, and extremely fast, sub-nanosecond response times. They are also available with glass encapsulation for enhanced resistance against harsh environment hazards including acids, salts, and chlorite flux. Combined, these features enable TransGuard Automotive Series varistors to provide reliable, state-of-the-art circuit protection from voltage transients caused by ESD, induction motor loads, module load dump, and other disruptions, which is increasingly vital as the number of electronic systems deployed in automotive applications continues to grow.

The new TransGuard Automotive Series load dump varistors are characterized by higher peak current ratings than the rest of the series (2,000A), which make them even more effective at providing reliable protection against high-energy automotive load dump transients. Load dump pulses simulate a sudden battery disconnection from the alternator and cause the alternator to generate an overvoltage impulse that can damage sensitive ICs, which are also increasingly common in today’s automotive designs.

TransGuard Automotive Series varistors, including the new load dump varistors, are ideal for use in internal combustion engine, hybrid electric, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, including commercial vehicles, and are especially well suited for use in CAN, LIN, and FLEXRAY modules, sensors, and induction motors. They are compact and lightweight, rated for operating temperatures extending from -55°C to +125°C with no derating, and compliant with JASO D001 1994 and ISO 7637-2-2004 standards for protection against transient surges in the automotive industry. They are also RoHS compliant, lead-free compatible, and free of any other substances of very high concern (SVHCs).

“When compared to similar competing parts, the new TransGuard Automotive Series load dump varistors outperform in energy handling while utilizing a smaller footprint and maintaining all necessary parameters,” said Tyler Lagnese, Product Marketing Manager, KYOCERA AVX. “This allows design engineers to achieve significant performance improvements with the added benefit of space and weight savings, which is especially valuable considering the growing number of electronic systems deployed in automotive applications.”

Written By: Ajay Saini
Abstract:
The term “medical device” covers a broad spectrum of electrical equipment, ranging from small implantable stimulators to room sized MRI machines. This equipment is typically broken down into three classes based on the safety implications of possible failure modes. Class I devices present minimal potential for harm to the user and are often simpler in design. 47% of medical devices fall into this class, and 95% of these are exempt from any special regulatory oversight. Once appreciable safety concerns come into play, the device is elevated to Class II status. Class III devices require the utmost scrutiny and are subject to intense regulatory oversight, putting them into a category of their own when it comes to the suitability of electronic components.

While KYOCERA AVX manufactures other products for use in Class III devices, Class I and II devices, can be designed using traditional electronic supply chain components, as long as a focus is maintained on reliability and environmental compatibility. KYOCERA AVX produces a wide variety of contacts and connectors that are well-suited to Class I and II medical applications, particularly at the PCB level for connecting wires to boards, boards to boards, and battery packs to boards.

KYOCERA AVX Expands 9155-800 Vertical-Mate, 2.0mm-Pitch Battery Connector Series 29 Jan 2024, 2:00 pm

Now available with two to eight positions, the 9155-800 Series battery connectors provide a wider range of signal and current capabilities in addition to error-proof mating and proven performance in harsh industrial, medical, and consumer electronics applications.

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. (January 29, 2024) – KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, expanded its robust and extremely user-friendly 9155-800 Series vertical-mate, 2.0mm-pitch battery connectors with the addition of new seven- and eight-position models to satisfy customer demand for higher signal and current capabilities. These new additions also further expand its 9155 family of battery connectors, which already offered the broadest selection of standard battery connectors on the market.

KYOCERA AVX’s 9155-800 Series vertical-mate, 2.0mm-pitch battery connectors feature a unique contact geometry that deflects cleanly when a module, mating connector, or PCB is vertically pushed into position, enabling full vertical engagement in pluggable modules without the risk of contact damage. Traditional battery connectors require users to engage the contacts before rotating the mating module or PCB into position to reliably prevent contact damage. The 9155-800 Series does not. In fact, users can mate these connectors from any angle without inadvertently damaging the contacts.

