Providing Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Service to the City of Stamford, CTRetired Deputy Chief Kevin Tappe Has Passed Away 11 Apr 2025, 5:04 pm
It is with deep regret that the Stamford Fire Department announces the passing of retired Deputy Chief Kevin B Tappe. Kevin, a longtime Stamford and Ridgefield resident, died recently in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was 72.
Kevin Bedard Tappe was born to John and Rhodyne Tappe in Long Beach, California. He attended St. Anthony Claret in Anaheim, California, and Stamford Catholic High in Stamford, Connecticut. He studied at UConn Storrs and Clemson University, completing his bachelor’s degree in fire science from Charter Oak State College. Tappe earned his MBA in public administration from Columbia Southern University, graduated from the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, and received multiple certifications from the Connecticut Fire Academy.
Tappe pursued interests in softball, fishing, bow and gun shooting sports, and flying. He coached softball with his daughters for over 10 years and, as a recreational pilot, traversed the country in his Piper Cherokee. A natural “disruptor” who loved a good-natured prank, he once joined the Stamford Veterans Day parade with an unplanned low flyover up Bedford Street.
But his lifelong passion was firefighting, his interest sparked as a 14-year-old volunteer firefighter with the Belltown Fire Department, where Tappe became one of its first paid employees. With the Stamford Fire Department, he rose through the ranks, was honored as Firefighter of the Year, and retired as Deputy Chief of Training. He also served as a volunteer and president of the Stamford Emergency Medical Service. He continued his career with the Ridgefield Fire Department, retiring as Chief. His passion for all things fire spanned 60 years, including 30 with the Connecticut Fire Academy, where Tappe trained generations of firefighters, officers, and EMTs specializing in Fire I and II, fire officer, fire instructor, and incident safety officer programs. His teaching reflected his deep concern about the safety and skills of his student firefighters.
He is survived by his wife Karen Tappe of Knoxville; Sharon Tappe and his daughters Kathleen Thomas and Michelle Woodberry, all of Stamford; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers Stephen Tappe of Westcliffe, Colorado, and Joseph Tappe of Chiang Mai, Thailand; and sister Anne Daniells of San Diego, California.
A wake is scheduled for Friday, April 25, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and a 12:00 p.m. funeral Mass will be held on April 26 at St. Leo’s Parish, both in Stamford. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Fire Destroys Auto Body Shop in Shippan Area 14 Feb 2025, 7:04 am
At 8:55 pm on Thursday 2/13/25 the Stamford 911 Center recieved a call reporting heavy smoke in the area of 87 Wardwell St. in the Shippan area of Stamford. SFD Engine 4 arrived approximately 3 minutes later and found heavy smoke that seemed to be originating from a block north. Other responding units from Central Fire Headquarters diverted to Halloween Blvd and found an auto body shop with heavy smoke pushing out from the roofline and fire visible through the windows on the corner of Halloween Blvd and St. Mary's Street. As a structure fire was declared, first arriving fire crews had to cut through fencing surrounding the building in order to gain access to the property and then had to cut through metal garage doors to get into the building to begin firefighting efforts. As crews advanced into the heavily congested body shop and began extinguishment efforts the well developed fire began to burn through the roof and a 2nd alarm was struck bringing additional units to the scene. A portion of the roof began to collapse and the Incident Commander ordered all crews to withdraw from the building and the firefighting strategy transitioned to a defensive attack mode. Two tower ladder master streams and three portable master streams were used to contain and eventually extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control after approximately 2 hours with final extinguishment taking about 1 more hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal's office and the State of Connecticut Fire Marshal's office and fire crews are remaining on the scene overnight to assist the fire marshals and to ensure that there are no reignitions of fire particularly in the areas where the roof collapsed. The 2 Alarm SFD response included 6 Engine Companies, 2 Tower Ladder Companies, 1 Rescue Company, 2 Command units and 2 Safety Officers as well as Staff Chief's, Fire Marshal's, and the SFD Mechanical Division for a total of approximately 50 firefighters at the scene. 2 Stamford EMS medic units and a SEMS supervisor were also on scene to support the SFD as were members of the Stamford Police Department. No civilian or fire department injuries were reported. Members of the Stamford volunteer fire departments provided coverage of their own districts as well as the downtown SFD district during the fire.
