What is Breast Reduction Surgery Like? 20 Mar 2025, 5:20 pm
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure designed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size that is more proportionate to the body. Many individuals opt for this surgery to relieve discomfort associated with overly large breasts, such as back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, and skin irritation. Additionally, some patients pursue this procedure to improve their ability to participate in physical activities or to find better-fitting clothing.
The Consultation Process
Before undergoing breast reduction surgery, patients meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon for an initial consultation. During this appointment, the surgeon evaluates breast size, discusses medical history, and listens to the patient’s concerns and desired outcomes. The surgeon may also take photographs and measurements to plan the procedure. Patients should be prepared to discuss their medical history, current medications, and any previous surgeries.
Additionally, the surgeon may explain the potential impact of the procedure on breastfeeding, sensation changes, and scarring. They will also provide details about preoperative instructions, such as avoiding smoking and certain medications that can increase bleeding risk.
The Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about 2 to 4 hours. The most common techniques involve:
- Anchor or Inverted-T Incision: This method includes an incision around the areola, extending downward and horizontally along the breast crease. It is commonly used for significant reductions.
- Vertical or Lollipop Incision: A circular incision around the areola with a vertical line down to the breast crease, suitable for moderate reductions.
- Liposuction: Used when only minor tissue removal is needed, liposuction can contour the breast without significant scarring.
During the procedure, excess tissue is removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped to create a more lifted and proportional appearance. The nipple and areola may also be repositioned to align with the new breast shape. The surgeon may use dissolvable sutures and surgical drains to aid in the healing process.
Recovery and Aftercare
After surgery, patients are monitored in a recovery area before being sent home the same day or after a short hospital stay. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common in the first few weeks. Pain medication and compression garments help support healing and minimize swelling.
Patients are typically advised to sleep on their backs and avoid sleeping on their stomachs to prevent unnecessary pressure on the breasts. Most individuals can return to light activities within a week, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. Full results become apparent as swelling subsides over the next few months.
To optimize healing, it is important to attend all follow-up appointments and follow the surgeon’s post-operative care instructions. These may include wound care, drain removal (if applicable), and scar management techniques such as silicone gel or massage.
Benefits and Risks
Breast reduction surgery offers numerous benefits, including pain relief, improved posture, enhanced body proportions, and increased confidence. Many patients report an improved quality of life, with fewer physical limitations and less discomfort from their breasts.
However, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks. Potential complications include:
- Scarring: While scars are permanent, they often fade over time and can be minimized with proper care.
- Changes in Sensation: Some patients may experience temporary or permanent numbness in the nipples and surrounding areas.
- Difficulty Breastfeeding: Some women may have reduced ability to breastfeed after surgery.
- Asymmetry: While surgeons aim for symmetry, minor differences in breast size or shape may occur post-surgery.
- Infection or Poor Healing: Proper wound care is essential to reduce the risk of infection and delayed healing.
Long-Term Outcomes and Lifestyle Impact
Many individuals find that breast reduction surgery positively impacts their daily lives. Activities such as running, yoga, and other exercises become more accessible and comfortable. Patients also report finding it easier to shop for clothing that fits well, improving their confidence and wardrobe choices.
Although results are generally long-lasting, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging can alter breast shape over time. Maintaining a stable weight and following a healthy lifestyle can help prolong the benefits of the surgery.
Is Breast Reduction Surgery Right for You?
If you experience physical discomfort, difficulty finding well-fitting clothing, or self-consciousness due to large breasts, breast reduction surgery may be a life-changing option. Consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon is the first step in determining if this procedure aligns with your needs and goals.
Breast reduction surgery has helped countless individuals feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies. If you are considering this procedure, thorough research and consultation with a professional can help you make an informed decision. Be sure to ask your surgeon any questions you may have and weigh the potential benefits and risks before proceeding.
In the end, the decision to undergo breast reduction surgery is highly personal. Understanding what to expect before, during, and after the procedure can help ensure a smooth and successful experience.