The 9155-800 Series vertical-mate, 2.0mm-pitch battery connectors feature an extremely forgiving sweeping beam contact design and an anti-snag feature that reliably protects the contacts from damage during deflection, and when static as well. The series also features ultra-robust and -reliable gold-plated beryllium copper (BeCu) contacts that deliver excellent electrical and mechanical performance for more than 5,000 mating cycles and plastic locating bosses and SMT anchor tabs that maximize the mechanical stability of the connector in high-shock and vibration environments.

Another unique feature of the 9155-800 Series is that it’s compatible with both signal and power circuits. So, the newly expanded range of pin counts, which now extends from two to eight positions, provides users with a broader range of signal and current capabilities.

9155-800 Series vertical-mate, 2.0mm-pitch battery connectors also feature flame-retardant (UL94 V-0) black, glass-filled Nylon 46 insulators, BeCu contacts with either 0.4µm or 0.8µm of selective gold-over-nickel plating (the former of which is suitable for most commercial and industrial applications and the latter of which is suitable for harsh-environment applications), and pure tin tails. They are rated for 125VAC or the DC equivalent; 1.5A or 2A, depending on the number of positions (five to eight and two to four, respectively); and operating temperatures extending from -40°C to +125°C. They are also RoHS compliant and shipped in quantities of 1,000 on 330mm-diameter reels.

Ideal applications for 9155-800 Series vertical-mate, 2.0mm-pitch battery connectors extend throughout the industrial, medical, and consumer electronics markets and include handheld and portable devices that require docking or cradling, such as charging stations, patient monitoring devices, industrial devices with pluggable or programmable modules, and internet equipment with battery backups.

“Traditional battery connectors with right-angle contact geometries and exposed contacts require pluggable modules to be inserted at an angle and then rotated down into position to prevent contact damage. And while that may seem insignificant, the extra step required to successfully mate traditional battery connectors increases the potential for mismating by half,” said Perrin Hardee, Product Marketing Manager at KYOCERA AVX. “Our 9155-800 Series vertical-mate, 2.0mm-pitch battery connectors are engineered to ensure proper mating from any angle and eliminate the possibility of inadvertently damaging the contacts during the process. They’re also compact, electrically flexible, and robust, providing users in the industrial, medical, and consumer electronics markets with a wide range of reliable connectivity solutions for power and signal circuits.”

KYOCERA AVX has been producing battery connectors for more than 25 years, and its 9155 family of battery connectors offers the broadest selection of standard battery connectors available on the market. The family includes a wide variety of robust, horizontal- and vertical-mating connector series ideally suited for board-to-board connections and battery pack integration. Additional features of the 9155 family include ultra-reliable and robust gold-plated BeCu contacts proven to provide high-integrity connections in harsh environments for up to 15,000 mating operations and tape and reel packaging compatible with automated processes. The range can also be customized to suit specific application requirements.

Technical Article: Surface Mount Capacitors for DC-DC Converter Applications 19 Dec 2023, 3:47 pm

Surface Mount Capacitors for DC-DC Converter Applications
Written By: Naotaka Hata
Abstract:
Tantalum, polymer, ceramic, film, and aluminum capacitors each offer a different set of operating and performance characteristics. Choosing the proper capacitor when designing DC-DC converters requires a careful understanding of these differences. High voltage front-end connections to the power source typically rely on aluminum capacitors, while intermediate step-down voltages often look towards the tantalum and ceramic families to take advantage of volumetric efficiency. The final load decoupling and bypass capacitors are generally found in the ceramic and film families.

Surface mount (SMD) capacitors can be constructed using several different technologies to achieve a range of voltage tolerance, bulk capacitance, and parasitic device characteristics. As shown in Figure 1, these technologies can be roughly broken down between ceramic, film, tantalum electrolytic, and aluminum electrolytic with varying degrees of application overlap.

Supercapacitors Support Miniature Energy Harvester ICs In Powering ULP Devices 15 Dec 2023, 6:49 pm

ABSTRACT
Several individual electronic trends have come together to create low-cost, easy-to implement energy management circuits capable of total power supply control of scavenged and harvested energy supplied to small loads. These circuits can significantly extend the life of a battery powering the load or entirely replace the battery. Among the trends propelling practical, low-cost scavenged energy modules are:
  • the development of ultra-low power (ULP) ICs
  • the ability to create efficient ultra-low-power dc-dc converters with control logic, allowing intelligent energy measurement and management functions
  • the introduction of high-capacitance storage devices in miniature sizes.

