Safe RV Travel – Get The Camper Ready 10 Apr 2019, 4:21 pm

Safe RV travel, yes, it should take precedent over anything else. RV traveling is an amazing way to see the country. But, what are the safest steps to get the RV ready to travel? These quick RV preparation tips will ensure the RV will be the perfect home for your long trips and will keep the family safe as you go RVing again and again this season.

Ok, it’s time to take the RV out of storage. What should the RVer need to check to make sure it operates in the safest way possible? For any of the service checks listed here, please check manuals and/or take the RV in for service if you need assistance. Product manufacturers generally know their product best and should always be taken seriously.

  1. Battery check
  2. Flush the water system and check for leaks
  3. Check appliances and wireless electronics
  4. Perform a tire check
  5. Check all fluids in the RV
  6. Check for damage to the RV
  7. Make sure the hitch is safe

ARE THE BATTERIES OPERATING SAFELY AT 100%?

Safe RV Travel auto mechanic checking car battery voltageAs batteries sit in storage they may lose some of their charge. Make sure the batteries are charged and that the water levels are filled. As a result, some people disconnect the battery for storage in the off season. Reconnect the battery correctly and safely. The easiest way to get stranded is to have a malfunctioning battery while on the road. A quick check of the battery’s condition can save a lot of time down the “road”. Learn more about RV batteries here.

MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO LEAKS IN THE WATER SYSTEM

It is possible that leaks have developed while the RV was in storage, so this step is essential to make sure you have clean water for your trip. Flush and sanitize the entire water system, including hoses and faucets. Similarly, keep an eye out for leaks in any place the water would flow through the pipes, and repair any leaks you find before traveling. After repairing leaks, flush out the water heater tank and refill it and replace the filter.

MAINTENANCE CHECK OF ALL APPLIANCES AND WIRELESS DEVICES

Propane tanks, refrigerators, ovens, air conditioners, washing machines, or any other appliances should have a routine safety check each year. This will give you time to get anything not working repaired before you travel. Remember that propane tanks expire, so check to make sure they are still safe.

If you have awnings, jacks, lights, and slides or other switches, test these for safe operation. An RVer can safely operate and inspect all of these by using smartRVcontrols devices, wirelessly, from anywhere near the RV. This will also ensure that your remote devices have batteries that are working.

Don’t forget the leveling tools! Make sure you bring your leveling products and tools with the camper. If purchased, check that the WoBLR leveler has batteries and your leveling devices are in place.

CHECK TIRE CONDITIONS BEFORE DRIVING ON THE ROADS SAFE RV TRAVEL

Setting RV tires to the correct inflation pressure is critical to optimum tire life, tire performance, vehicle handling, and most important SAFETY. –RVSEF

Of course, tires that are in good shape on your RV, as well as all vehicles, are especially important for safe RV travel. Make sure the tires do not have excessive wear or cracks in the treads or sidewalls, as well as checking the air pressure in each tire. Check your manual for optimal pressure. MAKE SURE YOUR ENGINE AND GENERATOR FLUIDS ARE CHANGED

Safe RV Travel classic vehicle engine

Check all fluid levels in the transmission, power steering, coolant, oil, windshield washer fluid, brakes, and your generator oil. Make sure the levels are full, and if they aren’t check for leaks. Regular maintenance is important with oil changes and other engine fluids. Any abnormal levels should be checked at a service center by a professional technician.

CRACKS CAN HAPPEN IN THE BODY OF THE MOTORHOME!

Check the seams on the entire RV to make sure there are no cracks, holes, or other damage. While doing so, if any damage is found, use sealants that are made for your RV to make repairs, or take it to a service center to have the roof resurfaced.

Furthermore, while checking the safety of the RV, check the gauges, lights, registration, insurance, and emissions inspection decal. Also check to make sure all safety devices are operating correctly: smoke, PL gas leak, and CO2 detectors and fire extinguisher. Making sure everything is operating safely will save you from potential emergencies while on the road!

