Infrared Sauna and Traditional Sauna: Which One is Best for Me? 29 Dec 2023, 7:00 am

Have you made the decision to get a sauna? Congratulations! You may, however, be struggling with the question: “Infrared saunas and traditional saunas: which one is best for me?” The sauna professionals at Juniper are more than happy to help you answer that question. First of all, whichever type of sauna you choose, you will reap countless benefits. Either type of sauna will improve your circulation, boost your cardiovascular health, help relieve stiffness and joint pain, and cause copious amounts of sweat, thought to detoxify the body. That being said, the experience you will get from using a traditional sauna or an infrared sauna is quite different. Let’s examine those differences.

The Type of Heat

A traditional sauna produces heat from an electrical unit that heats stones that have been piled on top. Water can be poured over the stones producing steam.

An infrared sauna produces dry heat from infrared light rays which penetrate the skin, raising the body temperature from the inside out.

The Sauna Experience

The traditional sauna temperature is extremely hot: 160-200° F. As mentioned, water can be poured over the hot rocks, producing steam and humidity, which many people enjoy. Most people can tolerate the heat in a traditional sauna for about 20 minutes. The temperature inside the infrared sauna remains at about 100-150° F, which some people find more comfortable. The length of time one can stay in an infrared sauna is longer, up to 40 minutes. In either type of sauna, copious amounts of perspiration will be produced by the body.

Heat Up Time

A traditional sauna will take 30 to 40 minutes to reach its optimum temperature. An infrared sauna is ready to be used 10 to 15 minutes after being turned on.

Cost to Operate

An infrared sauna is more energy efficient than a traditional sauna due to the shorter heat-up time. Neither type of sauna will add significantly to your monthly electric bill, but the traditional sauna will cost slightly more to run.

What About Maintenance?

Saunas are extremely low maintenance. In the dry heat of an infrared sauna, the only moisture being produced is your own perspiration. Taking care to sit on absorbent towels takes care of that issue for the most part. On the other hand, the steam and humidity in a traditional sauna can become something that requires more maintenance to ensure things stay hygienic.

Installation

Traditional saunas may be more labor intensive to install due to ventilation, a requested floor drain, and electrical details. They do have the option of being installed outside the home, which many people who want the real Finnish sauna experience delight in. Installing an infrared sauna is more straightforward as they are often pre-built and portable. Many people install their own indoor infrared saunas as a DIY project.

Health Benefits

As mentioned above, the health benefits of either traditional or infrared saunas are considerable. Relaxation, better sleep, improved skin, stress reduction, reduced pain in joints, and much more are all possible. There have been a few studies, however, that have indicated that there may be some additional benefits provided by infrared saunas. These benefits include improvements in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.

Are you still wondering, “Infrared saunas and traditional saunas: which one is best for me?” If so, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What benefits do you hope to get from a sauna?
  • What type of heat experience do you prefer?
  • Are you willing to put in some time to maintain your sauna?

Whichever type of sauna you decide upon, base your decision on personal preference, desired benefits, and the practical details of maintenance and installation. When you are ready to add a sauna to your home or backyard, come by and see us at Juniper in Appleton, WI. We carry Pro6® infrared saunas and Almost Heaven® traditional saunas, both with indoor and outdoor models. We’d love to share our sauna experiences and help you decide which is best for you.

How to Teach Your Kids to Play Pool 25 Dec 2023, 7:00 am

There’s a unique charm in the clink of billiard balls, the smooth feel of a well-crafted cue, and the strategic dance of a game played on a billiards table. Pool, a classic game enjoyed by generations, is not only a great way to spend family time but also an excellent skill to teach your children. If you’re looking to teach your kids to play pool, here’s a step-by-step guide.

Steps to Teach Your Kids to Play Pool

1. Introduce Them to the Pool Table

Begin by familiarizing your child with the pool table itself, specific to the age of the child. Describe such details as its dimensions, pockets, and the felt’s texture. This initial acquaintance ensures they appreciate and care for the table, understanding its value as more than just a game surface.

2. Understand the Basics

Before they take their first shot, make sure they know the game’s objective. Differentiate between the cue ball and the other balls, explain the primary goal, and introduce them to basic terms like “break,” “shot,” “scratch,” and “rack”.

3. Perfect the Stance

As any regular pool player knows, a good stance is important. Help your child position their feet shoulder-width apart, leaning slightly over the table. They should be able to comfortably reach the cue ball without overstretching or feeling cramped.