This article builds upon a previous work discussing the benefits of ULP IC technology. Here, we will discuss the performance and characteristics of a scavenging/harvesting circuit in powering the equivalent of a ULP IC and document its performance using prismatic cell supercapacitors, radial-can supercapacitors, and extended value tantalum capacitors. The energy management circuit investigated is comprised of an energy management IC (the e-peas AEM10330) and four passive components—three capacitors and one inductor. We begin by describing the capabilities of the energy management IC and the associated application circuit.

We then discuss the electrical characteristics of the three previously mentioned capacitor types, each of which may be used to store the excess energy harvested by the chip and thereby extend operation of the energy harvesting circuit. As we explain, the different capacitor types are suited to different application requirements, and voltage derating is a key consideration for ensuring capacitor reliability. Finally, we present experimental results to illustrate the performance enabled by the supercaps and tantalum capacitors, followed by a summary of key takeaways from this discussion.

(December 5, 2023) – KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, is proud to announce that several VCAS Series multilayer varistors (MLVs) are now qualified to both the VW80808 and AEC-Q200 standards.

VCAS Series MLVs, introduced in October of 2022, were the industry’s first MLVs equipped with automotive-grade flexible terminations, and several parts in the series are now the first flexible-termination varistors to be qualified to both AEC-Q200 and VW80808 standards as well. The VW80808 standard focuses on protecting automotive electrical systems from shorts involving the battery, and the qualification is based on:

  • 5mm board bend testing
  • Power line testing (60,000 pulses at -55°C, +25°C, and +125°C)
  • Temperature cycling testing

VCAS Series MLVs with FLEXITERM terminations are engineered to reliably withstand severe flection, vibration, and temperature cycling and are tested and proven to tolerate up to 5mm of mechanical board flexure and up to 3,000 temperature cycles extending up to 150°C, which well exceeds the AEC-Q200 testing requirement of 1,000 cycles at up to 125°. Test results consistently showed that even when subjected to 200% more temperature cycles at 20% higher temperatures than those mandated for AEC-Q200 qualification, VCAS Series MLVs exhibited zero board flex failures, including internal cracks and depanelization, and no significant changes to their electrical characteristics.

The additional testing required to achieve VW80808 qualification ensures that VCAS Series MLVs deliver optimal performance in an extended range of demanding high-reliability applications in the automotive industry. They can also be used in industrial, aerospace, downhole drilling, IoT, and consumer electronics applications. Suitable applications for the series now include automotive underhood and battery line applications, signal and power lines, circuits with direct power and battery connections, circuits subject to vibration, variable temperatures, and flexure stress, smart watches and other wearables, and cleaning robots. VCAS Series MLVs are also well suited for use in applications subject to hazards including significant temperature variations, vibration, wave soldering, forced cooling, improper handling, the insertion and removal of PCBs from connectors, and high-density board configurations — all of which can result in board expansion, contraction, flexure, and cracking, and the depanelization of components mounted near the edges of the PCB, near flex zones, and near large, heavy components.

VCAS Series MLVs feature KYOCERA AVX’s patented FLEXITERM soft termination technology, which has been widely employed on automotive-qualified multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for more than 15 years and proven to provide increased reliability and outstanding mechanical and thermomechanical performance compared to competing technologies. Additional features include high current and energy handling capabilities, super-fast response times, multiple ESD strike capabilities, and high-reliability bidirectional overvoltage protection. VCAS Series MLVs provide EMI/RFI attenuation in their off state, which can reduce or even eliminate the need for additional EMC capacitors and enable lower insertion losses, lower leakage current, and unrivaled reliability compared to competing diode solutions.

The series is available in four surface mount case sizes (0603, 0805, 1206, and 1210) and rated for working voltages ranging from 3.3–85V, clamping voltages extending from 14–165V, transient energies spanning 0.1 up to 4.5J, and operating temperatures up to 150°C. It is also RoHS-compliant.