HITCHING YOUR RV TO YOUR VEHICLE SAFELY FOR SAFE RV TRAVEL

Above all, make sure you have your hitch pin and locking clip and your Hitch PinLeash securely attached.Safe RV Travel RV Intelligence HitchPin Leash

RV Intelligence Releases Innovative New Multi-Function Switch Module 14 Jan 2019, 8:21 pm

Longwood, FL, January 8, 2019–

“The smartRVcontrols is a revolutionary product in the RV industry. Having an easy-to-use switch module to replace or use with the existing switch will make RV users’ lives more stress free, allowing them to enjoy their vacations so much more,” said Herb Gingold, owner of RV Intelligence.

RV Intelligence is excited to announce its newest product, smartRVcontrols, a revolutionary aftermarket DIY remote control module that is connected to a smartphone or tablet. A smartRVcontrols module is configured via the smartphone app to control any one of multiple functions in an RV. “This product is what RVers have been asking for. You can now get the remote control features of high-end RVs, you can easily install smartRVcontrols yourself, and you canoperate multiple features with your smartphone in your RV,” stated Gingold.

The smartRVcontrols are multi-function remote control modules that are configured in the smartRVapp to control more than eight different features in an RV, such as lights (bulb or LED), jacks, awnings, slides, relays, valves, RGB LEDs and more. Users download the free smartphone smartRVapp, available for iOS and Android, to configure a module for the function needed. The smartRVcontrols have a 100-foot range, and cell/Wi-Fi service is not needed for operation. The smartRVapp can control multiple smartRVcontrols at the same time.

The smartRVcontrols can be installed three ways:

  1. REPLACE: Replacing the existing switch with a smartRVcontrols module is the first installation option. In minutes you will have smartphone control of your RV feature. The smartRVcontrols module connects directly to the existing wiring and covers the mounting hole.
  2. WORK WITH THE SWITCH: Working with the existing switch is the second installation option. The smartRVcontrols module has external switch inputs. Using quick disconnects you can easily connect the smartRVcontrols module into the wiring to control the feature via your smartphone. The original switch will still work at all times.
  3. STAND ALONE: A stand-alone switch is the third installation option. This option allows you to add new smartRVcontrol features to any RV and control them with your smartphone or the smartRVcontrol switch directly.

RV Intelligence was founded in 2017 by Herb and Vicky Gingold. It started with the desire to make their RV vacation experiences more stress free by solving common camping problems, eventually introducing their innovations to the RV market. In addition to the WoBLR and Hitch PinLeash, RV Intelligence continues to develop products to make RV life easier.

“RV Intelligence always strives to develop new products that provide RV customers with features found in high-end coaches. We are always working on new ideas,” said Gingold.

Things That Would Never Happen Staying in Hotels 11 Jul 2018, 4:01 am

Vacation to the Florida Keys

Hello again, Herb Gingold here from RV Intelligence. We are taking a break from talking about products, and I want to tell you about the friends we met on our trip to the Florida Keys for the 4th of July. It was an amazing adventure of family, new friends, great food, excellent RV parks, and a remarkable location.

We set our sights on the Florida Keys. We chose to have our main activities be snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, America’s underwater national park, and then the fireworks in Key West Harbor, a great place to see really good fireworks. Along the way we discovered one of Florida’s little known theme parks and made an amazing 21 new friends! We used no tollways, only state roads and minimal highways. We took the time to see what was around us.

Right out of Orlando we headed south along old 441. The first sight was the old Desert Inn at Yeehaw Junction, a famous stop on the road to Miami for decades, still in operation. Further down the road we hit Okeechobee and came upon the most incredible collection of war relics (tanks, helicopter, torpedo). I am a huge fan of military stuff, so we stopped and read the plaques. As a veteran myself, the site caused me to pause and reflect. Continuing on, we went through the most trackless farmland in the US, miles upon miles of sugarcane. There are snakes and gators in those cane fields, and stopping was not an option! Our course took us along the banks of the great Lake Okeechobee, so vast it can be seen from space. Finally we reached our first camping stop, the KOA campground at Lion Country Safari. What a great campground, but the most fun was hearing the lions roar in the morning. The real surprise was Lion Country Safari, a fun treat and a recommendation if you are in South Florida.

