Two Apple TV+ documentaries are nominated for Peabody Awards 15 Apr 2025, 6:47 pm

The 2025 Peabody Awards have announced the first batch of this year’s nominees. Apple TV+ has two nominations.

“Bread & Roses” and “The Last of the Sea Women” are nominated in the Documentary category.

Here’s how “Bread & Roses” is described: Sahra Mani’s documentary follows the experiences of Afghan women since the Taliban took control of Kabul, including an ex-government employee forced to stay indoors, a woman organizing resistance via her dentistry practice, and a refugee who flees to Pakistan.
Here’s how “The Last of the Sea Women” is described: Director Sue Kim follows a declining community of women in South Korea—most of them now in their 60s or older—who dive to the ocean floor without oxygen tanks to harvest seafood to feed their community.

The Peabody Awards, named for the American businessman and philanthropist George Peabody, honor what are described “as the most powerful, enlightening, and invigorating stories in all of television, radio, and online media.”

This year’s Peabody Award nominees were selected by a unanimous vote of 27 jurors from more than 1,000 entries across TV, radio/podcasts and online. You can find the complete list of nominees here

Apple will permanently close its retail store in downtown Bristol, England 15 Apr 2025, 11:02 am

Apple has confirmed that it will be permanently closing its retail store in downtown Bristol, England, and there is no replacement in sight, reports MacRumors.

Apple Bristol will be closing its doors on Saturday, August 9, due to redevelopment plans at the Cabot Circus Shopping Centre, and the adjacent Bristol Shopping Quarter. Architects’ Journal says the regeneration project will demolish the “failing”1990s Galleries shopping centre in Bristol’s Broadmead quarter, redeveloping the site to create “a sustainable urban quarter that will stand the test of time.”

Apple Bristol open in 2008. Despite the store closing, Apple says its employees will “continue their roles at Apple.”

With the shuttering of Apple Bristol, the tech giant will have 39 retail stores in the United Kingdom (although one is rumored to coming to Oxford(. The country with the most number of Apple locations in the UK is England, with 34 stores, which is about 85% of all Apple stores in the UK.

FTF: ’Silicon Six’ tech firms such as Apple don’t pay enough UK corporate income tax 15 Apr 2025, 12:23 am

The big American tech firms known as the “Silicon Six” (Apple, Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, Netflix, and Microsoft) have been accused of paying almost US$278 billion less UK corporate income tax in the past decade compared with the statutory rate for US companies making the same profits, according to The Guardian.

The article says they generated $11 trillion of revenue and $2.5 trillion of profits over the past 10 years, yet paid an average 18.8% in combined national and federal corporation taxes, compared with an average 29.7% in the U.S,. according to the Fair Tax Foundation (FTF),

The FTF is a not-for-profit social enterprise. It’s mission is to make sure businesses practice “responsible tax conduct.”

“Our analysis would indicate that tax avoidance continues to be hardwired into corporate structures,” Paul Monaghan, the chief executive of the FTF, told The Guardian. “he Silicon Six’s corporate income tax contributions are, in percentage terms, way below what sectors such as banking and energy are paying in many parts of the world.”

He pointed to “aggressive tax practices” such as the contingency tax positions, while the companies also exerted “enormous political influence as well as economic power”, spending millions of dollars on lobbying governments.

Apple removes AI references from iPhone 16 billboards  14 Apr 2025, 8:13 pm

Apple has removed AI references from its New York billboards promoting the iPhone.

BGR reports that — as noticed by PMC’s Parker Ortolani — the “Imagine it. Genmoji it” slogan has been replaced with “iPhone 16 Pro. Cinemasterpiece.”

This is a surprising move. Apple has been hit with multiple lawsuits for “false adverting” that promised AI and “personalized Siri” features in the iPhone 16. Those features have yet to arrive.

However, Apple hopes to release its delayed Apple Intelligence Siri features in the fall, according to a report by The New York Times.

“Apple hasn’t canceled its revamped Siri,” the article says. “The company plans to release a virtual assistant in the fall capable of doing things like editing and sending.”

This contradicts previous reports. Last month Apple spokesperson Jacqueline Roy indicated to Daring Fireball that it would take longer.

“Siri helps our users find what they need and get things done quickly, and in just the past six months, we’ve made Siri more conversational, introduced new features like type to Siri and product knowledge, and added an integration with ChatGPT,” she said. “We’ve also been working on a more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps. It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year.”

And Reuters said AI improvements to Siri won’t arrive until 2026.