“Our VCAS Series multilayer varistors with FLEXITERM technology were developed to satisfy automotive industry demands for more robust component solutions. The new VW80808 qualification extends their proven performance beyond that guaranteed by their AEC-Q200 qualification,” said Zack Kozawa, Product Marketing Manager, KYOCERA AVX. “Parts qualified to the AEC-Q200 standard can often be insufficient for preventing flex failures caused by the mechanical and thermal stresses incurred during assembly and operation, so this additional qualification further validates their suitability for a wide range of demanding high-reliability applications in the automotive industry and beyond. The series also complements KYOCERA AVX’s extensive portfolio of automotive-qualified components, which extends across multiple product categories and provides customers with a comprehensive range of solutions engineered to address their challenging application requirements.”

VCAS Series MLVs with FLEXITERM technology are packaged on 7” reels for compatibility with automated processing equipment, and lead-time for the series is currently 10 weeks.

Technical Article: Safety Considerations for Acetonitrile SuperCapacitors 2 Nov 2023, 4:12 pm

Safety Considerations for Acetonitrile SuperCapacitors
Safety Considerations for Acetonitrile SuperCapacitors
Written By: Akihiro Kado
Abstract:
Advancements in SuperCapacitor design and manufacturing have made them a mainstay component in power supplies and backup systems that require high power density output. SuperCapacitors have now become commonplace components in many areas of modern electronic design. They bridge an important gap between batteries – used for high density energy storage, and electronic capacitors – for local power supply stabilization and decoupling.

SuperCapacitors offer the unique ability to provide large amounts of power for short periods of time. For this reason, they have found a home in applications such as electric vehicles, uninterruptible power supplies, and data storage devices. A wide variety of SuperCapacitor structures and materials have been developed, and two of the most common are based on acetonitrile and propylene carbonate solvents.

Unfortunately, even with enhanced performance, acetonitrile based SuperCapacitors have suffered slow adoption due to the lack of safety and reliability data. This is especially true in the automotive industry and other applications where rigorous safety requirements are mandated across extremely harsh environmental conditions.

New: Multilayer Organic Filters Deliver Best-in-Class Performance in RF Applications 31 Oct 2023, 4:06 pm

LP Series MLO low-pass filters, HF Series MLO high-pass filters, and BP Series MLO band-pass filters consistently outperform standard silicon and ceramic filters and help RF design engineers satisfy sustained market demand for smaller, more capable electronics.

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. (October 31st, 2023) – KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, offers three multilayer organic (MLO) filter series that are both designed and field proven to deliver best-in-class performance in a variety of RF applications.

The LP Series MLO low-pass, HF Series MLO high-pass, and BP Series MLO band-pass filters are low-profile passive devices based on KYOCERA AVX’s patented MLO high-density interconnect technology. This technology has a high dielectric constant and high lot-to-lot repeatability and exhibits low material losses, which enables the development of high-Q passive printed elements, such as inductors and capacitors, in a multilayer stack. It’s also impervious to the performance variations normally caused by temperature changes and expansion matched to most organic PCBs, which enables improved reliability compared to standard silicon and ceramic filters.

Thanks to this innovative material technology, KYOCERA AVX’s LP Series, HF Series, and BP Series MLO filters integrate inductors and capacitors into relatively small and low-profile land grid array surface-mount packages that reduce circuit complexity, conserve board space, and improve performance and reliability compared to filters comprised of discrete inductors and capacitors. All three series exhibit low parasitics and insertion loss, effective heat dissipation, very high rejection, and excellent solderability and are rated for 50Ω impedance, up to 12GHz (soon to be 20GHz), and operating temperatures extending from -55°C to +85°C. They are available in RoHS compliant and lead-free compatible variants and in a variety of case sizes spanning 2616 to 5021 with maximum height profiles of 1.02mm and gold terminations. In addition, all MLO filters are 100% electrically tested, and none of them contain any substances of very high concern (SVHCs). Common applications for the three series include mobile communications, 5G, radar, signal processing, instrumentation, and test equipment.