Our next leg took us down Krome Avenue along the Everglades and merged us onto the bridge to Key Largo and our first stop, Keys Palms RV Resort. They have a first class RV park with top notch facilities. The pool was warm and full of folks, and this is where we met our first new friends, vacationing there to go diving. We had a snorkel trip in the morning in the state park, but after getting to know them, they asked me to go diving with them in the afternoon. I was thrilled! I love to dive and my wife said it was cool. Our snorkel was incredible; we saw a wonderful thriving reef, many fish, and even a nurse shark. The dive was perfect; ideal conditions, experienced dive buddies, and a great dive boat. We bonded on our dive and I offered to take the kids fishing at the Palms RV pier. Not only did we catch fish, but we helped some nice folks bring their boat in and filet some fish. These things don’t happen at a hotel! Snorkeling, diving, fishing – all in one day.

The next day we were off to Key West; 100+ miles of a two-lane bridge over water. We entertained ourselves with research on the Keys and its history, learning about the Conch Republic. We saw pieces of Henry Flagler’s rail line, older bridges too scary to consider driving on, and a preserve for the Key Deer, the smallest deer in America and an endangered species. We arrived at our campground, Geiger Key Marina Fish Camp and RV Park, and found what most folks want to find in the FL Keys, an open air bar/restaurant hugging a salt-water finger of shark pass with all the authentic Key West feel you could ask for. The bonus of the 4th of July week was watching Navy F/A-18’s from Boca Chica NAS doing touch and go and other maneuvers. We had our own private air show!

The highlight of the 4th was the fireworks from the harbor cruise. What a great time with Cliff and Laurie from South Africa; sharing the 4th with visitors from another country made it special for us. On the 5th we offered the extra seat in our truck to anyone who wanted to join in our “events de tourista” in Key West and our new friend Manolo’s son decided to join us. Our events in Key West included some of the more offbeat attractions, the civil war museum at Fort East Martello, the Truman Little White House, and of course the Key West lighthouse. We found the Mile 0 marker on US 1, and the US Southernmost Point marker and took a picture, must-do’s in Key West. Back at Geiger’s, Manolo was preparing a feast for all, and it was the best Latin food you ever tasted. Myself and new friends, with cigars and drinks, talked to the wee hours, the RVing life for sure.

We met so many people at each campsite! We helped a camping neighbor with his truck and our daughter met other kids to spend time with. No one in a hotel gets to meet, understand, and share with their neighbors like they do in campgrounds, and that is why we go camping!

Smart RV Products for Smart RVers: An RV Technology Blog 3 Jul 2018, 5:34 pm

The WoBLR

Hello again, Herb Gingold here with our first installment of stories on how we created our products. Each one was born from the two most powerful forces that spur innovation, necessity and conflict. This is a story that encompasses both topics, results in a very cool product, and has a happy ending!

We first purchased HAHRV (Home away from home RV, the name we gave our camper). We bought HAHRV for the most common RV need, tailgating. We love college football, our team UCF (GO Knights, Charge ON!), and our tailgate crew of more than 20 years. I remember telling Vicky we got RV lot passes. She reminded me that we did not have an RV, so we got HAHRV just a few days later! That started our adventures in camping, and we have been camping ever since.

Now on to the topic of this story, LEVELING. If you have an auto level system and never had to manually level a camper with blocks and hand crank jacks, this story may not have the same impact, but for those who have had the pleasure, this tale should be déjà vu for you.

After watching some YouTube videos on leveling and inspecting my gently used RV, I found the plastic bubble levels attached with foam tape. As an engineer, I was disgusted that someone wasted their time, money, and effort on these. They are not effective. A quick check online for something better to measure level produced the usual suspects, such as a bigger single direction bubble level that I screw in, of which I had little interest. Running from one level to the next to try to get them both centered was so 19th century, and I wanted better. I found some basic electronic level devices: Some showed one direction, some both, but they all had the same problem; they were little more than a green/red LED level, just as ineffective as the bubbles and you could not even tell how close you were to green until it was too late. Only one device had a remote display, so I bought it from a local retail store. When I got it home I sighed in frustration: It looked like something right out of a 1980’s catalog and performed even worse. I took it back that same day. AAARGGH, I was speechless in frustration.