Does Size Matter? The Truth About Breast Reduction Surgery 5 Mar 2025, 7:06 pm
When it comes to our bodies, size is often a topic of discussion—especially for women considering breast reduction surgery. While society frequently focuses on the desire for larger breasts, the reality is that bigger isn’t always better. For many women, overly large breasts can lead to chronic pain, discomfort, and even emotional distress. So, does size really matter?
The Burden of Large Breasts
Having disproportionately large breasts isn’t just a cosmetic concern— it can be a medical issue. Many women experience:
- Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain due to the excess weight.
- Skin irritation and rashes in the folds under the breasts.
- Grooves in the shoulders from bra straps digging into the skin.
- Limited physical activity, making exercise and even daily tasks uncomfortable.
- Emotional distress, including self-consciousness or unwanted attention.
For these reasons, among others, breast reduction surgery isn’t about vanity — it’s about improving quality of life.
Finding the Right Size for You
Breast reduction isn’t a one-size-fits-all procedure. During a consultation, your surgeon will consider factors like body proportions, lifestyle, and personal goals to determine a size that is both aesthetically pleasing and physically comfortable. The goal is to achieve balance—reducing volume while maintaining a natural shape that complements your body.
The Benefits of Going Smaller
Many women report life-changing improvements after breast reduction surgery, including: Reduced pain and discomfort
Better posture
Increased ability to exercise
More clothing options
Improved confidence and self-image
Does Size Matter? Absolutely — But Comfort Matters More
At the end of the day, the right size is the one that makes you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin. If large breasts are causing you physical or emotional distress, a breast reduction could be a solution worth considering.
Thinking about breast reduction? Consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Steven Wallach, to discuss your options and find the best size for you. Because when it comes to your well-being, comfort matters most.

The Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery 25 Feb 2025, 2:57 pm
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a medical procedure designed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size more proportionate to the body. Many women, and even some men with gynecomastia, opt for this surgery to alleviate physical discomfort and improve their overall quality of life. Here are some key benefits of breast reduction surgery:
1. Relief From Chronic Pain
One of the most significant benefits of breast reduction is relief from chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain. Large breasts can create excessive strain on the upper body, leading to poor posture and persistent discomfort. By reducing breast size, patients often experience immediate and long-term pain relief.
2. Improved Mobility and Physical Activity
Women with excessively large breasts may find it challenging to engage in physical activities such as running, yoga, or even simple exercises. A breast reduction can make it easier to participate in fitness routines without discomfort, encouraging a more active and healthier lifestyle.
3. Enhanced Posture
Heavy breasts often lead to slouching and poor spinal alignment. Over time, this can result in severe posture-related problems. By reducing the weight on the chest, breast reduction surgery helps improve posture and reduces the risk of spinal complications.
4. Better Clothing Fit and Style Choices
Many women with large breasts struggle to find clothing that fits well, especially when it comes to bras, swimsuits, and fitted tops. After a breast reduction, patients often find it easier to shop for clothes that complement their body shape without the limitations imposed by overly large breasts.
5. Boost in Self-Confidence and Mental Well-Being
For many individuals, having disproportionately large breasts can lead to self-consciousness, social anxiety, or unwanted attention. Breast reduction surgery can provide a significant boost in confidence, allowing patients to feel more comfortable in their own skin and enjoy a more positive self-image.
6. Reduction in Skin Irritation and Rashes
Excess breast tissue can cause chafing, skin irritation, and rashes under the breast fold, particularly in hot and humid climates. Reducing the size of the breasts helps minimize these issues, leading to better overall skin health.
7. Correction of Asymmetry
It is common for women to have one breast larger than the other. Breast reduction surgery can help create a more balanced and symmetrical appearance, improving body proportions and aesthetics.
8. Long-Term Results and Improved Quality of Life
Unlike temporary solutions such as pain medication or specialized bras, breast reduction surgery offers a permanent solution to the challenges of overly large breasts. Most patients report a dramatic improvement in their daily lives, from better sleep to increased energy levels and overall well-being.