In addition to these common characteristics, LP Series MLO Low-Pass filters and HF Series MLO High-Pass filters exhibit a wide frequency range and excellent isolation. They are currently available in eight case sizes (2616, 3116, 3416, 4016, 4617, 4614, 4218, and 5021) and are well-suited for use in GPS, vehicle location systems, wireless LANs, and satellite receivers.

LP Series MLO filters are rated for 4W continuous power handling, frequencies spanning 71MHz to 7.09GHz, and less than 1.2dB insertion loss for passband frequencies extending from DC-f0.

HF Series MLO filters are rated for 2W continuous power handling, passband frequencies extending from 740MHz to 8GHz, and a maximum of 1.20dB insertion loss.

BP Series MLO Band-Pass filters additionally exhibit steep roll-off and high rejection of out-of-band frequencies and are rated for 1 or 2W continuous power handling, frequencies spanning 770MHz to 4.68GHz, and less than 5dB insertion loss. They are currently available in six case sizes (2616, 3116, 3416, 4016, 4617, and 5021) and are also well-suited for use in military and EMS radios, UAVs, base stations, and wireless access points and terminals.

“We have continued to expand upon all three of our MLO filter series — LP, HF, and BP — since their respective market introductions in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and we are very proud of their field-proven best-in-class RF performance compared to standard silicon and ceramic filters,” said Mohammed Abu-Naim, RF Product Manager, KYOCERA AVX, “The unique material properties of our MLO filters allow us to integrate inductors and capacitors into relatively small and low-profile packages ideally suited for helping RF design engineers satisfy sustained market demand for smaller and more capable wireless electronics, and we recently shipped new stocking packages of all three expanded series to Mouser and Digi-Key. So, parts should be readily available for testing and design-in.”

All three series of MLO filters are available in waffle packs or on tape and reel in quantities of 250 or 1,000. KYOCERA AVX also offers custom MLO filters.

Technical Article: Radiation Tolerance of Tantalum Polymer Capacitors 25 Oct 2023, 4:26 pm

Radiation Tolerance of Tantalum Polymer Capacitors
Radiation Tolerance of Tantalum Polymer Capacitors
Written By: Krystof Adamek
Abstract:
Environments rich in ionizing radiation create a particularly difficult functional challenge for electronic components. Spacecraft, nuclear reactors, particle accelerators, and hardened military equipment (to name a few examples) demand that their electrical systems operate correctly, even in the presence of high energy particles, photons, electrons, neutrons, protons, and the like. Such radiation adversely affects electronics in two ways: fundamentally damaging the constituent materials, and creating transient electrical signals that can impede functionality.

Mechanisms of radiation induced failure in semiconductors and other active devices have been well-studied, and methods for overcoming or preventing these failures have been developed. Passive devices like inductors, resistors, and capacitors, on the other hand, are less relevant from a radiation perspective due to their lack of semiconductor materials. That said, their tolerance to radiation is no less important, and it must be considered. This is especially true when new types of passive components are invented that have performance characteristics well suited to high radiation environments. Tantalum polymer electrolytic capacitors and Tantalum MnO2 capacitors are one such example, and demonstrating their durability for radiation hardened applications is a critical step toward their widespread adoption.

KYOCERA AVX Provided Key Components for the Historic Chandrayaan-3 Lunar Mission 24 Oct 2023, 12:26 pm

KYOCERA AVX contributed several components to the Pragyaan lunar rover, including stacked TCH Series surface-mount capacitors that became the first polymer capacitors to ever be used in a space mission.

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. (October 24, 2023) – KYOCERA AVX, a leading global manufacturer of advanced electronic components engineered to accelerate technological innovation and build a better future, is proud to announce that it provided several key components for the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO’s) historic Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission.

On August 23, 2023, the Chandrayaan-3 mission’s Vikram lander cemented India’s status as the first country to soft-land a spacecraft near the South Pole of the Moon and the fourth to successfully achieve a lunar landing. The lander also deployed the ISRO’s Pragyaan lunar rover and joined in its mission to study the Moon’s geology, assess its potential water resources, and evaluate its suitability for future human exploration.

