Revised Model 410 Flame Photometer Range 28 Sep 2022, 11:25 am
Changes to M410 Flame Photometer Instruments/Range
Description | Part Number | New Part number | New Description |
M410 Classic – | 47541200 | 41000009 | M410 Classic Flame Photometer |
M410 Industrial (with Interface) | 47541201 | 41000209 | M410 Industrial Flame Photometer |
M410C (with Interface) | 47541301 | 41000309 | M410 Scientific Flame Photometer |
The Model 410 was originally developed by Corning – some 35 plus years ago. It has earned an enviable reputation amongst those performing Flame Photometry – so much so it has been studied closely by several competitors looking for a quick route to the market for their “untried” products.
Whilst Sherwood had no real desire to change this industry standard, we reached the point where we had to undertake some substantial developments to enable us to continue to supply the M410.
The Main PCB had to be modernised as many of the original design components have become more difficult to source. That in turn led to our designing out the on-board transformer and to powering the new design via a universal switch mode power supply. We have also taken the opportunity to improve the accuracy of the linearisation facility and extended the linear range for those determining Sodium in units of mg/l (ppm).
The Model 410 Range will now consist of the Classic, Industrial and Scientific.
The M410 Classic is still supplied as standard with element specific filters for Na, K and Ca and 1000ppm (mg/l) Calibrators.
The New M410 Classic (41000009) differs from the original M410 Classic (47541200) as follows:
Powered via an external switch mode DC power supply supplied with universal plug adapters.
An additional front panel LED indicates an air supply is connected and at the required pressure
The Analogue output is now via a BNC connector.
The rear panel also now hosts: a 9 Pin D Serial port, USB A and USB B.
(Note: The New M410 Classic has No printer connectivity)
The M410 Classic’s firmware may be updated using a USB stick plugged into the USB A socket
The M410 Industrial is still supplied as standard with element specific filters for Na, K and Ca, 1000ppm (mg/l) Calibrators, digital interface, and Sodium linearisation function
The New M410 Industrial (41000209) differs from the M410 Industrial (47541201) as follows:
it is powered via an external switch mode DC power supply supplied with universal plug adapters. An additional front panel LED indicates an air supply is connected and at the required pressure. With the linearisation function switched on and the Sodium filter selected a Blue LED is illuminated
Na Linearisation is extended to 50 ppm (mg/l). Analogue output is now via a BNC connector.
Serial Printer output is now via a rear panel mounted conventional 9 pin D socket. A USB B socket allows connection to a PC for communication with an external laptop or desktop computer via a type A-B cable. This port can only be used as a virtual asynchronous serial link. Under the Windows operating system, serial ports are referred to as COM ports, e.g., COM4. This connection can be used by the BlueNotes application package to collect data and display results. The rear panel also hosts a USB A socket The M410 Industrial’s firmware may be updated using a USB stick plugged into the USB A socket
The New M410 Scientific replaces the 410 Clinical as we move away from use of the “Clinical” descriptor and all the implications that has in the Medical Device sector
The M410 Scientific is supplied as standard with element specific filters for Na, K and Li and a mixed mmol/l calibrator solution, digital interface, and Sodium linearisation function
The New M410 Scientific (41000309) differs from the original M410 Clinical (47541301) as follows:
it is powered via an external switch mode DC power supply supplied with universal plug adapters. An additional front panel LED indicates an air supply is connected and at the required pressure. With the linearisation function switched on and the Sodium filter selected a Green LED is illuminated
Na Linearisation is to 200 mmol/l (assumes presentation after dilution 1 part in 200).
The rear panel also hosts a USB A socket The M410 Scientific’s firmware may be updated using a USB stick plugged into the USB A socket

Sherwood re-invents the Weir 18 Oct 2019, 11:25 am
for improved precision of results in
Flame Photometer—Dilutor systems.
Sherwood Scientific’s Model 805 continuous flow Dilutor is used in laboratories to give consistent
sample dilution prior to sample aspiration into one of the company’s range of Flame Photometers.
Used together with one of Sherwood’s dual channel instruments, the Models 420, 425 or 420Cs; the
Dilutor can also add in the internal reference (Lithium or Caesium) to enable enhanced precision.
Once diluted, the sample/reference mix is fed by the Dilutor to a Weir Cup, from which the Flame
Photometer aspirates a portion for analysis in the flame.
Two mounting options are available for the Open Weir Cup Assembly: a Mounting Boss fitted to the
sample presentation area of new build 400 series Flame Photometers and a Support Arm for
retrofits to older instruments.
The Holder Assembly, together with the Mounting Boss or Retrofit Support Arm, ensure correct
positioning and height of the Open Weir Cup. An integrated, manually adjustable, capillary ensures
sample aspiration from the optimal place; just within the meniscus of the diluted sample stream.
The Mounting Boss, 800 02 006, should only be ordered separately as a spare for a damaged one.
They are now supplied fitted to the base moulding of all new 400 series Flame Photometers; i.e.
M410, M420, M420Cs & M425. The Mounting Boss is not intended for Operators or Distributors to
install to older instruments.
The Open Weir Cup Holder Assembly, 800 15 006, will be supplied as standard with new Dilutors,
together with the Open Weir Cup Assembly, 800 09 010. With new build Dilutors, these two
components will be supplied already combined as one assembly: Holder Assembly, Weir (Open)
Inc., Weir Cup, 800 15 000.
Customers who order a new Dilutor to run with an old Flame Photometer* i.e. without a Mounting
Boss, will need to order a Support Arm (Upper), 800 15 002. The Support Arm (Upper) is fitted to
the Flame Photometer, then the Holder Assembly, Weir (Open) Inc., Weir Cup, 800 15 000,
supplied with the dilutor is fixed to the Support Arm (Upper).
To upgrade to the new Open Weir Cup, customers with an older Flame Photometer* and Dilutor,
need to order the Holder Assembly Retrofit Weir Cup (open) 800 15 001 which includes 800 15 000
and 800 15 002.
*Older Flame Photometers with the small plastic Constant Head & Drain; SN#20586 – #28015, will
require the Constant Head & Drain, Large – Replacement Kit 410 11 001.
Part Number 800 15 007 provides that kit 410 11 001 together with Holder Assembly Retrofit Weir
Cup (Open) 800 15 001.