4. Grip and Cue Technique

Teach them to hold the cue lightly with their dominant hand while balancing the cue’s other end with their non-dominant hand. The cue should glide smoothly between the fingers, ensuring precision in every shot.

5. Aiming and Shooting

Begin with the basics of aiming. Guide them to visualize the path they want the ball to take. Let them practice shooting without the balls first, focusing on a smooth, straight stroke. Then, introduce the balls and allow them to practice hitting the cue ball, guiding it toward a targeted pocket.

6. Make It Fun

Kids learn best when they’re having fun. Incorporate challenges that hone their skills. For instance, who can pocket a ball with the fewest tries? Or set up specific shots they have to replicate.

7. Regular Practice

Like any skill, regular practice is key. Designate a “pool night” once a week or integrate quick games into your regular routine. The more they play, the more confident and skilled they’ll become.

8. Patience and Encouragement

Remember, every child learns at their own pace. Some might take to the game instantly, while others might need more time. Be patient, offer constructive feedback, and celebrate their little victories.

If you’re looking to teach your kids to play pool, there’s no better place to start than with The Pool People. We offer a wide array of top-quality billiards tables, so you’re sure to find a table that’s perfect for your home.

In essence, teaching your kids to play pool is more than just imparting a skill. It’s about sharing moments, building bonds, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Jump into this journey with the perfect pool table from The Pool People this winter and let the games begin!

8 Games to Play on a Billiards Table (Besides Pool) 22 Dec 2023, 7:00 am

So, you bought that gorgeous billiards table you have always wanted. You even have a designated spot for it in your game room or basement. The family has learned to play basic pool and is having a great time enjoying your new table and honing their pool-playing skills. You don’t regret your investment at all, but sometimes you wonder if there are any other games to play on a billiards table. The good news is that your billiards table is more multipurpose than you initially thought. After perfecting your 8 Ball and 9 Ball games, you may be itching to try some non-standard games, or maybe even using that billiards table for something totally different than pool. Let’s take a look at eight games to play on a billiards table (besides pool).

Non-Standard Games to Play on a Billiards Table

If you have been playing pool for a while, you are familiar with the standard games of 8 Ball or 9 Ball. Those classic games are fantastic, but it is fun to shake things up from time to time and play variants of these games to keep things challenging (or in one case, beginner friendly). Here are some games to play on a billiards table the whole family will enjoy.

  1. One Pocket: In this game, each player is assigned one pocket, and that pocket only, in which to sink their balls.
  2. Cutthroat: This is a great game for three people, in which each person is assigned five balls. The object is to sink the other player’s balls while at least one of yours stays on the table.
  3. Pool Darts: In this game, each pocket is assigned a points value. The end pockets can be worth five points and middle pockets worth 10. If you like, give the different colored balls different point values as well. There are no assigned balls and the player to get the most points wins.
  4. Any 8: Beginners and kids love this game. Instead of being assigned stripes or solids, the first person to get any eight balls into the pockets wins. There is no calling out which pocket and no worrying about the 8 ball.

Games to Play on a Billiards Table (Besides Pool)

Your billiards table was a big investment, and you hope to keep it in good condition for a long time to come. You probably even have a set of rules about what can happen on or around your pool table. No food or drink, no sitting or climbing on the table, and for goodness’ sake, don’t let the cat up on it. Your goal is to protect the surface of your billiards table and avoid costly repairs. The idea of using your billiards table for anything other than playing pool is sacrilege. But wait. Did you know you can get a billiards table topper that can convert it (without harm) into a surface for other activities? Now that is a practical idea. Here are some games to play on a billiards table.

  1. Table Tennis: Yes, you can convert your billiards table into a table tennis table. Juniper sells these converter tops complete with net! All you need are the paddles and balls and you are good to go with a whole different game to be played on your billiards table.
  2. Board Games: There are also table toppers that are meant for dining that can be purchased to top your billiards table. You can use these table toppers for playing board games such as Monopoly or whatever the latest family board game craze of the moment is. Your billiards table surface is completely covered and protected.
  3. Jigsaw Puzzles: Every family loves to work on puzzles together, and this activity can easily be performed on your billiards table with the addition of the dining table topper mentioned above. And you can leave the puzzle in place until it is completed, which is harder to do when it is on the coffee table or your actual dining table!
  4. Poker/Card Games: If you are a card-playing family, a dining top accessory for your billiards table can convert your table into the perfect spot for poker or your game of choice.