KYOCERA AVX contributed several components to the Pragyaan lunar rover, including stacked TCH Series surface-mount tantalum polymer capacitors that were especially designed to suit ISRO specifications, miniature CWR15 MIL-PRF-55365 / 12 tantalum chip capacitors engineered to downsize military and aerospace circuits, high-capacitance and low-ESR TES Series ESCC QPL tantalum chip capacitors, space-level TAZ Series/CWR29 MIL-PRF-55365/11 molded tantalum chip capacitors, and high-reliability MLCCs and EMI feedthrough filters.

KYOCERA AVX began developing the stacked TCH (TCHS) Series surface-mount tantalum polymer capacitors to ISRO specifications back in 2015 and released the series 2016. The TCHS Series is based on the same high-voltage, low-ESR design as its high-reliability TCH Series capacitors. Both have a hermetically sealed ceramic case equipped with conductive polymer electrodes, but the TCHS Series delivers the 44µF/100V capability the ISRO required by stacking two 22µF/100V parts to achieve high-CV performance in the same footprint as single-layer devices. It also exhibits the same stability, reliability, and low leakage as the standard TCH Series but with remarkably low ESR values.

The TCHS Series capacitors designed for use in the Pragyaan lunar rover are rated for use in operating temperatures extending from -55°C to +125°C and exhibit excellent stability in ambient atmosphere environments. They also have the highest voltage rating of any space-grade polymer capacitor available on the market, which makes them ideal for power supplies and hold-up, power filtration, and pulse power circuits in aerospace, defense, and other high-reliability applications with high-capacitance, low-ESR, long-lifetime requirements.

To ensure suitability in high-reliability applications, TCHS Series capacitors are screened using KYOCERA AVX’s patented Q-Process, which effectively eliminates components with operational instability or excessive parametric shifts, and in the midst of the ESA and NASA qualification process. The series is also available with surge current testing and other testing based on high-reliability ESA, NASA, and MIL screening requirements.

Before the TCHS Series capacitors were deployed in the Pragyaan lunar rover, they were used in several other space projects to prove their ruggedness, reliability, and performance.

Most of the 44 TCHS Series capacitors used in the ISRO’s Pragyaan lunar rover were integrated into the power card to help warm the electronics box with energy supplied by the equipped solar panel. This was vital to mission success since the electronics box contains the instruments designed to analyze the chemical composition of the lunar surface, examine the lunar soil and rocks, measure the ions, electron density, and thermal properties of the lunar surface near the South Pole, and transmit solar power to the rover wheels.

“We’re extremely proud to be a small part of the Indian Space Research Organization’s historic Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission,” said Allen Mayar, Global Product Manager – Electrolytic Capacitors, KYOCERA AVX. “Developing space-grade components proven to satisfy challenging application, reliability, and regulatory requirements is a feat of engineering, so we are very proud to see our stacked TCH products fulfill their first critical mission.”

Mayar continued, “KYOCERA AVX has a well-established history of developing electronic components proven to satisfy the highest quality and reliability standards of a range of critical missions and applications. Now that our space-level stacked TCH Series capacitors have proven themselves in the Pragyaan lunar rover, we’re discussing future missions with the ISRO and other global space organizations and looking forward to continuing our proud tradition.”

Advantages of SuperCapacitors for Power Constrained Backup
Written By: Johnson Jiang
Abstract:
In most energy storage scenarios, the tradeoffs between power density and energy density quickly come to the foreground. This is best illustrated in the automotive industry, where power density directly translates to acceleration and driving performance, while energy density translates to the total range achievable on a tank of gas or, for an electric vehicle, on a single recharge cycle. This is true across almost every application, from wearable electronics to microgrid power networks on a college campus.

This whitepaper from KYOCERA AVX will explore the advantages of SuperCapacitors, circuit level, uninterruptable power, and microgrid considerations, and the benefits that make them a more reliable option than traditional batteries.

RF/Microwave Bias Tees from Theory to Practice (Mini-Circuits) 9 Aug 2023, 5:55 pm

ABSTRACT
Decades ago, perhaps one of the first practical lessons a circuit designer would learn at the outset of their career was the art of decoupling using a combination of different value capacitors. A good mentor would explain that because of their physical characteristics, different value capacitors were optimal for filtering different frequency bands. This author even remembers designing a decoupling network for a 25W buck converter that included the parallel combination of ceramic capacitors of 1 μF, 0.1 μF, 0.01 μF, and 1000 pF in value. The network performed well once the component leads were made short enough!