Conclusion
Breast reduction surgery is a life-changing procedure that provides both physical and emotional benefits. Whether you’re seeking relief from chronic pain, improved mobility, or enhanced confidence, this surgery can be a transformative solution. If you are considering a breast reduction, consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss your options and determine if it is the right choice for you.

Renew Your Comfort and Confidence with Breast Reduction in New York City 20 Feb 2025, 7:52 pm
Spring in New York City is not just a time for outdoor activities and fresh starts; it’s the perfect season to prioritize personal wellness and aesthetic goals. What better way to prioritize yourself than alleviating the chronic pain and discomfort that can come with overly large breasts?
If you are considering a breast reduction (or reduction mammoplasty), now is the ideal time to explore the transformative benefits of this procedure.
Why Consider Breast Reduction?
Many women struggle with physical discomfort caused by very large breasts, including back, shoulder, and neck pain. With breast reduction surgery, you can address that pain and help alleviate skin irritation, indentations from bra straps, and feelings of self-consciousness.
A breast reduction is a cosmetic surgery that can effectively alleviate these issues, balance your proportions, and improve your quality of life by removing excess breast tissue and glandular tissue, reducing your breast size, and recontouring your breast shape.
Breast reduction surgery can also be combined with other breast cosmetic surgery, including breast lift and breast reconstruction. It can also be combined with body contouring surgeries like a tummy tuck, liposuction, and more.
Who is a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?
If you’re struggling with overly large breasts and are over the age of 18, you are likely an ideal candidate for a breast reduction. We recommend being older than 18 in case your breasts continue to grow after surgery, which may result in needing a secondary reduction. We also recommend you be in good overall health, not have a previous breast surgery, be a nonsmoker, and have realistic expectations of the surgery.
Welcome Spring with Renewed Comfort with Breast Reduction Surgery
The spring season encourages change and renewal. Undergoing plastic surgery like a breast reduction in the spring means you’ll be back on your feet, enjoying the vibrant city life by the summer. With the new policy in place for the state of New York, Dr. Wallach and his team will confer with the insurance company themselves on your behalf.
What is the Recovery Process Like?
Patients typically return to most daily activities within 2 weeks. Full recovery can take a few months, with complete adherence to Dr. Wallach’s post-operative plan ensuring optimal results.
To start the healing process, you’ll want to rest as much as possible, avoid alcohol and smoking, and stay away from strenuous activities until Dr. Wallach approves you to start exercising again. You’ll also need to wear a surgical bra to help ease swelling and promote better healing.
Are There Any Risks Involved?
As with any surgery, there are risks with a breast reduction, but complications are rare. Dr. Wallach will discuss all potential risks and benefits during your consultation. What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery designed to reshape the nose, making it more balanced with your other facial features. Whether you want to enhance your appearance or improve your breathing, rhinoplasty can be customized to fit your needs.
Benefits of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can boost your confidence by enhancing your overall appearance. It can also help you breathe more easily if structural issues are causing problems. Many patients feel more comfortable after surgery, making it a life-changing procedure.
Why Winter is Ideal for Rhinoplasty
Winter is ideal for rhinoplasty because the cooler weather helps with healing. Scarves and coats make it easy to hide swelling or bandages, giving you privacy as you recover. The season also encourages staying indoors, allowing you to rest and heal without missing out on outdoor activities. By spring, you will be ready to show off your refreshed look.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Dr. Wallach offers two main types of rhinoplasty, closed and open. Closed rhinoplasty uses small incisions inside the nose, leaving no visible scars, while open rhinoplasty involves a small incision under the nose for more precise surgery. Dr. Wallach will recommend the best approach for your goals and ensure you are comfortable every step of the way.
Recovering from Rhinoplasty
After your rhinoplasty, you can expect some swelling and bruising, which will improve over the first few weeks. - Is winter recovery truly easier? Yes, the lack of intense sun exposure during winter minimizes the risk of pigmentation changes and swelling, aiding faster recovery.