Do you wish your billiards table could be more multipurpose? We hope these eight games to play on a billiards table (besides pool) have given you ideas for making the most of your recreational investment. Juniper and The Pool People have billiards table converter tops in stock, along with all the standard supplies you need for your table’s intended use for playing pool. Visit us at our Appleton location for more information on games to play on a billiards table or to choose a gorgeous new billiards table for your home.

How Do I Get Snow Off My Hot Tub? 15 Dec 2023, 7:00 am

Using your hot tub in winter is one of the most pleasurable things you can do. However, it is winter and we are in Wisconsin. That combination usually means one thing: snow. About now you are probably wondering “How do I get snow off my hot tub?” Snow and hot tubbing are not mutually exclusive. That being said, you do need to remove that snow from your hot tub so that your spa is usable. Let’s take a look at measures you can take to not only get snow off your hot tub but prevent it entirely.

Use the Proper Tools to Get Snow Off the Hot Tub Cover

The last thing you want to do is damage your hot tub cover. If you use a sharp or heavy shovel for snow removal, you risk tearing or puncturing the cover, and you definitely don’t want that to happen. The best thing to use is a long-handled soft brush to sweep the snow off the top of the hot tub cover. If the snow has turned to ice, don’t slide it around on the cover top because ice can cause damage too. The best practice is to remove the snow before it becomes a heavy load or turns to ice.

Prevent Snow and Ice From Sticking to Your Hot Tub Cover

There are some products that prevent snow and ice from sticking to your hot tub cover. There is an item called a “hot tub cover cap” that you can put on over the top of your hot tub cover. Imagine a shower cap with elasticized sides that fits over your hot tub cover. If it gets snowed on, you can remove it easily and avoid damaging your actual hot tub cover.

Enclose the Entire Hot Tub to Keep Snow Off

The ultimate way to get snow off your hot tub is to prevent it from getting there in the first place. That means having some sort of enclosure that covers the area where the hot tub is located. A covered patio, a canopy, or a gazebo are some structures that will protect your hot tub from not just snow, but rain and sun as well. Juniper sells Covana spa covers, which have retractable roofs which are super insulated hot tub covers that can be raised to create a gazebo-style roof over the top of your spa. Imagine being able to use your hot tub by simply turning a key that raises the roof of your hot tub, transforming it into an accessible, private, and protected spa you can enjoy no matter how severe the winter climate is. Simply brush off the cover. You will never have to worry about how to get snow off your hot tub again!

Your hot tub was a big investment, and the team at Juniper wants to be sure you get the most out of it. Using your spa in the winter months is a pleasure not to be missed. Use your hot tub to stay warm outside, socialize with family and friends, and continue your hydrotherapy no matter what the weather. When you wonder “How do I get snow off my hot tub?” know that Juniper has your back with all the essential supplies you need to make your hot tub experience great all year long!

Can I Finance a Hot Tub? 11 Dec 2023, 7:00 am

Dreaming of turning your backyard or patio into a personal oasis with a luxurious hot tub? Perhaps you’ve already pictured yourself sinking into its warm embrace, feeling the stress of the day melt away. But there is one lingering question: “Can I finance a hot tub?” The answer is a resounding yes! Let’s dive into the world of hot tub financing and help you navigate the process.

Understanding Hot Tub Financing

Just like other major purchases such as cars or homes, hot tubs can be financed. In fact, hot tub financing is a popular choice for many homeowners as it allows them to enjoy the luxury of a spa without the immediate financial output. By breaking down the total hot tub cost into manageable monthly payments, you can indulge in relaxation much sooner.

Why Consider Financing?

  • Immediate Enjoyment: Financing allows you to bring home your dream hot tub almost instantly rather than waiting months or even years while you save up the entire amount.
  • Budget-Friendly: By spreading the hot tub cost over time, your wallet feels less of a pinch, allowing for more financial flexibility.
  • Build Credit: Timely payments on your hot tub financing can contribute positively to your credit score.

What to Do if Snow Gets in Your Above Ground Pool 8 Dec 2023, 7:00 am

What to do if snow gets in your above ground pool is a question you may be pondering. We want to encourage you to make it your mission to ensure that snow doesn’t become an issue for your favorite space of relaxation and recreation. Living in Wisconsin, as we do, our winters can be quite severe. With all the snow and ice we experience, an above ground pool that is left unwinterized can receive severe damage. The pool pros at Juniper want to go over the steps you should take to winterize your above ground pool, and how to care for your pool once winter weather sets in. Snow and ice in your above ground pool can have a very negative impact on it and we want to help you protect your investment.