The new high-performance OCXO products are the latest addition to the company’s line of frequency control solutions and are backed by more than 90 years of experience serving that industry and manufactured in the USA.

OCXOs are temperature-controlled devices that maintain a quartz crystal’s constant operating temperature in order to prevent changes in the specified frequency that would otherwise result from variations in ambient temperature. They are widely used in applications including network infrastructure, backhaul communications, test and measurement systems, industrial equipment, medical equipment, such as MRIs, military equipment, aerospace equipment, such as satcom up and down converters and military and commercial drones, oil and gas sensors, precision timing and clock sources, and GPS precision timing devices.

KYOCERA AVX’s new KOV Series standard voltage-controlled OCXOs and KLN Series low-noise voltage-controlled OCXOs employ modern layout topologies and robust designs that deliver excellent performance in these and other applications and allow customers to achieve a super stable frequency in the form of a sinewave or a super stable timing source in the form of a CMOS clock output. KOV and KLN Series OCXOs exhibit high stability over a wide range of operating temperatures (10–50MHz ±5ppb and 50–120MHz ±10ppb from -40°C to +85°C), low jitter, which results in superior stability and allows customers to use them as the primary frequency source in their RF chain, and low phase noise and exceptional aging characteristics, with very little frequency deviation over more than 20 years of continuous operation. They are available in multiple through-hole and surface-mount package sizes and with two output types: sine and complementary metal oxide semiconductor transistor transistor logic (CMOS/TTL). Both series are also REACH and RoHS compliant.

KOV Series standard voltage-controlled OCXOs offer a wide frequency range, extending from 10–120MHz, have a quick warm-up time, and exhibit low phase noise (e.g., 120dBc/Hz at 10Hz offset and -145dBc/Hz at 1kHz offset, both with a 10MHz center frequency). They are currently available in five surface-mount package sizes (9×14, 14-pin DIP, 20×20, 22×25, and 25x25mm) rated for 3.3V or 5V supply voltages and are ideal for use in 5G picocell applications in addition to the aforementioned applications. Shipping options include tape and reel and bulk packaging.

KLN Series low-noise voltage-controlled OCXOs offer a wide frequency range, extending from 10–150MHz, tolerate micro vibrations, and exhibit excellent low-g acceleration sensitivity (<0.3ppb/G on the worst axis), superior frequency stability, and three different levels of low- to ultra-low phase noise (e.g., 130dBc/Hz at 10Hz offset and -166dBc/Hz offset for “A” level phase noise with a 10MHz center frequency). They are available in three surface-mount package sizes (14-pin DIP, 20x20, and 25x25mm) rated for 5V or 12V supply voltages and shipped in bulk packaging. In addition the aforementioned applications, they are also ideal for high-performance military equipment, such as missile and radar systems, autonomous vehicles, and phase-locked microwave applications.

“The new KYOCERA AVX OCXOs are based on our proven technology and backed by our high-performance heritage in the frequency control solutions industry, and they complement the robust KYOCERA Corporation crystal product line produced in Japan,” said Kio Ariumi, Senior Vice President, KYOCERA AVX. “Although OCXOs are widely available in today’s market, they’re typically produced by crystal-exclusive companies. KYOCERA AVX, on the other hand, offers a wide range of complementary product lines, including MLCCs, tantalum/polymer capacitors, antennas, connectors, and sensors, that provide added value for OCXO customers.”

Lead time for the series is currently 12–14 weeks.

Passive Component Advancements for SPE Connectors and Circuit Protection Devices
Passive Component Advancements for SPE Connectors and Circuit Protection Devices
Written By: Daniel West | Julian Wilson
Abstract:
As Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) begins to roll out there will be a need for easy to implement, yet reliable wire-to-board interconnects. Purchasing finished cable and connector assemblies is not always economical or viable. However, it is also undesirable to work with time consuming and difficult to process connectors. Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC) and Press-Fit technology (images below) require no crimping or soldering processes, and is easily converted to a streamlined process, while maintaining the versatility of cable lengths and positioning. In addition to reliable retention forces and gas tight seals afforded by the cold weld mechanism of IDC, signal integrity is preserved and performs beyond transmission standards set for SPE connectors.