- How soon will I see the results? Results can vary; however, many patients notice improvements within a few days, with full effects visible in a couple of weeks, particularly with injectables like Botox and fillers. The results of a facelift will take weeks and months to be fully visible.

This plastic surgery procedure, provided by an acclaimed plastic surgeon like Dr. Steven Wallach MD, FACS, can enhance your natural contours, boost your self-esteem, and redefine how you feel about yourself this summer.
What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also known as mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure to increase breast size and improve shape. Using either breast implants or fat transfer, the surgery is designed to provide a fuller, more symmetrical appearance. This can be a game-changer for anyone unhappy with their breasts, making it a prevalent option in cosmetic surgery in places like The Upper East Side, New York City.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes one to two hours. The incision is in one of several possible locations: along the crease under the breast (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). This incision creates a pocket either beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular) or directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular).
The procedure concludes with applying dressings and a supportive bra to aid healing. Post-operative care instructions are provided to manage discomfort and minimize the risk of complications during recovery.

The best time for breast augmentation is when you are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and can take the necessary time off for recovery.
Many people choose to schedule their procedure when they can take advantage of extended downtime, such as during a long holiday break or a less busy season at work. Additionally, it’s essential to consider personal life events; avoiding times when significant changes or stressors are occurring can help ensure a smoother recovery. Are You Put To Sleep For Liposuction? 28 Feb 2024, 8:41 pm
Liposuction is an outpatient surgery typically carried out in a doctor’s office. What does it do? Liposuction removes excess fat from targeted areas of the body, including the stomach, buttocks, thighs, back, and chin, among other areas. It all depends on the area you’re looking to address.
Because of its surgical nature, many people wonder if they must be put to sleep for liposuction.
Are Patients Put to Sleep for Liposuction?
The answer is it depends. Some patients prefer one type of anesthesia over the other. It can also depend on how intensive the procedure is. But you do not have to be put under general anesthesia for liposuction procedures. Doctors can perform liposuction under local anesthesia while patients are awake. Most of the time, patients are given a mild sedative to help them relax during liposuction treatments.
Either have the procedure under general or local anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home afterward.
You will need time to recover after liposuction before returning to your routine. You can feel pretty sore for the first few days after the procedure. Most people can return to work after two to three days, depending on the treatment areas. In fact, many can go back to physical activity like the gym within 1-2 weeks. Most of the swelling from liposuction will take six to eight weeks to subside.
Liposuction Treatment Areas
Liposuction can target many areas of the body, especially those that have not responded well to diet and exercise. Each patient will go through a consultation appointment to learn about the options and determine their treatment locations.
Some of the areas that can be treated with liposuction include:
- Love handles
- Arms
- Bra rolls
- Abdomen
- Thighs(Inner and Outer)
- Chest
- Chin and Neck
Dr. Wallach will discuss your problem areas and determine which will respond best to liposuction treatments.
Types of Liposuction Procedures
You have more than one option for liposuction treatments. At Steven Wallach, MD we offer a variety of liposuction options.
Traditional Liposuction
Traditional liposuction uses a cannula to loosen stubborn unwanted fat and then uses a vacuum to suction it out, leaving you with a more contoured appearance.
VASER Liposuction
VASER stands for vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance. The sound energy waves break down fat cells, making the fat easier to remove. This procedure can be done under local anesthesia
Power-Assisted Liposuction
This form of liposuction uses a traditional cannula, but it is power-assisted and moves on its own, making breaking up fat more effective. This procedure is commonly performed under local anesthesia.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction
Laser-assisted liposuction (also called SmartLipo) relies on a laser to heat up and emulsify the fat and make it easier to remove. It also tightens and tones the skin for a more sculpted appearance.
Schedule a Consultation
You do not need to worry about being put to sleep for liposuction. Although these procedures are surgical, they are less invasive than traditional cosmetic surgeries, so we only need to use a local anesthetic. If you have tried dieting and exercising and your fat is not responding in some areas, liposuction may be your answer. Call the office today or use our online contact form to schedule a consultation appointment to get started. Dr. Wallach will happily consult with you and discuss your liposuction options.