Vicky suggested she would take out her smartphone and open the free two-dimensional bubble level app and place it on the floor. We still faced the problem that the smartphone is inside the trailer and I had to go from jack to jack and level the unit. I needed to be able to see the display or I would have to run back and forth to get HAHRV level! Vicky volunteered to be my eyes and tell me where the bubble was and let me know when we were level. We tried to do this in our reasonably flat back yard, and things went well at first. Vicky placed her phone on the floor and looked at the display, which showed the degrees off center in Y (pitch) and X (roll), but this is where things started to fall apart. There is nothing in a trailer that is level to any other spot in the trailer. We could not find a spot to put the phone that would be level for the phone and trailer with any repeatability. We also still had the problem of two-person leveling or running back and forth. The phone app solution was on the right track but did not get it done. It needed the ability to be able to be calibrated to what level feels like for you.

Vicky said, “Why don’t you take the sensor out of the phone and make it send the signals back to the phone, then it can stay in the same place, then you can do it by yourself.” Of course! She’s right! I can do that, so I created our WoBLR level, “The World’s Best Level for RVs.” I made the level device and wrote a simple app. It was not pretty, but it worked. On our next camping trip while Vicky and our daughter, Alee, walked our dog, I was able to level HAHRV in minutes, by myself, and with good accuracy. Nothing I had seen to that point for an RV level could touch what I had made, and so we named it “The World’s Best Level for RVs,” The WoBLR.

My next few trips cemented my love for the WoBLR and helped me develop most of the current functionality. On our next camping trips I would travel ahead and set HAHRV up.  When Vicky and Alee arrived it was ready, fire going, ahhhh! The ability to level HAHRV by myself, with pinpoint accuracy and repeatability, saved me lots of time. Each time someone would see me using the WoBLR and asked where we got it, they would suggest we sell them.

The WoBLR will save you time and frustration leveling your RV, and it does even more with ARCLENGTHCALC offset algorithm and Hitch Point to help you reconnect with ease.

Welcome to the new age in RVing 25 Jun 2018, 7:00 pm

Welcome to the new age in RVing, Technology for everyone!

Years ago I was a sales engineer for a technology company in Florida. I traveled the entire state (Florida is bigger than most think), and if you know Florida and the south you know getting to your destination can be a challenge. At that time GPS navigation was making its first appearance in high end cars. I knew that type of product would make my life easier. I could not afford the class of car that came with Navigation (not to mention it was a very expensive upgrade). A company by the name of Garmin came along and offered an aftermarket GPS/Nav at a very reasonable $500. The value it brought me in getting to my customers and back home quickly and conveniently was well worth the cost, and I did not have to get the very expensive car.

When I first started camping, I ran into the same problem. I would encounter a challenge and see that the solution existed but only on very expensive RVs, but it was cost prohibitive on my modest bumper pull. The tools I did find available were typically not up to the task or my expectations, but they also were time wasting and inefficient, sometimes even dangerous.

We created our products to provide the average RVer with the convenience and features found on high-end RVs today. They are on those rigs because they are valuable in the RV experience, but the cost of those RVs are out of most folks’ price range, and the RV aftermarket has left us with few affordable options for advanced features. Our products are the “Garmins” of their function. We give you the conveniences and make it affordable.

In future blogs I will tell you the problems I have run into and how I solved them or improved the process to enhance our RV experience. Hopefully the stories will resonate with you. Some are funny, some were stressful, but the result has been Vicky and I have embarked on the greatest adventure we could have imagined, starting RV Intelligence to sell our RV inventions!

The products we created are truly from our camping experiences. I had to enhance my camping experience by innovating. Our WoBLR and JAS remote controls are perfect examples. So, what would make your life easier when you’re traveling in your RV? We would love to hear from you! We’re continually developing more Smart RV products. Keep an eye on RV Intelligence to see what is coming next.

In future Blog installments I will show you other benefits of our current technology and discuss our upcoming products and solicit your feedback.