Tantalum Capacitors for Electric Vehicles
Tantalum Capacitors for Electric Vehicles
Written By: Jeff Lee
Abstract:
An electric vehicle is a car powered by electricity unlike internal combustion locomotives that obtain driving energy by burning fossil fuels, they rotate the motor with electricity accumulated in the battery to obtain driving energy. Electric vehicles are largely composed of on-board chargers (OBC), electric power control units (EPCUs), motors, speed reducers, and high voltage battery.

The motor of an electric vehicle is a high-efficiency and high-power driving motor and has high output and rotational power. Unlike internal combustion vehicle engines, the electric motor can be made to minimize noise and vibration generation while driving.

DC Bias Characteristics of Ceramic Capacitors
DC Bias Characteristics of Ceramic Capacitors
Written By: Simon Cen
Abstract:
Most electrical engineers are at least familiar with the different ratings of ceramic capacitors, such as C0G and X7R. In many applications, the meaning of these character codes is relatively unimportant as some other factor, like price or size, may be driving component selection. Designers must be wary, however, as choosing the wrong combination of capacitor dielectric and applied voltage can have critical performance implications for the associated circuit. For class two dielectrics, the change in bulk capacitance with DC bias can be substantial. Understanding why this happens and how to choose a proper ceramic capacitor can eliminate this common pitfall.

Technical Article: Low Inductance Capacitors for High-Speed Decoupling 14 Feb 2023, 7:25 am

Low Inductance Capacitors for High-Speed Decoupling
Low Inductance Capacitors for High-Speed Decoupling
Written By: Robert Lu
Abstract:
Modern integrated circuits (IC’s) consume power at rapidly varying rates due to the density of circuits on-board and the extreme speed at which they can operate. Power supplies are required to respond to these changes in load current while maintaining a constant operating voltage. This task is becoming increasingly difficult as the complexity of power distribution networks grows and printed circuit board (PCB) design requires optimization for parasitic inductance and capacitance. Therefore, any power supply performance slack must be absorbed by the all-too-common decoupling capacitor. As shown in Figure 1, a decoupling capacitor is simply an additional parallel capacitance that provides a stable voltage and source of current when the main power supply is unable to adjust quickly enough or is too far away to properly function.

Update on Stacked Ceramic Capacitors for Defense Applications 10 Feb 2023, 8:10 pm

ABSTRACT
MIL-PRF-32535 for discrete MLCCs has led to the discussion of stacked ceramic capacitors based on BME technology.

Stacked ceramic capacitors are multiple discrete multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) terminated onto a common lead-frame for through-hole or SMT operations. They capture many of the inherent benefits of MLCC technology, like a low-loss material set, low ESR (equivalent series resistance), and higher reliability.

Typical applications like switch mode power supplies need larger capacitance values and current capabilities. Stacked MLCCs compete with discrete electrolytic capacitor technology in terms of capacitance range but have an advantage in terms of voltage and temperature capability, which naturally increases their reliability, thereby making this a preferred technology for defense applications despite its higher price point compared to electrolytics.

Polymer Solid Electrolytic Capacitors for Automotive Applications
Polymer Solid Electrolytic Capacitors for Automotive Applications
Written By: Jaroslav Tomasko | Slavomir Pala
Abstract:
Tantalum electrolytic capacitors are constructed using a sintered pellet of powdered tantalum as the anode of the device. A grown oxide layer on the contoured surface of the pellet acts as the dielectric insulator, and a cathode terminal is formed using either a conventional MnO2 electrolyte or a conductive polymer to sufficiently contact the oxide layer.

The final capacitor can be packaged in many forms, and the typical J-lead surface mount construction is shown in Figure 2. The capacitive structure is bonded to a molded case and electrically interfaced using carbon as a separation layer and silver for connection with the lead frame.