Keep Your Above Ground Pool Covered

You don’t want to spend a minute worrying about whether your above ground pool is adequately protected against our Wisconsin winter. The first step towards that goal is to adequately cover your pool once you have winterized it. Refer to our helpful blog post “How to Winterize an Above Ground Pool in Wisconsin.” The cover should be weighed down and secured to prevent it from being disturbed by wind. In addition to this protective cover, it is a good idea to use air pillows underneath it. Air pillows prevent a solid sheet of ice from forming across the top of the water and make pressure form against the pillow rather than against the walls of the pool. When ice is allowed to form freely (without an air pillow) on the surface of your above ground pool, it expands outward and can damage your cover, liner, and pool walls.

Protect Your Above Ground Pool Cover

Before there is even a hint of snow, falling leaves can cover the top of your above ground pool. There are special leaf nets available that you can place on the cover which are easily removed, leaves and all. Otherwise, you can use a special pool leaf rake to remove the leaves.

Once the snow does begin to fall, you will want to remove it from the surface of your pool cover as soon as possible. Snow is very heavy, and if left to pile up, its weight can pull in the sides of the pool and damage side walls and rails. For light snow, you can use a leaf blower or a telescopic pole with a brush attachment. For heavier buildup, you will need to use a long-handled broom. For snow melt, a pool cover vac is a great investment.

What to do if snow gets in your above ground pool?  It isn’t the end of the world if some snow melt gets in, but it could change the water chemistry that you carefully set up when you winterized your pool.

Check Your Above Ground Pool from Time to Time in Winter

You may think you can now sit by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa until spring, but you do still need to check on your above ground pool occasionally. Besides removing any snowfall, you will want to check that the cover is taut, and that the air pillow is in the correct position. These damage control checks won’t take much time, and the effort will be well worth it come spring when your pool is in great shape.

What to do if snow gets in your above ground pool? Try not to let that happen and you will have peace of mind all winter long knowing that your pool is protected.  Still have questions? Your friends at Juniper are here to help. Call or come by and consult with Juniper’s pool experts. We can help you with any part of the process.

How to Give the Family a Surprise Game Room for Christmas 4 Dec 2023, 7:00 am

The festive season has always been synonymous with joy, laughter, and heartwarming surprises. As snow blankets the neighborhood and twinkling lights decorate homes, there’s a palpable excitement in the air. But where do you start in creating this perfect family game room? The Pool People have got you covered. Here’s how:

Decide on the Essentials

First things first, determine what games your family loves the most. A classic billiards table is always a hit, offering hours of friendly competition. Arcade games can transport you back in time, bringing nostalgia and modern fun together. Ping pong provides an active challenge and is sure to generate lots of laughter. And shuffleboard? It’s a game that all ages can enjoy, from the youngest members of your clan to the elders.

Explore Our Collections

Plan the Layout

A game room needs to be as functional as it is fun. Consider the space you have and how best to utilize it. Do you have a large open area or several smaller spaces? Measure and plan where each game or activity could be placed, ensuring there’s enough space to move around and play comfortably.

Add Some Ambiance

Create the right atmosphere with ambient lighting, game-themed décor, and a sound system for those moments when you need some lively background music. Don’t forget to include accessories such as cues, chalk, triangle rack, cue racks, and more. Having the right equipment elevates the gaming experience, making every game feel like a mini-event.

Don’t Forget the Comforts

Game rooms aren’t just about the games. Think about adding cozy game room furniture for spectators. Complementary furniture takes the experience up a notch and completes the game room aesthetic. Our extensive range offers everything you need, ensuring your game room becomes the favorite hangout spot in the house.

Think Beyond the Holidays

Already Stressing Over Holiday Pounds? A Swim Spa Is the FUN Way to Work Them Off! 27 Nov 2023, 7:00 am

The holiday season is right around the corner, and with it comes the joy of spending time with loved ones, indulging in festive treats, and celebrating the year’s end. However, for many of us, the thought of the inevitable holiday weight gain can be a source of stress. But what if we told you there’s a fun and effective way to stay active and shed those extra pounds? Enter the swim spa.

At The Pool People, we believe that swim spas are the perfect solution to help you maintain your fitness goals while enjoying every moment of the holiday season. Let’s jump into the world of swim spas and discover how they can make exercise enjoyable and convenient year-round.

