Gentle Hikes of Minnesota’s North Shore 4 Apr 2025, 8:12 pm

This weekend there are some opportunities at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery to learn about accessible places to hike along the North Shore and to enjoy photography from those areas. On Friday April 4th, from 5-7pm, you can attend a reception and artist talk by Ladona Tornabene, Ph.D., MCHES. Tornabene’s photography will be on exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post Gallery through Sunday April 20th. And then on Saturday April 5th, from 2-3:30pm, you can go to the book signing and talk for “Know Before You Go” by authors Lisa Vogelsang, Ph.D., and Ladona Tornabene, Ph.D., MCHES.

Poplar Plunge Fundraiser, Gunflint Trail 6 Mar 2025, 7:59 pm

On Saturday March 15th, from 12-2pm, you can help raise funds for the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department by taking the poplar plunge! There will be ice holes and saunas at White Pine Lodge and Poplar Haus. If you choose to take the plunge at both locations, you will win a free drink and a prize! There will also be food and drink specials at both locations. Volunteers from the Gunflint Trail Fire Department will be supervising each ice hole and taking donations.

John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, North Shore, MN 28 Feb 2025, 8:07 pm

This weekend is the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon! Due to some recent extra warm temperatures melting down the snow base, the start of the race had to be moved to Two Harbors. The race will begin on Sunday March 2nd. You have an opportunity to meet the mushers and their dogs, starting at 8am. There are three race lengths, the 40, the 120 and the marathon. The 40 will finish at ‘The Pit’ in Two Harbors on March 2nd. The 120 will finish at Trestle Inn in Finland on March 3rd. And the marathon will finish at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino on March 4th.

Cook County Soil & Water Tree and Shrub Sale 6 Feb 2025, 7:59 pm

Even though the snow is still falling, it is almost time to order trees and shrubs from the Cook County Soil & Water Tree and Shrub sale. Online ordering will open on Monday February 10th at 10am. They recommend ordering early for the best availability. Order pick-up is on Thursday May 8th, from 12pm-4pm, at the storage garage behind the Community Center in Grand Marais, MN. They will have many native varieties that you can choose from. They state that using indigenous trees and shrubs helps to reclaim the original ecosystem of northern Minnesota.

This weekend the Superior Cycling Association is hosting the Norpine Fat Bike Classic! Race day is Saturday January 11th and all the action is happening at the Cascade Lodge and Restaurant. Both the long and short races begin at 10am and the rewards ceremony is at 2:30pm. On Sunday, there is a group ride at Pincushion Mountain.

Winter Solstice Shadow Puppet Show 19 Dec 2024, 8:42 pm

This Saturday December 21st is the annual Winter Solstice Shadow Puppet Show, put on by the Good Harbor Hill Players, at the North House Folk School. The Winter Solstice celebration honors the darkest day of the year and heralds the return of the light. This year’s show is Whoo Shall I Say is Calling? and features a northern animal who thrives in the dark winter nights: the owl. The performance is outside and begins at 6pm. After the performance, there is an indoor potluck, you can bring food to share and utensils.