Aquatic Exercise for All Seasons

One of the standout features of a swim spa is its versatility. Unlike traditional pools, swim spas are designed to be used year-round. Whether it’s the heat of summer or the chill of winter, you can enjoy the benefits of aquatic exercise without the limitations imposed by the weather. So, while others may be huddled indoors during the colder months, you can stay active and healthy in the comfort of your own swim spa.

Low Impact, High Rewards

Swim spas offer an excellent way to work off those holiday pounds without subjecting your body to high-impact exercises that can strain joints and muscles. The buoyancy of the water reduces the impact on your body, making it an ideal choice for people of all fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries or joint issues.

Endless Swimming

One of the key features of a swim spa is its adjustable current. You can swim endlessly against a gentle or more challenging current, providing a great cardiovascular workout that targets all major muscle groups. It’s like having your own personal lap pool, minus the need for a large space.

Resistance Training

In addition to swimming, swim spas offer options such as resistance bands and rowing systems that allow you to perform a variety of resistance-based exercises. These exercises help build muscle strength and tone your body while burning calories.

Convenience at Home

With a swim spa in your backyard, you have the convenience of exercising on your schedule. No need to commute to a gym or community pool; simply step outside and get into your swim spa whenever you feel like it. It’s a hassle-free way to stay committed to your fitness routine.

Fun for the Whole Family

Exercise doesn’t have to be a solitary activity. Swim spas are large enough for the whole family to enjoy together. Whether it’s a family soak, water aerobics, or just splashing around, a swim spa can be a source of fun and bonding.

Discover Your Swim Spa

We offer a variety of models, each designed to meet different needs and preferences. Our knowledgeable staff can assist you in selecting the perfect swim spa for your fitness goals and space requirements, ensuring that you make the most of your investment.

This holiday season, you don’t have to stress about the extra pounds. Instead, embrace the fun and fitness that a swim spa from The Pool People can bring to your life. Must-Have Hot Tub Chemicals for Sparkling Water 23 Nov 2023, 7:00 am

Nothing beats the experience of soaking in crystal-clear, sparkling water. To achieve and maintain that pristine water quality in your hot tub, you’ll need the right lineup of hot tub chemicals. At Juniper, your trusted source for all things spa related, we understand the importance of water quality. Here are the must-have hot tub chemicals that will ensure your spa water remains sparkling and inviting.

Sanitizers

One of the most important hot tub chemicals you’ll need is a sanitizer. Sanitizers are responsible for killing bacteria and other microorganisms that can thrive in warm water. The most common sanitizers for hot tubs are chlorine and bromine. Chlorine is excellent for its rapid disinfecting properties, while bromine is known for its stability in high-temperature environments, making it ideal for hot tubs. These chemicals help keep your hot tub water safe and clean.

Shock Treatment

Regular shock treatment is essential to break down organic contaminants like sweat, body oils, and cosmetics that can accumulate in your hot tub. Shocking your hot tub helps to eliminate these impurities and restore water clarity. Choose a non-chlorine shock treatment for a quick fix without affecting your sanitizer levels.

pH Balancers

Maintaining the correct pH level in your hot tub is crucial for water clarity and comfort. The ideal pH level for hot tubs falls between 7.2 and 7.6 on the pH scale. To achieve this, you may need pH increasers or decreasers to adjust the water’s acidity or alkalinity as necessary.

Calcium Hardness Increaser

Maintaining the right calcium hardness level is essential to prevent water from becoming corrosive or scaling. Depending on your local water source, you may need to add a calcium hardness increaser to ensure your hot tub water remains balanced and safe for both the tub and its users.

Stain and Scale Control

Stains and scale buildup can be unsightly and damaging to your hot tub’s components. Using a stain and scale control product can prevent these issues by sequestering minerals and preventing them from precipitating out of the water.

Test Strips and Kits

Regularly monitoring your hot tub’s water chemistry is vital to keeping it clean and safe. Invest in a good quality water test kit or test strips to check sanitizer levels, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. At Juniper, we offer a range of test kits and professional advice to help you keep your hot tub water perfectly balanced.

Your Source for Hot Tub Chemicals

Your hot tub is a place for relaxation and enjoyment, and maintaining its water quality is key to a pleasant soaking experience. The must-have hot tub chemicals mentioned above will help you achieve sparkling, clear water that’s safe for you and your loved ones.

At Juniper, we’re dedicated to providing you with the best products and expert advice to keep your hot tub in top condition. Visit our store to explore our wide selection of hot tub chemicals and speak to our knowledgeable staff. With the right maintenance routine and the right chemicals, you can enjoy your hot tub all year round, knowing that the water is always inviting and crystal clear.
